Few guest characters in fighting games are as well-suited as horror icons in Mortal Kombat. Their frightening nature adds some of the most memorable fighters to the series. The game’s extreme violence and blood perfectly complement characters from horror films, though some transitions to the game have been more successful than others. Over the years, Netherrealm Studios has done a good job of incorporating many horror classics, with varying degrees of success.
It’s tricky to define which guest characters in Mortal Kombat truly fit the horror theme. While characters like The Terminator and Robocop (from Mortal Kombat 11) are popular additions, they come from action franchises, not horror. Other guests, such as Conan the Barbarian, Rambo, The Joker, Omni-Man, and Homelander, also don’t quite match the specific horror style that Mortal Kombat usually incorporates.
6. Freddy Krueger (Mortal Kombat 9)

The first guest character to appear in a Mortal Kombat game was Freddy Krueger, the iconic villain from the Nightmare on Elm Street films. This version of Freddy was unique, sporting a second clawed glove to help him stand out. Despite not being a typical fighter, he was a creative addition to the game, able to summon claws as both projectiles and traps, and using his signature knife-fingers as powerful weapons. His finishing moves, or fatalities, directly referenced memorable kills from his movies, making him a highlight of the 2011 Mortal Kombat game.
While this guest character had potential, later horror adaptations improved on a few things. Notably, Freddy Krueger had very little spoken dialogue, which diminished a key part of his personality. Robert Englund’s iconic voice is central to Freddy Krueger’s enduring popularity, but the limitations of Mortal Kombat 9 probably prevented its full use. Although Englund did voice the DC villain Scarecrow in Injustice 2, his most famous role remained largely silent in this appearance.
Freddy Krueger feels like an odd fit in Mortal Kombat compared to other guest characters. He’s a horror villain known for psychological torment rather than direct combat, even in Freddy vs Jason. The game’s version of Freddy leaned heavily into the style of the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, which wasn’t well-received by many horror fans. While an interesting choice, Freddy’s appearance ultimately didn’t have as much impact as later guest fighters.
5. Leatherface (Mortal Kombat X)

Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre surprised many players when he joined the roster of Mortal Kombat X, but he was a great addition as the game’s second horror character. Mortal Kombat X‘s unique variation system allowed players to choose from three different versions of Leatherface, each inspired by his various looks in the films. Whether it was the ‘Butcher’ variation with a mallet, or a version sporting make-up and throwing his chainsaw, there were plenty of ways to play as this iconic villain.
Leatherface’s main issue in the game was that he got overshadowed by some incredibly popular guest characters. While other fighters in Mortal Kombat X had unique abilities, Leatherface stood out for just how violent he was – even more so than the game’s long-running characters. He’s a capable fighter thanks to his fast attacks and chainsaw, but he lacks the complexity and memorable moves that make other characters truly shine.
4. Jason Vorhees (Mortal Kombat X)

Jason Voorhees, the iconic killer from the Friday the 13th movies, was the first horror character added to Mortal Kombat X. This marked the first time Mortal Kombat fully recreated a horror character, establishing a template for all future guest characters. The character is packed with references to the Friday the 13th films, making him feel like he stepped directly out of one of the movies.
Jason stands out as a fantastic guest character in fighting games because his moves reflect his personality and style from the Friday the 13th films. He has three different versions: one with his iconic machete, and two that focus on powerful, close-quarters combat without weapons. Whether he’s delivering crushing choke slams, painful grabs, or swinging his massive machete, Jason feels incredibly strong. While he shares some similarities with characters like Leatherface, Jason’s attacks are more measured and impactful.
Jason’s biggest weakness is that his character feels a bit empty and lacks defining traits. However, when he’s powered up, he can become incredibly powerful, even invincible in some cases, and gain supernatural abilities. Certain versions of Jason can even teleport to startle opponents or take control of their movements, making them feel completely vulnerable. Perhaps his most terrifying ability is his power to return from defeat, allowing him to chase after enemies one final time.
3. The Alien (Mortal Kombat X)

The Alien character was cleverly added to Mortal Kombat X by having a Tarkatan host a new Xenomorph. This resulted in a creature that blended elements of the Alien with Baraka’s species, fitting naturally into the world of Mortal Kombat. However, this version of the Alien felt a little strange, as its human-like shape differed significantly from the terrifying, animalistic Alien seen in Ridley Scott’s original 1979 film.
The Alien is widely considered one of the most powerful characters ever created in Mortal Kombat X. They were incredibly fast and dangerous, attacking with a whipping tail and biting strikes. Different versions of the character offered players a lot of options, all drawing on the terrifying details of the Alien universe – like laying traps with Facehugger eggs and coating themselves in acidic blood to harm opponents. The character even features a special Fatality that brings in the Alien Queen, making them a truly unique addition to the Mortal Kombat series.
2. Ghostface (Mortal Kombat 1)

The newest character added to Mortal Kombat is Ghostface, who’s part of the second wave of downloadable content for Mortal Kombat 1’s Definitive Edition. Initially, Ghostface appeared to be another typical slasher character, similar to Leatherface or Jason, simply using a knife to attack. However, fans were surprised to find that Ghostface offered a unique, self-aware take on the history of guest characters in Mortal Kombat, much like the Scream movies playfully comment on horror movie tropes.
The Ghostface character in Mortal Kombat wasn’t simply a disguise worn by one person, like Billy Loomis in Scream. Instead, the mask represented various characters from Mortal Kombat‘s history. It was a mystery to discover who was behind the mask, especially when multiple Ghostfaces began attacking the other characters. Ultimately, Ghostface was revealed to be both Kobra and Kira – fighters who hadn’t appeared in a Mortal Kombat game since the 3D era – and each character had their own special moves.
This unique take on the Ghostface character makes him memorable among the game’s other fighters, using the same clever tactic that made the Scream movies so popular. Beyond the intriguing mystery surrounding him, Ghostface is also a really enjoyable character to play, with the ability to call in other masked villains to create powerful attacks and keep opponents on the defensive. Mortal Kombat 1‘s assist system, built around Kameo fighters, was the perfect fit for Ghostface, integrating seamlessly with the game’s mechanics.
1. The Predator (Mortal Kombat X)

Many people forget that the original 1987 film, The Predator, was primarily a horror movie, featuring one of the most terrifying villains in cinematic history. While the Predator has become known for action, its scary origins make it a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat, and arguably the best guest character the fighting game series has ever had. The Predator offers everything fans could want – from its iconic green blood to a diverse and engaging fighting style.
The Predator’s first downloadable content in Mortal Kombat X features three distinct fighting styles that really capture what makes the character iconic. ‘The Hunter’ style equips him with traps and gadgets from the films. ‘Hish-Qu-Ten’ focuses on his powerful plasma caster. And for players who like a fast-paced attack, the ‘Warrior’ style lets The Predator remove his mask, triggering a self-destruct sequence mirroring his defeat in the original movie.
The Predator character is all about quick, skillful fighting, showcasing their experience as a hunter. As a fighting game addition, they’re naturally equipped for battle with weapons like wrist blades and a spear, perfect for impressive combos. When new characters are added to Mortal Kombat, they’re often compared to The Predator, setting a high bar for how well a horror icon can be integrated into the game’s established lineup.
