It’s common for big stars to appear in science fiction films multiple times. For example, George Clooney has been in movies like Solaris, Gravity, Tomorrowland, and The Midnight Sky. Matt Damon has starred in Titan A.E., The Adjustment Bureau, Elysium, Interstellar, The Martian, and several others. Scarlett Johansson’s filmography includes The Island, Lucy, Ghost in the Shell, and many more. This doesn’t even include their work in superhero films, which often have sci-fi elements. However, there’s one highly successful and well-known actor who hasn’t frequently appeared in science fiction movies.
Brad Pitt would be the answer. He’s appeared in science fiction films four times – twice in true sci-fi movies and twice in films that include sci-fi elements but aren’t purely science fiction. Let’s look at these films and rank them based on how good they are and how significant they were for his career.
4) World War Z

A sequel to World War Z is reportedly in the works, but it’s uncertain if it will continue the story from the first movie. While the 2013 film wasn’t a critical darling, it was financially successful and received generally okay reviews, so a continuation isn’t a given.
The biggest problem with World War Z is that you can clearly see how much the film was changed during reshoots. The ending feels pointless and doesn’t deliver, but even before that, the movie isn’t very engaging – it just strings together one scene of people running from zombies after another. Brad Pitt’s character, Gerry Lane, isn’t developed enough, and honestly, almost any actor could have played the role, potentially even someone less well-known and more affordable. It’s likely the sequel will move in that direction, and most viewers probably wouldn’t mind if Pitt didn’t return.

3) Ad Astra

Though Ad Astra explores grand, futuristic ideas, it’s ultimately a personal story about the complicated relationship between a father and his son.
Surprisingly, the movie is most compelling when it focuses on its human story, rather than the science fiction elements. Despite its large budget and polished look, it’s not a typical action-packed sci-fi film. It can even feel slow-paced at times, but it delivers a satisfying emotional conclusion in its final act.

2) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Even though I consider David Fincher to be one of the greatest directors working today, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button isn’t his strongest film. While it’s beautiful to look at and explores interesting ideas, it’s quite lengthy and occasionally feels overly sentimental.
I have to say, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a really ambitious film, and it truly showcases Brad Pitt’s incredible acting ability – it’s one of his best performances, in my opinion. This role earned him his second Oscar nomination overall, and his first for Best Actor! And funnily enough, his very first Oscar nomination is the movie we’re talking about next.

1) 12 Monkeys

Terry Gilliam’s films are often very thought-provoking and unconventional, which can make them challenging for some viewers. However, 12 Monkeys is more broadly appealing. Plus, it showcases Brad Pitt at his very best, in any movie he’s done.
This movie is complex, following a time-traveling prisoner trying to stop a deadly virus, and you likely won’t grasp everything in one viewing. Luckily, it’s a film that improves with repeat viewings, thanks to both its ambitious direction and Bruce Willis’s energetic performance. It’s one of the most intellectually stimulating movies of the 1990s, and it solidified Willis as a dependable sci-fi star – alongside The Fifth Element and Armageddon (which wasn’t particularly good, but benefited from his involvement).
