October always brings a lot of new horror movies. While scary films come out every month – they consistently perform well in theaters – October offers even more for horror fans than months like July. This year is no different, and we’re going to list all of the major new movies coming to theaters in October 2025. However, we didn’t include psychological thrillers, such as After the Hunt. We also left out films with very limited releases, meaning most people won’t be able to see them. Good examples of this are Scared Shless and the poorly-reviewed Fk My Son!. Other movies in this category include Dream Eater, the supernatural mystery Shelby Oaks, and the horror comedy zombie film Queens of the Dead, starring Katy O’Brian. Finally, we didn’t include re-releases. We apologize to fans of The Devil’s Rejects, Casper, ParaNorman, and the first three Twilight movies.
A few horror films are heading straight to streaming this October and are worth checking out. The biggest one is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, arriving on Netflix October 17th. Other streaming horror options include Vicious, featuring Dakota Fanning and Kathryn Hunter (known as Eedy Karn in Andor), and Hulu’s reimagining of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which will be available starting October 22nd.
6) Good Boy
Dogs that are loving and protective have often appeared in horror movies. We’ve seen them in films like The Amityville Horror, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Gremlins, The Lost Boys, and many others. However, Good Boy takes a different approach… it centers the story around the dog itself – you could even call him the puptagonist!
This movie is a haunted house story, but it’s told from the point of view of a dog (played by the director, Ben Leonberg’s, real dog, Indy). If that sounds like just a fun idea, don’t worry – Good Boy has a strong 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now. IFC and Shudder will release the film on October 3rd, and it’s expected to play in most major movie theaters.
5) Shell
I’ve been following awards season closely, and 2024’s standout, The Substance, is really making waves – especially among critics who’ve now seen Shell. While Max Minghella’s film, starring Elisabeth Moss and Kate Hudson, isn’t racking up quite the same awards as Coralie Fargeat’s challenging horror film, it’s definitely getting some positive buzz. It’s a horror comedy that, while not a frontrunner, is certainly making an impression. Worth checking out, in my opinion.
Moss stars as Samantha Lake, an actress whose career is losing momentum but finds new hope when she’s mentored by Zoe Shannon (Hudson), the CEO of a wellness company. However, things aren’t as they seem with this SHELL company. Shell will be released by Republic Pictures on October 3rd. While it will have a limited theatrical run, it will also be available on digital platforms that same day.
4) Bone Lake
Mercedes Bryce Morgan’s erotic horror film Bone Lake is receiving excellent reviews, particularly for its psychological horror elements and the performance of Maddie Hasson, who impressed audiences last year in Elevation. The story centers around a young couple who find themselves stranded in a mansion with another couple. Initially, things seem calm, but the relationships between the four quickly change, exposing secrets from everyone’s past.
The highly anticipated horror thriller is coming to theaters on October 3rd, with showings planned at most major cinema chains. Bone Lake is the third film directed by Bryce Morgan, following his previous works, Fixation and Spoonful of Sugar.
3) Coyotes
As a film buff, I’m really intrigued by Coyotes. It’s a comedy horror movie starring the adorable real-life couple Justin Long and Kate Bosworth, and the premise is wild! It takes those coyotes you see wandering around the Hollywood Hills – you know, the ones everyone’s used to – and turns them into seriously scary, bloodthirsty killers. But here’s the twist: they’ve moved on from chasing cats and little critters… now humans are on the menu! It sounds like a fun, slightly terrifying ride.
Similar to the last three films, Coyotes is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 3rd, brought to you by Aura Entertainment. While it will initially be shown in select cities, it will also be available in larger moviegoing areas.
2) The Astronaut
In The Astronaut, Kate Mara stars as Sam Walker, an astronaut who is being watched by government officials in her own home. Why? Because she thinks an alien followed her back to Earth.
I’m so excited for this new sci-fi horror adventure, especially since it focuses on extraterrestrials! It’s coming out on October 17th, and I’ve learned that Vertical is handling the limited release in theaters. What’s really cool is that it will be available on digital platforms the very same day – I can’t wait to watch it! It seems like a fantastic way to experience the film, either in a theater or at home.
1) Black Phone 2
Four years after Sinister director Scott Derrickson started a new horror series with The Black Phone, he’s back with Black Phone 2 to continue the success. This is set to be the biggest horror release in October 2025, and it’s expected to perform as well as, or even better than, the first film, which grossed $161.4 million worldwide.
Black Phone 2 brings back most of the actors from the first film, including Ethan Hawke, despite the fact that his character, the Grabber, died at the end of the original movie. The new film will be released in theaters across the country beginning October 17th.
