Voldemort wreaks havoc on the wizarding world of Harry Potter. After disappearing for a time, the Dark Lord returns to England in the 1970s and begins attempting to seize power. He wants to establish a society ruled by those with purely magical ancestry and ensure that non-magical people have no peace. This deeply concerns leading figures in the wizarding community, particularly Albus Dumbledore, who feels responsible for Voldemort’s growing power. To combat this, Dumbledore creates a secret organization—the Order of the Phoenix—to fight against the rising darkness.
Over time, the Order of the Phoenix experiences a lot of turnover as Voldemort and his Death Eaters eliminate its members. But when the films begin, a strong group of dedicated wizards and witches remain. Here’s a ranking of the Order’s most powerful members. Unfortunately, Hagrid doesn’t quite make the cut, as this list focuses on those who actively use wands.
10) Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley is a wonderful father figure to Harry when he first enters the wizarding world. He consistently prioritizes his family’s safety, often putting himself at risk to protect them. While he shines in his role as a Ministry employee, his contributions, though valuable, aren’t quite enough to place him among the very best characters.
9) Molly Weasley

Similar to her husband, Molly Weasley isn’t often directly involved in fighting during the Second Wizarding War. Instead, she turns their home into a safe place for members of the Order of the Phoenix, and she’s always ready to send her children and their friends supplies. However, Molly distinguishes herself from Arthur by bravely battling Bellatrix Lestrange at the Battle of Hogwarts, finally defeating a long-time enemy of the Order.
8) Nymphadora Tonks

Working as an Auror in the wizarding world is incredibly challenging, often involving dangerous confrontations with Death Eaters. Tonks was deeply committed to her work, but her loyalty to the Order of the Phoenix always came first. Throughout her career, she battled many dark wizards, and despite tragically dying in the Battle of Hogwarts, her achievements remain significant.
7) Sirius Black

The Black family holds a significant position of power and influence throughout the Harry Potter series. However, Sirius Black, after enduring years of wrongful imprisonment in Azkaban, isn’t a strong physical fighter when we meet him. Instead, he focuses on secretly investigating Voldemort’s plans. Because he’s past his prime, Bellatrix is able to surprise and overpower him.
6) Kingsley Shacklebolt

I was always so impressed by Kingsley Shacklebolt during the Second Wizarding War. He was a true hero, quietly joining the Order of the Phoenix and going undercover at the Ministry of Magic. He risked everything to get information to Dumbledore and the others, all while being an incredibly powerful wizard. I heard stories about him dueling Death Eaters and somehow making it through every major battle unscathed – a truly remarkable Auror and a vital part of the fight against Voldemort.
5) Remus Lupin

Tonks’s husband, Remus Lupin, is a very skilled wizard. He can cast the difficult Patronus Charm easily, and he also has a unique ability: he’s a werewolf. This means that during the full moon, he transforms into a dangerous creature who loses control. While he constantly works to manage this transformation, his werewolf side is undeniably powerful.
4) Minerva McGonagall

Honestly, if Professor McGonagall could just spend her days correcting students, I think she’d be thrilled! But poor thing, Hogwarts is always under attack, so she’s constantly having to step up and defend the school. She doesn’t get to really show off her power often, but when she does, it’s amazing – like that time she completely drove the Death Eaters out of the Great Hall. It was a fantastic moment!
3) Mad-Eye Moody

Mad-Eye Moody is renowned throughout the wizarding world for his skill in defeating Death Eaters. He dedicated years to fighting them as a leading Auror for the Ministry of Magic, and even after retiring, he remained a significant threat to Voldemort. Voldemort specifically targeted Moody because he recognized him as a serious obstacle to his plans.
2) Severus Snape

The Harry Potter series really puts Severus Snape through a lot. He struggles to connect with others, and the woman he loves ends up with someone who tormented him. Feeling isolated, Snape dedicates himself to his studies and becomes an incredibly skilled wizard. This knowledge makes him a valuable asset in battle, leading Voldemort to rely on him to finish what Draco Malfoy starts – eliminating Dumbledore if Draco fails.
1) Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore is considered the most powerful wizard of all time and a key leader of the Order of the Phoenix. He’s famously battled formidable dark wizards like Gellert Grindelwald and Voldemort, often being the sole obstacle to their plans. Though he eventually succumbs to a curse, Dumbledore’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire wizards for generations to come.
