And so, the wheels of fate have turned once more, leaving in their wake a trail of bewildered users and drained wallets. The Ethereum layer-2 (L2) platform Abstract is currently investigating a wallet drain issue, a development that has left many scratching their heads and wondering what could have been done to prevent it.

It appears that some users have fallen victim to a compromised account, a situation that has been exacerbated by the recent deployment of one million Abstract Global Wallets (AGW) by the Abstract Chain team. The issue, however, is not a global AGW issue, but rather a isolated problem tied to the Abstract-based game Cardex.

Developer 0xBeans took to X to report the issue, emphasizing that it is not a global problem, but rather a specific application that has been breached. “Seems to be Cardex, please do not interact for the time being,” he wrote, a message that has been echoed by another member of the Abstract Chain team, 0xCygaar.

One million AGW wallets deployed, and then… 🤯

The issue came the day after 0xCygaar reported that one million AGW wallets had been deployed on Feb. 17. “We’ve done more than almost anyone else in the space to bring on the next generation of smart wallets,” he said, adding: “We’re just starting.” Little did he know, the wheels of chaos were already in motion.

Following the issue, 0xCygaar reiterated that the drain is related to Cardex, urging users to revoke sessions. “This is not an issue with AGW’s contracts. There is no exploit with wallet functionality. This specific issue is related to negligence on the app regarding session key management,” he stated, adding:

“Our contracts have been audited multiple times. We had our session key module looked at specifically. These reports will be available shortly.”

This is a developing story, and further information will be added as it becomes available. In the meantime, users are advised to exercise extreme caution when interacting with their wallets.
