In total, eight films make up the Predator series, with eleven humans getting an opportunity to battle the titular extraterrestrials, known as the Yautja or Predators. These creatures were initially created by screenwriters Jim and John Thomas, marking their debut in 1987. The Predator franchise has since grown into a collection of mostly self-contained movies that span over a decade. Each film primarily centers around one or more human characters who find themselves engaged in a struggle against an advanced alien species, the Predators, who enjoy hunting other lifeforms for recreation and can hide themselves using camouflage technology.
The Predators stand out among other cinematic aliens due to their rigorous ethical rules, targeting only the deadliest beings as their quarry – those they believe are the most deserving. Over time, these hunters have earned a fearsome reputation throughout the cosmos for their strength and brutality towards various life-forms. However, surprisingly, it is often humans who manage to defeat them. To date, eight Predator films have been made, and in nearly every instance, humans have emerged victorious against these fierce creatures.
The collection of films known as the “Predator” series includes “Predator” from 1987, “Predator 2” from 1990, “Predators” from 2010, “The Predator” from 2018, “Prey” from 2022, and the upcoming animated film “Predator: Killer of Killers,” set for release in 2025. A new live-action installment titled “Predator: Badlands” is scheduled to debut in November 2025. The series has also collaborated with the “Alien” franchise, featuring battles in “Alien vs. Predator” from 2004 and “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” from 2007. In total, across these eight projects, excluding “Badlands“, eleven humans have been fortunate enough to slay the most formidable hunter in the cosmos; however, this triumph often comes with a heavy price.
11) Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer in Predator (1987)
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic moment in 1987’s “Predator” when none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch, became the first human on-screen to take down a Predator. Dutch, a battle-hardened special forces officer with a past in Vietnam, was leading a team of mercenaries in Val Verde. Little did they know, they were being hunted by an extraterrestrial predator.
One by one, the Predator picked off Dutch’s team, leaving only the remnants to realize their dire situation. In a twist of fate, Dutch discovered that camouflaging his body heat with mud made him invisible to the Predator’s thermal vision. Seizing this opportunity, he managed to slay the alien in an epic showdown.
In my perspective as a movie connoisseur, let me share some insights about an exhilarating scene from the classic film we all know and love. Our protagonist, Dutch, devises a cunning plan against the formidable Predator. He cleverly lays a trap and camouflages himself in mud, drawing the monster’s attention with loud, attention-grabbing noises.
Dutch manages to inflict wounds on this stealthy beast and even damages its cloaking device – quite an impressive feat! However, as fate would have it, Dutch’s muddy disguise washes away in a nearby river. But the resourceful Dutch doesn’t give up; he continues to lead the Predator towards a counterweight that he strategically positions above him.
With a swift move, Dutch drops the counterweight, crushing the relentless adversary, causing severe injuries to the Predator. Yet, this seemingly victorious battle takes an unexpected turn as the Predator reacts by triggering its self-destruct device. In a heartbeat, our hero finds refuge and miraculously survives the ensuing explosion, emerging from this confrontation with the fearsome alien warrior still standing tall.
10) Lieutenant Mike Harrigan in Predator 2 (1990)
As a die-hard movie fan, let me tell you about my experience with the 1990’s sequel to “Predator,” titled “Predator 2.” Unlike the original that took place in a fictional Central American locale, this one brings the terrifying creature straight into the heart of Los Angeles. The LAPD Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, skillfully portrayed by Danny Glover, finds himself squaring off against this alien predator during his investigations into a brutal gang war. However, it wasn’t long before Harrigan found himself entangled in the Predator’s actions.
As the story unfolds, Harrigan’s pursuit of the extraterrestrial adversary leads him to the Predator’s spaceship. In an epic showdown, he engages the creature and manages to claim victory by using its own lethal Smart Disc weapon against it. This act of heroism didn’t go unnoticed by other Predators who bestowed upon Harrigan a trophy, acknowledging his conquest of the universe’s most formidable hunter.
9) US Military in Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
In the 2004 movie “Alien vs. Predator”, no humans were responsible for killing predators. However, its sequel, “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007), introduced the Predalien and a skilled Predator named Wolf to the small town of Gunnison, Colorado. The Predalien and Xenomorph face-huggers wreaked havoc, leading to an unstoppable rampage. This chaos prompted the U.S. military to drop a tactical nuclear bomb on Gunnison, wiping out everything within the town, both human and non-human life forms. “Requiem” was met with negative reviews by critics, but the Predator franchise has consistently referenced the Alien franchise in subsequent films, such as the upcoming “Predator: Badlands”, which introduces an android created by Weyland-Yutani.
8) Nikolai in Predators (2010)
2010’s film “Predators” deviated from the usual pattern of “Predator” movies by transporting a band of skilled human warriors to an alien world, as opposed to the Predators coming to Earth. In this movie, the humans were gathered on a planet that functions as a hunting ground for two warring Predator factions. However, these humans proved to be more formidable than their hunters. Throughout their stay on the extraterrestrial realm, the humans became the prey of three Predators: Tracker, Berserker, and Falconer. Notably, Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov) killed Tracker by detonating both himself and Tracker in a self-sacrificing act to provide his fellow humans with additional time to escape.
