The Hulk has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time, first appearing in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. While not every Hulk story has been a success, he’s consistently been an important character – sometimes taking the lead, sometimes fighting alongside the Avengers, and often playing a supporting role. He’s been central to many of the MCU’s biggest storylines, especially throughout the Infinity Saga, making him a well-known and significant figure in the franchise.
Hulk’s appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have resulted in a variety of storylines, some of which fans love and others dislike. The quality of these stories varies greatly – some make Hulk a powerful and essential character, while others make him feel unnecessary. Here’s a ranking of every Hulk story in the MCU, from the weakest to the strongest.
7) Mentor Arc in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

Despite being a Marvel TV show, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law hasn’t resonated with many viewers, and the way Hulk is portrayed reflects this. He appears as a mentor to his cousin, She-Hulk, after her transformation, but the storyline doesn’t do much for his character. In fact, it makes Hulk seem unnecessary and weak, and it’s a surprisingly brief appearance, making it one of the least compelling Hulk stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
6) MCU Introduction in The Incredible Hulk

The first Hulk movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced the character and explained his beginnings. It didn’t show how Bruce Banner first turned into the Hulk, but focused on his struggles to understand and manage the transformation while being chased by General Ross and the villain, the Abomination. Overall, the movie’s story isn’t very memorable and hasn’t significantly influenced the Hulk’s role in later MCU films.
5) Performance Issues in Avengers: Infinity War

The MCU has sometimes portrayed the Hulk as weaker than expected, but one of the most noticeable instances is in Avengers: Infinity War. After a decisive defeat by Thanos, Hulk essentially disappears for the rest of the film. Bruce Banner can’t trigger a transformation, and ultimately, he participates in the Battle of Wakanda wearing the Hulkbuster armor because he can’t convince Hulk to overcome his fear.
4) Joining a Team in The Avengers

The 2012 film The Avengers was a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing the iconic team to life on screen. It was particularly notable for its humorous portrayal of the Hulk, as the story showed him learning to cooperate with others for the first time. This was a significant improvement over his earlier solo film, providing a more compelling look into his character and demonstrating how he could effectively join forces with other Marvel heroes.
3) Professor Hulk’s Debut & Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame

Professor Hulk is a particularly strong version of the Hulk from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blending Bruce Banner’s intelligence with the Hulk’s incredible power. While his first appearance in Avengers: Endgame wasn’t a grand introduction, his role in the film – traveling through time to gather the Infinity Stones and reverse Thanos’s actions – was a highlight. It was one of the Hulk’s most heroic moments in the MCU and helped integrate him effectively into the large team of heroes.
2) Savage Hulk & Romance Arc in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Despite being considered by some as the weakest Avengers film, Age of Ultron actually did a great job with the Hulk’s storyline. The movie showed two important sides to his character: first, it introduced a more aggressive, ‘Savage’ Hulk through Scarlet Witch’s powers, and second, it began the romantic relationship between Bruce Banner and Black Widow. This dual development deepened the tragedy of the Hulk’s character and created a stronger foundation for his role in future movies.
1) Gladiator Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok is known for being one of the funniest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Hulk is a big reason why. The movie introduces Hulk living in hiding on the planet Sakaar, where he’s forced to fight as a gladiator. It shows the development of a fun friendship between Hulk, Thor, and Valkyrie, and it gives a more in-depth look at Hulk’s character. Because of this, it’s still the best story featuring the Hulk in the MCU.
