Euphoria Creator Defends Main Character’s Death In Divisive Series’ Finale

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Euphoria season 3.Euphoria is facing some major backlash.

HBO’s Euphoria has often faced criticism for its intense and challenging themes and characters. However, the show also became a cultural phenomenon, known for its striking fashion and makeup, and its realistic depiction of difficult issues like addiction. It also launched the careers of many young actors who have quickly become major stars.

The popular, but often controversial, HBO series Euphoria recently concluded after seven seasons, sparking debate among viewers. The show’s central character, Rue Bennett (played by Zendaya), tragically died from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl-laced pills. In a follow-up interview on HBO, the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, addressed the criticism surrounding the series finale.

It felt like a realistic conclusion. Sadly, people struggling with addiction, like the character Rue, often don’t have happy endings, and that’s what I wanted to portray. I also wanted to explore the pain of grief and the intense emotional struggles it causes.

Man, Season 3 really hit hard. That villain, Alamo – played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje – was the one who gave Rue those pills laced with fentanyl. It was devastating to see her, even after getting sober, ultimately succumb to what she was battling. The show then gave us this incredibly moving dream sequence where Rue got to reconnect with her mom, and even share a brand new scene with Fezco – which was extra heartbreaking knowing Angus Cloud passed away so young from an accidental overdose. It felt like a final, beautiful goodbye to both Rue and Fezco.

Levinson explained that the emotional reunion between Rue and Fezco was meant to honor both the actor Angus Cloud and the idea of not always getting a second chance, reinforcing why he felt it was important to end Rue’s storyline as he did. Both Levinson and HBO have also confirmed that Euphoria has concluded after three seasons and will not return for another season.

Viewers on X are discussing the Euphoria finale, and many are disappointed that musician Labrinth wasn’t involved. He was a significant part of the show, but left before season 3 and didn’t allow his music to be used in the final season. The reasons for his departure are still unknown.

Despite a strong start with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, season 3 of Euphoria is the lowest-rated season so far. The most recent season currently has a disappointing score of just 40% and is available to stream on HBO.
