Talk about the next PlayStation, the PS6, has started, and many people are predicting it could be released as early as 2027.
Honestly, I’m pretty happy with what my current console can do. It feels like each new generation is giving us less and less of an improvement for the cost, and I’m starting to think the PS6 won’t be a massive upgrade. The differences are just getting too small to really justify the expense.
That seems to be the gist of what Shuhei Yoshida thinks, at the very least.
A former PlayStation executive, after leaving the company earlier in the year, recently discussed his work consulting for independent game developers and shared his thoughts on where the gaming industry is headed in an interview on the Friends Per Second podcast.
According to Yoshida, Sony needs to innovate beyond just increasing processing power for its next PlayStation console.
He notes that graphics are now so realistic, even he struggles to tell the difference between advanced techniques like ray tracing and standard graphics unless he’s comparing them directly or looking at frame rates. Because of this, he believes PlayStation can’t continue simply increasing graphics power to deliver high-end experiences. While they might try, he thinks focusing solely on that would appeal to a limited audience.
Yoshida also suggests that PlayStation’s current leadership could offer new ideas about the platform’s future direction.
It’s great to see PlayStation being led by a new generation of leaders. With CEO Hideaki Nishino, who’s around 46, and Hermen Hulst, they represent a much younger perspective than previous leaders like Jim Ryan and the original PlayStation management team. This new leadership has the freedom to try innovative things and isn’t bound by past decisions, which is really exciting for the future of PlayStation.
When questioned about how Sony can make the PS6 a success, Yoshida didn’t share his own suggestions. Instead, he highlighted Sony’s history of consistently finding new and creative ways to enhance gaming with each new PlayStation console.
I believe the PS5 is a fantastic console, especially when it comes to the overall gaming experience. The use of the SSD was a game-changer, and I think it’s noticeably improved almost every game available for the system.
He praises Sony and Mark Cerny for consistently creating enjoyable gaming systems, pointing to the PS Portal as a great example of their work.
He admits he was initially doubtful, but using the product changed his mind. He’s hoping the developers have been working on something impressive that will pleasantly surprise everyone. He’s optimistic about the potential.
His views echo those of a previous God of War producer, who suggested that large game studios should also create smaller, less costly games to help fund their major releases.
