When John Wick arrived in theaters in 2014, captivating audiences with its stylish action and unforgettable assassin, it became a rare success story in Hollywood. Truly original film series that earn billions of dollars without relying on pre-existing books, comics, or other established material are exceptionally uncommon.
The “John Wick” franchise has exploded in just over a decade, with four movies, a spinoff film, and a prequel TV series already released. And it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon – more prequels, sequels, and spinoffs are likely on the way, possibly sooner than fans realize.
Donnie Yen‘s Untitled Caine Spinoff Will Finally Roll Cameras in April
Donnie Yen first played the blind assassin Caine in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, where he fought Keanu Reeves’ character in Paris and appeared to fatally injure him. The film ended with both Wick and Caine being freed from their obligations, sparking rumors of a spin-off movie focused on Caine. In April 2025, that spin-off was officially confirmed at CinemaCon. The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin is writing the script, and Donnie Yen is set to direct and star in the project, which is described as a fast-paced, Hong Kong-style action thriller in English.
Fans had to wait nearly a year for news, but in March 2026, Deadline reported that filming for Caine would start in April. While the story is still a secret, Rina Sawayama—the Japanese-British pop singer who recently appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 as Shimazu Akira—has joined the cast.
Donnie Yen has big plans for his new film. He told Deadline he wants to create the ultimate martial arts action movie – something that fans of John Wick will enjoy, but with more emotional weight and a unique visual style.
John Wick: Chapter 5 Will See the Baba Yaga Facing New Foes
Surprisingly, talk of John Wick: Chapter 5 started almost three years before Chapter 4 was released. Lionsgate initially intended to film both movies consecutively. However, director Chad Stahelski convinced the studio to allow time between filming sessions. He believed he needed that break to grow as a director and ensure both films were the best they could be.
In the end, allowing Chapter 4 the necessary development time proved to be the correct decision. The film became both a creative success and a commercial hit, leaving fans eager for future John Wick stories, even though it appeared the main character died at the end. Five years after initial discussions, production finally began in April 2025, with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski both returning for the project.
Details are still scarce about the fifth John Wick movie, but director Chad Stahelski told Empire magazine it will be significantly different from previous installments. This is because, for the first time, the film won’t involve the High Table, the powerful and secretive organization of assassins that has controlled Wick’s world since the beginning of the series in 2014.
According to Stahelski, a fifth John Wick movie will only happen with a completely new story featuring the character. He clarified it won’t be a direct continuation of the High Table storyline, as John has resolved his personal grief. He envisions the film as something fresh and exciting, promising a trailer that will immediately grab viewers’ attention. Interestingly, he also suggested that the plot of a potential Chapter 5 would connect to storylines established in the spin-off projects.
An Animated Prequel Movie Will Finally Tell the Tale of Wick’s “Impossible Task”
A key part of the story behind the John Wick films is what happened before the first movie began. We learn that crime boss Viggo Tarasov allowed John Wick to retire and marry the woman he loved, Helen, only after Wick completed a dangerous job for him. The details of this task were never fully revealed, but Tarasov clearly believed it was a mission Wick wouldn’t survive.
Because of this, many fans think John Wick was hired to take out all of Tarasov’s enemies in a single night. This job came up again in Chapter 2, where it was revealed that Italian mob boss Santino D’Antonio assisted Wick that night, though the details were never fully explained. As a result, this seemingly impossible task has become a popular mystery for fans to speculate about, and most expect the movies will always keep some of the details hidden.
In October 2024, Chad Stahelski revealed that the previously discussed anime prequel was being developed as an animated movie, promising to finally explain the mysterious and difficult task at the heart of the story. Then, in April 2025, the project was officially unveiled at CinemaCon. Shannon Tindle, known for directing Kubo and the Two Strings, will direct, and Vanessa Taylor, a writer from Game of Thrones, is writing the screenplay.
People described Tindle’s plan for the challenging project as amazing, and Stahelski expressed huge enthusiasm for creating an animated John Wick series. He even revealed that anime has long inspired his work on the films. Stahelski believes John Wick is a perfect fit for animation, explaining that it could allow them to build on the story, characters, and action in completely new and exciting ways.
John Wick: Under the High Table Will Give the Franchise’s Supporting Characters a Chance to Shine
The first TV series based on the John Wick movies premiered on Peacock in September 2023. However, The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a prequel set in the 1970s that showed how Winston Scott got his start, wasn’t a big hit with viewers. While Colin Woodell did a good job portraying a younger version of Ian McShane’s character, the show generally didn’t live up to expectations.
Chad Stahelski eventually stepped away from the original John Wick television show, stating that he and Keanu Reeves were only minimally involved after offering some initial advice. Despite this, Stahelski seemed interested in revisiting television, and in August 2024, a new series, John Wick: Under the High Table, was announced with both Stahelski and Reeves serving as executive producers.
As a huge fan of the John Wick universe, I’m really excited about this new series, Under the High Table! It’s going to take place after the events of Chapter 4, and Robert Levine – who did fantastic work on Black Sails – is running the show. Basically, it’s going to explore how the High Table reacts to everything that went down in the last movie. With John Wick finally out of their control, the Marquis gone, and Winston back in charge of the Continental, the High Table is seriously weakened – more vulnerable than we’ve ever seen them. It’s a fascinating setup, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
As the story progresses, a power imbalance will attract new characters eager to prove themselves, while some of the original, established characters will stick to their traditional methods. The show will also highlight popular supporting characters from the films, potentially bringing back favorites like Cassian, Sofia, and Mr. Nobody.
Several More Unconfirmed Spinoffs and Sequels Are Potentially In the Works
In addition to the already confirmed projects – Caine, John Wick: Chapter 5, the animated prequel, and John Wick: Under the High Table – the John Wick franchise is developing even more content. Len Wiseman, director of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, has discussed his plans for a follow-up to the spinoff, which was released in June 2025 and grossed $137.2 million globally.
Considering the movie cost $90 million to make, Lionsgate probably expected to earn significantly more at the box office to justify making a sequel. However, a continuation isn’t impossible, so it’s something to watch for.
One of the most unusual, yet potentially successful, ideas for a John Wick spin-off involves a Samurai-Western. Variety magazine reported in October 2025 that Austin Everett, known for The Traveler, had written a script for this original story, set within the John Wick universe.
This immediately caught the attention of Wick fans, but Everett quickly downplayed it with a laugh, saying, “That’s probably all I can reveal right now.” Could the next installment feature sword-fighting samurai, gunslingers, wild horses, and expansive landscapes? Fans are eager to find out.
