Ethereum Foundation Drama: Will Joe Lubin Save the Day? 🤔

In a rather theatrical turn of events, Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin has thrown his hat into the ring, advocating for a complete overhaul of the Ethereum Foundation. It appears that Consensys, his for-profit enterprise, is ready to don its superhero cape and take a more prominent role in this blockchain melodrama.

In a candid tête-à-tête with CryptoMoon, Lubin confessed that his company had been playing the wallflower, shying away from accusations of undue influence. Yet, recent developments have revealed that “people still kind of rely on us to market Ethereum and to be the major champions for Ethereum.” Who knew? 🎭

“So, that surprised me, but also excited me, because we’re ready to get louder about that and, again, compete vigorously.”

The Ethereum community, bless their hearts, has been embroiled in a veritable soap opera of infighting lately. The slow progress of the scaling roadmap and Ether’s (ETH) dismal price have led to a chorus of discontent, with fingers pointed at the Ethereum Foundation’s perceived lack of leadership. The executive director, Aya Miyaguchi, has found herself in the crosshairs, with calls for her ousting in favor of Ethereum researcher Danny Ryan. Oh, the drama! 🎬

Vitalik Buterin, the grand architect of Ethereum, recently hinted at impending leadership changes while simultaneously chastising trolls in a bombshell post. He revealed that, after a decade of steering the ship, he remains the sole captain of the Ethereum Foundation. Attacks on Miyaguchi, he declared, only make him more resolute. Talk about a plot twist!

Notable Ethereum enthusiasts, including EthHub founder Eric Conner and the enigmatic Antiprosynthesis, have even ditched their .eth handles in protest. However, Antiprosynthesis, ever the fickle character, reinstated theirs shortly thereafter. The suspense is palpable! 😱

“It’s getting heated because we all care,” said Lubin, with a hint of exasperation.

“But I think the community is identifying and screaming about something that could be considered a problem or just a signal for a shift. So, I do think that we need a shift to a different kind of mode for the Ethereum ecosystem and the Ethereum Foundation.”

Lubin opined that the Foundation’s low-key approach was suitable during the SEC’s crypto crusade, but with a new administration in place, it’s time to crank up the energy. “With a massive go signal, I do think that there’s going to be so much aggressive pursuit of whatever — just trying things out, taking risks, moving really fast,” he declared, channeling his inner motivational speaker. 🚀

Buterin calls on Consensys to step up

Consensys, birthed in 2014 as a for-profit entity to build Ethereum’s infrastructure, has long been at odds with the idealistic ethos of the Foundation. Emmanuel Awosika of the 2077 Collective noted the tension, stating, “Ethereum people have always talked about ‘capture,’ and any kind of company trying to steer the protocol some way was always frowned upon.”

But on January 21, Buterin suggested that perhaps the organization in need of reform isn’t the EF, but rather @Consensys. A shocking revelation, indeed!

Lubin, ever the eager beaver, expressed his willingness to assist. “I’m happy to hear that. So, for a bunch of years, we got a lot of heat for being a prominent actor in the Ethereum ecosystem,” he said, as if he were discussing a particularly spicy gossip column.

“We’re excited to move into a phase where we don’t have to hang back, where we can compete vigorously with everybody else.” He added that Ethereum must forge connections with companies and nation-states, suggesting the Foundation could outsource some of that to the business-savvy Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. A clever maneuver! 🕵️‍♂️

Community reservations about EF’s direction