7) Hanzo in Predators (2010)
In the world of Yakuza, the enforcer and assassin named Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien) showcased one of the most remarkable Predator fights in the series. He engaged in a deadly duel against a Predator known as Falconer, armed with a katana. Before this epic battle, Changchien had honed his skills through training in the martial art of kendo, which he effectively utilized during Hanzo’s fight against Falconer. Regrettably, Hanzo succumbed to injuries sustained during their encounter, providing valuable time for the rest to reach the Predators’ camp and search for a means to return to Earth.
6) Royce in Predators (2010)
In this alternate rendition: Adrien Brody’s former US Special Operations Forces soldier-turned-mercenary, Royce, guides a team of humans into the Predators’ game reserve realm. Before departing to Earth with a rescued Predator, Royce encounters an unexpected attack by Berserker, who slays his extraterrestrial ally and seemingly destroys their spaceship. Remarkably, Royce manages to live through the blast, and in a desperate move, sets explosives on Edwin (Topher Grace) as bait to entice Berserker out, causing injury. This tactic allows Royce to confront Berserker in a violent and ethically debatable scene, ultimately beheading the Predator.
5) Quentin “Quinn” McKenna in The Predator (2018)
I’ve got to say, as a fan of the Predator series, I found 2018’s The Predator to be one of the less impressive additions to the franchise, despite boasting a strong cast. In this film, Boyd Holbrook portrays Quinn, a US Army Ranger sniper, who has multiple encounters with a Predator after it lands on Earth. At first, he manages to subdue one, and later, with the assistance of his son, Rory (played by Jacob Tremblay), and Casey, an evolutionary biologist (Olivia Munn), he goes on to kill another, larger Predator. Throughout Shane Black’s installment in the Predator franchise, Quinn demonstrates himself to be a formidable adversary.
4) Naru in Prey (2022)
Instead of The Predator, the 2022 film Prey significantly refreshed the Predator franchise, garnering positive reviews. Created by Dan Trachtenberg, who also worked on subsequent films within the series, Prey transported viewers to the Great Plains in 1719. In this setting, a young Comanche healer named Naru, portrayed by Amber Midthunder, battles against a Predator to safeguard her tribe. By outwitting the creature, which she nicknamed Mupitsi, multiple times, she ultimately deceives it into killing itself with its own spear. After beheading the beast, she ascends to the position of War Chief within her tribe, and her tale has since been referenced in Prey’s animated sequel.
3) Ursa in Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Dan Trachtenberg has revisited the Predator universe to create “Predator: Killer of Killers,” the franchise’s inaugural adult animated installment. This exciting venture weaves together three distinct narratives, each featuring fresh human characters squaring off against Predators across different eras of history, culminating in a thrilling climax.
In the opening act, entitled “The Shield,” we meet Ursa (portrayed by Lindsay LaVanchy), a valiant Viking warrior from 841. In this tale, she courageously fights off and vanquishes a Predator that had unexpectedly attacked her clan, only to suffer an unimaginable loss – the life of her beloved son, Anders (Damien Haas).
2) Kenji and Kiyoshi Kamakami in Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
In the second chapter of “Predator: Master of Masters,” titled “The Sword,” we journey to Japan in 1609, where we encounter siblings Kenji and Kiyoshi Kamakami, portrayed by Louis Ozawa Changchien (previously known for his role as Hanzo in Predators). They are engaged in a struggle to inherit their father’s position as a samurai lord. Fast-forward 20 years, Kiyoshi now holds the title of lord, while Kenji has been banished. However, Kenji returns to challenge his brother, leading to an encounter with a Predator. The brothers join forces to eliminate and slay the Predator, but Kiyoshi succumbs to injuries sustained during their fierce battle.
1) John J. Torres in Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
In the third instalment of “Predator: Killer of Killers,” entitled “The Bullet,” we delve into a story set during World War II, revolving around US Navy fighter pilot John J. Torres. Torres is on a mission in North Africa, where he encounters an enigmatic aircraft wreckage. Upon closer inspection, he realizes it’s an alien spaceship – a Predator craft. This creature eliminates Torres’ squadron, but Torres manages to lure the monster into its own destruction. However, Torres himself is captured by another Predator ship. After regaining consciousness following suspended animation, Torres allies with two other abducted individuals, Ursa and Kenji, to continue battling and eliminating more Predators.
As a film fanatic, I can’t help but marvel at the intriguing cliffhanger of “Predator: Killer of Killers”. Torres and Kenji miraculously escape the Predator ship in the final scenes, yet our brave warrior Ursa is recaptured and returned to suspended animation with other prisoners. The presence of Naru from “Prey” among these captives hints at a chilling possibility: could it be that every human who has outsmarted a Predator throughout history was then abducted? This tantalizing notion opens up the potential for iconic characters like Dutch, Mike Harrigan, Royce, and Quinn to reappear in future “Predator” movies. Intriguingly, this could even happen as early as 2025 with “Predator: Badlands”. The suspense is almost unbearable!
