Mutants are now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we’re seeing more and more of them appear in recent shows and movies. Four years ago, the series Ms. Marvel surprised audiences by revealing its main character, Kamala Khan, is actually a mutant. Interestingly, even in the original comics, some mutants don’t realize they have powers until something—like a surge of energy—activates them, as seen with the X-Men character Polaris. It appears this is happening more frequently in the main MCU timeline than in the traditional X-Men stories.
Things are changing again with the introduction of Wonder Man. His character, Simon Williams, seems to be a more classic type of mutant – his powers developed during puberty without any specific triggering event. This raises an exciting question: have there been traditional mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe all along? Now, we’re looking at which existing MCU characters are either confirmed mutants, or could be established as one retroactively.
11. Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel was the first officially recognized mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially, everyone thought her powers came from a special bangle, but the show revealed that exposure to a cosmic artifact actually triggered a genetic ‘mutation.’ To really emphasize this, the final episode of Ms. Marvel cleverly used a familiar tune reminiscent of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series theme song. Interestingly, Marvel has since updated the comics to officially classify Kamala Khan as a mutant there, too.
10. Namor

In the comics, Namor the Sub-Mariner is frequently considered the very first mutant. So, it makes sense that he’s also a mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like Kamala Khan, his powers came from a genetic change triggered during his mother’s pregnancy – in his case, after she consumed a mysterious plant. This plant likely activated his mutant gene, known as the X-gene.
9. Wonder Man

Wonder Man, whose real name is Simon Williams, appears to have powers in the classic comic book style. His abilities first emerged when he was thirteen, causing an explosion that his parents covered up by claiming it was a fire. Ever since, Simon has been more than just a normal person. However, he doesn’t necessarily enjoy having superpowers, as they create problems for his acting career. A rule known as the ‘Doorman Clause’ prevents anyone with enhanced abilities from working in Hollywood.
8. El Águila

Wonder Man isn’t the first character with special abilities to appear in the MCU without a clear backstory. This trend started with the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series, which introduced El Águila, a superhero who can channel energy into his sword. While El Águila is a mutant in the comics, it’s probable the MCU will follow suit.
7. Mr. Immortal

The show She-Hulk featured Mr. Immortal, a relatively unknown character from the comics who usually identifies as a mutant. However, he’s actually something beyond that – considered the next stage of human evolution, beyond even mutants, and essentially immortal. Because his abilities stem from the same evolutionary process as the X-gene, he arguably fits the definition of a mutant, and the show itself treated him as one.
6. Scarlet Witch

In the comics, Scarlet Witch is a powerful sorceress who also happens to be a mutant – a fairly common combination of abilities. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda Maximoff gained her powers after being exposed to the Mind Stone. However, later materials suggest the Mind Stone might have just unlocked powers she already had. If this is true, then Wanda is a mutant, just like in the comics. The Disney+ series WandaVision strongly supported this idea.
5. Quicksilver

This idea is further supported by the fact that Scarlet Witch’s brother, Pietro, was also exposed to the Mind Stone. Unlike his sister, he didn’t gain magical powers – he developed super-speed, which fits the idea that the Stone simply unlocked a mutant gene already present in him. Since other versions of Quicksilver across the multiverse are mutants with the same super-speed, it seems the Marvel Cinematic Universe has quietly changed the backstory of both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to make them mutants.
4. Ghost

Ghost, first appearing in Ant-Man & the Wasp, gained her unique abilities as a child after being exposed to the Quantum Realm. This exposure caused her to become unstable, and she requires a special suit to remain connected to our reality. It’s unclear if the Quantum Realm gave her these powers, or if it simply awakened a hidden mutant gene. The possibility of a mutant gene is plausible, as others affected by the Quantum Realm have developed completely different abilities.
3. Wasp

Janet Van Dyne, like Scott Lang, gained her powers from the Quantum Realm, and she’s described it as an evolutionary process. Her abilities are quite enigmatic, most notably her power to stabilize Ghost’s unstable state with a single touch. It’s unclear if Marvel will explore the characters from the Ant-Man movies further, but hopefully, we’ll get more answers if they do.
2. Monica Rambeau

Monica Rambeau, also known as Spectrum (a name given to her by Kamala Khan in The Marvels), received her ability to control energy after being caught in the Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping field. While there isn’t a clear link between Wanda Maximoff’s powers and Monica’s new abilities, it’s possible Wanda unintentionally activated a hidden genetic mutation within Monica. This idea makes sense, considering Scarlet Witch has been shown to both activate and suppress mutant genes (X-genes) in Marvel comics.
1. Ursa Major
Olivier Richters, a bodybuilder from the Netherlands, revealed he played a mutant character named Ursa Major in the movie Black Widow. While the film didn’t showcase any special powers for his character, it’s possible Ursa Major was a mutant whose abilities hadn’t developed yet.
