There’s a possibility that Firefly, the beloved sci-fi series, might return. Originally airing in 2002, the show was unfortunately cancelled by Fox after only 11 of its 14 episodes were shown – and some weren’t even aired in the correct order. Despite its short run, Firefly quickly gained a dedicated fanbase and is now considered one of the best sci-fi shows of the 21st century, as well as a famously cancelled series. The show’s popularity led to a follow-up movie, Serenity, and a series of comic books.
Something exciting may be on the horizon! Nathan Fillion has hinted at a Firefly announcement involving the show’s original cast, sparking rumors of a possible revival or reboot. We’ll find out what’s happening on March 15th at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. While the exact nature of the announcement – whether it’s a new show, podcast, game, special event, or simply a collaboration – remains a mystery, the actors who will be participating have been confirmed.
8) Nathan Fillion

It wouldn’t be complete without Nathan Fillion! He played Captain Mal Reynolds, the central figure in Firefly and Serenity, and has been key in reuniting the cast. The end of Serenity hinted at continued adventures for Mal and his crew, so his involvement feels natural – Firefly simply wouldn’t be Firefly without him. Since the show ended, Fillion has successfully starred in two popular TV series, Castle and The Rookie.
7) Gina Torres
Gina Torres, who famously played Zoë in Firefly, is also returning for the reunion. As Mal’s close friend and second-in-command on the ship Serenity, and having fought alongside him in the Unification War, she’s a natural fit. It will be interesting to see how the story addresses Zoë’s past, especially the loss of her husband, Wash, in the Serenity movie. Since Firefly ended, Torres has had prominent roles in shows like Suits, Pearson, and 9-1-1: Lone Star.
6) Morena Baccarin
As a huge Firefly fan, I’ve always wondered if Mal and Inara would ever truly get together. The show ended hinting they might, and it looks like the upcoming revival might finally give us some answers! Morena Baccarin, who played Inara, is definitely involved, which is fantastic. She’s done amazingly well since Firefly ended – you’ve probably seen her as Vanessa in the Deadpool movies, or as Jessica Brody in Homeland, where she even got an Emmy nomination! I’m really excited to see what happens with her and Mal.
5) Sean Maher
As a big fan of ‘Firefly,’ I was really hoping Simon Tam, played by Sean Maher, would finally catch a break after going into hiding with his sister, River. The movie definitely hinted at a positive outcome for them both, maybe even a pardon! Plus, it seemed like Simon and Kaylee had a real connection, and I was rooting for them to find happiness together. It’s cool to see Sean Maher’s career continued to flourish – I didn’t even realize he became the voice of Nightwing (Dick Grayson) in so many DC animated movies throughout the 2010s! That’s seven different films – a fantastic run for him.
4) Summer Glau
Throughout much of Firefly, River Tam remained an enigma, but Serenity revealed more about her and her growing powers – most notably when she defeated the Reavers. The ending suggested she was ready to become Serenity’s pilot, a development any future stories would likely continue. Since then, Summer Glau has consistently appeared in science fiction and genre television, with roles in shows like The 4400, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Arrow.
3) Jewel Staite
Jewel Staite is beloved by fans for her role as Kaylee Frye, the cheerful and essential mechanic on Firefly and Serenity. Many feel the story wouldn’t be complete without her. The ending of Serenity hinted at a positive future for Kaylee and Simon, leaving fans wondering if they’d eventually rejoin the crew or continue building a peaceful life together. Staite has also appeared in several other television series, including main roles in Family Law, The Killing, and The L.A. Complex.
2) Adam Baldwin
Jayne Cobb is the strong, impulsive mercenary aboard the Serenity. Despite his rough exterior and skill with a gun, he has a hidden sensitive side. He doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with the crew, but he’s a vital member nonetheless. Actor Adam Baldwin had a successful career before Firefly, and has since appeared in shows like Chuck, Day Break, and The Last Ship.
1) Alan Tudyk
Alan Tudyk was the last original cast member confirmed for the upcoming Firefly reunion. He’s known for playing Hoban “Wash” Washburne, the ship’s pilot, in both Firefly and the movie Serenity—though his character tragically died in the film. With a potential revival, fans are wondering how Wash might return. Tudyk has continued to act in popular shows like Resident Alien and Doom Patrol, and has lent his voice to many Disney projects, notably as K-2SO in Rogue One and Andor.
Ron Glass, the last surviving member of the main cast of Firefly, passed away in 2016 at age 71. He played the beloved Shepherd Derrial Book in both the series and the movie, and fans hope any upcoming announcement will acknowledge his important contribution.
Firefly is available to stream on Hulu.
