Chris Hemsworth is famous for playing Thor in the Marvel movies, but he’s proven himself talented in other areas too. He’s always had a knack for comedy, which he brings to the Thor role, and he’s managed to make even some less-successful comedies, like Ghostbusters and Vacation, genuinely funny. He’s also a natural fit for action-crime stories, and his latest film, Crime 101, based on Don Winslow’s excellent novella from the Broken collection, further demonstrates this skill.
Out of the four crime films Chris Hemsworth has appeared in, which one stands out as the best? Could it be Crime 101?
4) Ca$h

The movie Cash is a pretty generic crime thriller that wasn’t good enough for a proper cinema release, so it went straight to Redbox. It likely only ended up there because Chris Hemsworth was starting to become famous, as it was released between his small part in Star Trek and when he first played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The movie’s story isn’t very engaging and feels too long. Chris Hemsworth plays a character who is both over-the-top and surprisingly dull, and he doesn’t get any compelling scenes. Even a talented actor like Sean Bean couldn’t save a weak villain role.

3) Blackhat

I really appreciate Michael Mann’s style – the visuals and music are always amazing. But honestly, Blackhat just didn’t reach the heights of his classics like Thief, Manhunter, Heat, or Collateral. It wasn’t a total loss, though; I actually think it’s better than his Miami Vice movie.
If you’re not fascinated by hacking and cybercrime, you’ll likely find Blackhat slow and unengaging. The movie lacks exciting action and its confusing plot makes it hard to follow. It wasn’t a popular film, and given its poor performance in theaters and difficult marketing, it probably wasn’t worth producing, despite a few moments that feel relevant today.

2) Crime 101

Fans of Don Winslow often point to Crime 101 as one of his best. The novella—or short novel, as Winslow calls them—quickly draws you in with a gripping story and memorable characters, all within about 55 pages. While good books don’t always translate to good movies, the film adaptation of Crime 101 received surprisingly positive reviews.
The positive reviews are deserved – Burt Layton’s film builds on the original story in meaningful ways. The motivations of the four main characters become more connected, and even the storyline involving Monica Barbaro’s Maya, which some find forced, adds depth to Chris Hemsworth’s character, turning him from a minor figure into a leading man. With more Winslow adaptations planned, including The Force, fans hope this successful approach continues.
1) Bad Times at the El Royale

Drew Goddard has directed two films that both showcase Chris Hemsworth’s talents effectively. In The Cabin in the Woods, Hemsworth’s character’s death cleverly signaled a surprising turn, moving the film away from standard horror tropes. And in Bad Times at the El Royale, while he doesn’t appear until later, his entrance is impactful and memorable.
Chris Hemsworth is captivating as Billy Lee, the leader of a cult, and makes it believable why people would be drawn to him – he’s charming, mesmerizing, and even frightening when he needs to be. But Bad Times isn’t just a showcase for Hemsworth’s talent. The film beautifully captures the atmosphere of the 1960s and boasts a complex, winding plot that remains engaging throughout. It also marked a significant turning point in the careers of Cynthia Erivo, Lewis Pullman, and Cailee Spaeny, making it a noteworthy film for that reason alone.
