Okay, so I just saw Eternity, the new A24 film, and honestly, it’s exactly what I needed! It’s a proper rom-com, the kind Hollywood doesn’t really seem to be making much of anymore – the director actually has some thoughts on why! But he totally nailed it. It stars Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, and the story is wild: Olsen’s character dies and has to pick which of her two husbands she wants to spend forever with. It’s already getting amazing reviews – it’s ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91% audience score – and honestly, it’s just a really comforting watch, especially around the holidays.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, the cast was asked about movies that hold special meaning for them and connect them to loved ones. While many might expect answers about epic, timeless films, Elizabeth Olsen surprised everyone with her choices. She immediately named two movies: Mom and Dad Save the World and Clifford – a pair you likely wouldn’t predict!
You know, my husband and I actually connected over these two pretty obscure movies. They were big parts of both our childhoods, which is funny because most people don’t seem to like them at all! Take Clifford, for example – it only has a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is hilarious.
Interestingly, despite initially receiving terrible reviews, the 1994 comedy Clifford, starring Martin Short and Charles Grodin, has gained a dedicated following and currently holds a 20% approval rating. Film critic Roger Ebert famously described it as uniquely bad. Another film, Mom and Dad Save the World, hasn’t been so lucky, with a much lower 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Her co-stars answers, while good, aren’t quite as surprising as Olsen’s two picks.
Teller admitted it wasn’t a movie, calling it a bit of a shortcut. He explained that watching Saturday Night Live felt like a family tradition, similar to Christmas. Growing up, his family would watch compilation DVDs of performers like Chris Farley, and that always signaled the start of the holiday season for him.
I love watching movies with my mom,” said Turned. “We saw The Gentlemen recently – that Guy Ritchie film. We enjoy movies like that, things that are funny, like Bridesmaids and The Goonies. They’re all pretty similar in that way – they just make you laugh.
Eternity is now playing in theaters.
