- Alas, the Ethereum developers have postponed the Pectra upgrade to the months of April or May, for further deliberations and tests.
- The fate of the upgrade rests upon the success of the Hoodi testnet, a veritable oracle of timing for the mainnet.
In the grand theater of Ethereum, the core developers have deemed it prudent to delay the Pectra upgrade, now scheduled for the balmy days of April or May, contingent upon the performance of the newly minted third testnet—Hoodi. Ah, the irony of naming a testnet after a garment, as if to cloak the uncertainties that lie ahead!
During a gathering of minds on the thirteenth day of March, the team resolved to unveil the Hoodi testnet on the seventeenth, a noble endeavor to scrutinize the bugs that had previously plagued the Holesky and Sepolia testnets. One of the developers, the esteemed Tim Beiko, proclaimed with a flourish,
“This (Hoodi) shall allow us to test validator exits, a feat currently impossible on Holesky, where the exit queue resembles a line for a popular concert—taking nearly a year to clear! All other Pectra functionalities, including validator consolidations, can still be tested on Holesky and Sepolia.”
What Lies Beyond the Pectra Upgrade?
For those unacquainted with the intricacies of this digital realm, there exists a perpetual queue and a capricious waiting period for validators aspiring to become block proposers in the Ethereum Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system. Presently, it takes about an hour for new validators to join the mainnet, while on Holesky, they might as well bring a sleeping bag, as it takes a year!
Thus, to circumvent the validator exit conundrum on the mainnet, the Pectra upgrade shall be scrutinized in the Hoodi testnet. The developers further elucidated,
“A mainnet fork time for Pectra shall only be determined after its successful activation on Hoodi, and when the client teams feel a sense of confidence in the state of testing. The mainnet shall be scheduled at least thirty days post-Hoodi fork (April 25 or later).”
In the interim, certain aspects of Pectra’s features will be tested on Holesky and Sepolia, as if they were the understudies waiting for their moment in the spotlight. Following Pectra, the next grand endeavor will be the implementation of Fusaka, aimed at scaling Layer 2 solutions. Research teams have until early April to submit their proposals for Fusaka, lest they be left behind in the dust of progress.
In February, the illustrious CTO of Paradigm, Georgios Konstantopoulos, implored the Ethereum developers to hasten the Fusaka upgrade post-Pectra, so as to compete with other blockchains like Solana. A noble quest indeed!
Vitalik Buterin, the venerable founder of Ethereum, echoed this sentiment in early March, stating with a twinkle in his eye,
“For the year 2025, we must have Fusaka on Layer 1 with PeerDAS, ideally with a target of 48/72 blobs. Let us aspire to have a Fusaka testnet with these parameters operational the very day after Pectra takes its bow.”
These upgrades collectively aspire to diminish Ethereum’s transaction costs and enhance network throughput, particularly in the face of fierce competition from Solana and other smart contract platforms. Ah, the relentless march of progress! 😂
