The Justice League is DC Comics’ most iconic superhero team. While not the very first team DC ever created, they’ve become the definitive example of the company’s unique style of heroism. First appearing during the Silver Age of comics, the League quickly became the gold standard for team-based adventures, battling threats to Earth and the wider galaxy, like Starro the Conqueror and Despero. Over the years, they’ve evolved into symbols of hope, representing not just rescue efforts but the pursuit of a brighter future. Their influence is so vast that they even inspired the Justice Legion centuries later in the 853rd Century, and they’re consistently called upon whenever the entire multiverse faces danger.
The Justice League has grown massively over time, especially with the creation of Justice League Unlimited, which now includes almost every active superhero. However, it’s important to remember the original founders – the seven heroes who started it all. They remain incredibly impactful figures. In this article, we’ll be evaluating how significant each of those original seven members is to current DC Comics storylines in 2026. We’re focusing solely on their present influence, and while they’re all important, you might be surprised by how much their roles have changed over the years. Let’s dive in and rank them!
7) Flash

It feels strange to rank the Flash so low, but Barry Allen, the original Flash of the Justice League, lost his powers after the Absolute Power storyline. The current Flash comic series focuses on Wally West, and while Barry still makes occasional appearances and his legacy is acknowledged, he’s no longer actively fighting crime. He’s found a new purpose, though, as he’s now documenting the DC Universe’s history by writing New History of the DC Universe.
This position could be crucial soon, especially after King Omega Darkseid attacked Barry’s laptop in the recent DC K.O. event. While Barry may not always be at his fastest, his knowledge has the power to significantly impact the future. He still understands the multiverse better than anyone, and with a major crisis looming, his expertise will likely be essential to restoring order once everything is settled.
6) Martian Manhunter

It’s a shame to place Martian Manhunter, J’onn, at number six on our list. He’s often been overlooked compared to other founding members of the Justice League, particularly when it comes to having his own dedicated stories. While he shines within Justice League adventures, his teammates all have their own solo series. Given the League’s large roster, that leaves little room to highlight Martian Manhunter’s importance. He remains DC’s most powerful telepath and a reliable ally, but he isn’t currently as prominent as his peers. He is appearing in Action Comics (2016) alongside Superboy, which at least gives him some focus.
5) Green Lantern

Hal Jordan remains the most celebrated hero of the Green Lantern Corps. This was recently reinforced when his name appeared in the ancient Book of Oa, granting him prophetic visions. Leaving Earth under Kyle’s protection, Hal has ventured into space to discover the looming catastrophe facing the Corps. As the universe’s primary peacekeeping force, any threat to the Green Lanterns could affect everything, and Hal is at the heart of it. Even with his departure from Earth, his role is becoming increasingly vital.
4) Aquaman

Being an Aquaman fan is exciting right now! Aquaman, also known as Arthur, has become incredibly powerful by connecting with a fundamental force called the Blue, which links all water throughout the universe. After his recent adventures, he’s aiming even higher than protecting Earth’s oceans. He’s now Emperor Aquaman and plans to extend his rule to all water-bearing worlds across the cosmos. This means Atlantis is becoming a major force in the universe, and Aquaman’s role is about to become far more significant.
3) Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a central figure in the DC Universe, alongside Batman and Superman. She’s currently at the heart of a major storyline called “Wonder War,” which will determine the fate of Earth – whether it remains free or falls under the control of a powerful villain called the Matriarch. Only Wonder Woman has the power to stop her. Beyond this world-altering conflict, Wonder Woman also co-leads the Justice League with Batman, offering a hopeful and trusting perspective that balances his more cautious approach, making her an essential leader for the superhero team.
2) Batman

Batman remains one of DC’s most significant characters. Like Wonder Woman, he’s a leader in the superhero world and a core member of DC’s central trio. Although his stories don’t usually deal with universe-level threats as often as others, he consistently has more ongoing comic book titles than anyone else. At any given time, a large portion of DC’s published comics feature Batman or characters from his extended family. Out of the thirty ongoing series DC publishes, ten focus on the iconic Gotham vigilante and his supporting cast. Additionally, five out of the ten ongoing limited series are Batman-related. DC clearly favors Batman, and he will continue to be essential to their universe.
1) Superman

Superman is the key to everything happening in DC’s universe, even though he’s currently missing. He won a major tournament in DC K.O. and turned down the chance to become a god, sending Darkseid away for now. Since then, he’s disappeared, telling everyone he had important business to attend to. This sparked the “Reign of the Superboys” and now the ongoing search for him, known as “Hunt For Superman.” Everyone across the DC universe considers Superman the greatest hero and knows he’s the only one who could truly defeat Darkseid. They’ll need him again when Darkseid inevitably returns.
Superman isn’t just a hero; he’s the foundation of the entire superhero concept. He was the first, creating the standard by which all others are measured. Even centuries in the future, his example inspires heroes like the Legion of Super-Heroes. His greatest enemy, Darkseid, is entirely focused on defeating him, while Superman consistently works to improve the DC Universe. He’s arguably the most important superhero ever, and his influence alone elevates every other character and story within DC.
