Every Crossover from Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman Ranked

It feels like just recently that Superman and Spider-Man teamed up after half a century! The crossover actually happened last month with DC’s Superman/Spider-Man anthology, and similar to last year’s Batman/Deadpool team-ups, it included two parts, the second of which came out today. This Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman special is the biggest crossover yet, packed with nine stories that blend elements from both heroes’ universes. With so much content, the question is: which stories stand out as the best?

Okay, let me just say upfront: every single story in this crossover special was fantastic. Honestly, I think this might be the strongest of the four Marvel/DC team-ups we’ve gotten this year. But even with all that goodness, a reviewer’s gotta rank things, right? It was seriously tough! One minute I was completely engrossed in a classic, old-school adventure, and the next I was loving the surprisingly great chemistry between Supergirl and Ghost-Spider. It wasn’t easy putting this list together, but keep reading to see how I’d rank the stories in Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1.

9. “One of Those Days”

Jeph Loeb and Jim Cheung conclude the special with a touching two-page story featuring Spider-Man and Superman. It’s a quiet conversation about dealing with loss – not filled with action, but deeply personal and clearly heartfelt from writer Jeph Loeb. The story is effective and well-done, though a little more length would have allowed the creative team to truly explore its potential.

8. “Ghosting”

Louise Simonson, who originally created the character Steel, is back writing his adventures, teaming up with artist Todd Nauck. The story kicks off with the Hobgoblin stealing cutting-edge tech from Steelworks, and Steel is determined to retrieve it. It’s a classic superhero tale filled with action and even features a surprise appearance by Thor! This story should appeal to a wide range of readers, but fans who enjoyed comics from the 1990s will especially love it.

7. “The One Thing”

Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli are reuniting to write stories about Miles Morales, and this time, he’s joining forces with Superman – a character Bendis knows well. The story kicks off with a dangerous team-up between Brainiac and Dormammu, who attack Superman. Luckily, Miles arrives to help, and the two heroes quickly discuss what it means to be a hero before battling the villains. While the story is full of action, the real draw will likely be seeing Miles and Superman team up, which fans will enjoy.

6. “The Wondrous and the Worthy”

Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman reunite to tell the story of Jane Foster as Thor, teaming her up with Wonder Woman in an exciting crossover event. The villain Darkseid has seized control of Asgard and is attacking Earth with his Parademon army. Wonder Woman and Jane connect on the battlefield, finding common ground through their shared experiences and personalities. While I enjoyed their conversation, I was hoping for a bit more action overall. It was also disappointing that we didn’t see much of Darkseid using the powerful Necrosword, All-Black.

5. “Sweethearts”

In “Sweethearts,” Joe Kelly and Humberto Ramos offer a refreshing change of pace by focusing on Gwen Stacy and Lana Lang, two important women in the lives of Spider-Man and Superman. The story centers around a conversation between them about Clark Kent and Peter Parker. It echoes the team-up in Superman/Spider-Man #1, which featured Mary Jane Watson and Lois Lane, but this one is unique because it shows these famous heroes through the eyes of people who know them only as civilians. While it may not fully satisfy the Bechdel test, it’s a well-crafted story.

4. “Remarkable”

If you’re looking for a story that passes the Bechdel test, Stephanie Phillips and Phil Noto’s Spider-Gwen and Supergirl team-up delivers. The story starts with an unlikely and somewhat reluctant meeting between the two heroes, but they quickly have to work together when Livewire attacks. Phil Noto’s artwork is fantastic, but Stephanie Phillips really shines with her portrayal of Gwen and Kara – their playful rivalry is genuinely funny and perfectly suits their personalities. This crossover was a hit, and another one would be fantastic!

3. “Metropolis Marvels”

Dan Slott’s work isn’t always for everyone, but his story with artist Marcos Martin is genuinely enjoyable. Set in 1938, it features Spider-Man Noir trying to defeat Lex Luthor, who’s posing as the Big Man, only to be stopped by the classic Golden Age Superman. Everything about it – the artwork, panel layouts, and overall atmosphere – just works perfectly. Slott and Martin did a fantastic job with this short story, and it was disappointing to see it finish.

2. “Identity War”

Geoff Johns and Gary Frank team up again for an epic crossover event, bringing the heroes and villains of Marvel and DC into direct conflict! The story kicks off when Mysterio obtains a Red Lantern power source and uses it to drastically increase the Hulk’s strength, throwing the world into utter chaos. I’ve always been a fan of Johns and Frank’s work, and this story is no exception – it’s a really enjoyable read packed with hidden references and fun nods to each character. It perfectly captures the essence of every hero, with a particularly great scene featuring Superman and the Hulk.

1. “Our Kryptonite”

As a huge comic book fan, I have to say this issue – the main one from the Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz team-up – feels a little longer than most at 28 pages, but it totally works to its advantage. Honestly, “Our Kryptonite” is the real star of this crossover event. Seeing Superman and Spider-Man get hit with everything their villains have – kryptonite for Supes and the Venom symbiote – is intense. Beyond the action, it’s cool to see them realize just how much their allies have battled. Meltzer really gets these characters, and Larraz’s artwork is phenomenal, especially when things go crazy. If you’re only going to read one part of this crossover, this is absolutely the one to pick up.
