In the Marvel Universe, magic is an incredibly potent but risky force. While it has limitations, a skilled magic user can achieve almost anything – from bringing people back to life to trapping powerful cosmic entities, and even altering reality itself. The most powerful magic user is known as the Sorcerer Supreme, a chosen champion selected by ancient divine beings called the Vishanti to protect Earth from mystical dangers. This role has existed since one million BC, with each Sorcerer Supreme choosing their successor when they deem them prepared.
Doctor Strange is the most well-known Sorcerer Supreme, but he isn’t the only one who’s held the title. Throughout history, many powerful magic users have either competed with Stephen Strange for the role, or stepped in to protect the world when he couldn’t. While some have only been Sorcerer Supreme briefly, we’re going to look at those who truly made a difference in the modern era and rank them based on how well they performed their duties.
7) Doctor Doom
During the Blood Hunt storyline, Doctor Doom cleverly manipulated events to become Sorcerer Supreme. He then used this power to proclaim himself ruler of the world. While he did manage to establish a temporary, albeit forced, peace and successfully defended Earth from Dormammu, he was far from a benevolent Sorcerer Supreme. Doom used his position to impose a global fascist dictatorship, and his power came at a terrible cost: the endless torture of everyone in Latveria, who were exploited to fuel his magic. Ultimately, his reign left the world significantly worse off than before.
6) Scarlet Witch
Although Wanda hasn’t reached the level of villainy seen in Doctor Doom, she hasn’t made a significant impact yet either. After being chosen by mystical artifacts, she claimed the title of Sorcerer Supreme, which angered powerful entities called the Vishanti. Currently, she’s in a power struggle with her former teacher, Agatha Harkness. It’s unclear what Wanda will ultimately do, but it’s likely her actions won’t be as destructive as Doom’s, so she currently ranks sixth on this list.
5) Loki
Similar to Doctor Doom, Loki tricked Doctor Strange into giving up his title. However, Loki wasn’t after power for himself; he was trying to save the world. Knowing a dangerous threat called the Void was coming, Loki realized Strange couldn’t defeat it alone. He created a plan to make Strange work with him, and together they succeeded in defeating the Void. Loki then gave the title back. Although he only held the position briefly, Loki’s help in saving the world was significant.
4) Clea Strange
Clea has always been the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension, but she also briefly became Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. During this time, she protected Earth from the Blasphemy Cartel, a dangerous group that tried to take control of Death using an army of undead creatures, including an undead Sentry. Working alongside Stephen, who was serving Death at the time, she defeated the Cartel and saved the planet. Though her time as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme was short, Clea proved she could powerfully defend the world and combine her magic with Earth’s own, something many thought impossible.
3) Doctor Voodoo
Jericho Drumm, also known as Doctor Voodoo, became Sorcerer Supreme when Doctor Strange gave up the title, believing he’d compromised its values. Chosen for his inherent goodness, Doctor Voodoo proved himself a powerful and capable master of magic, despite specializing in only one form. He held the position for over three years – longer than any other Sorcerer Supreme besides Stephen Strange – and repeatedly saved the world, demonstrating he was exceptionally skilled at handling any magical dangers threatening Earth.
2) The Ancient One
Born over five centuries ago, Yao quickly became renowned as an exceptionally gifted magician. He repeatedly earned the title of Sorcerer Supreme, passing it on to worthy champions only to reclaim it upon their death – he’s held the position longer than anyone. He patiently awaits when the world needs his help, having trained Doctor Strange and fought countless magical dangers throughout his long life. Though he’s saved Earth more times than he can count, Yao acknowledges his prime is behind him and currently holds the title simply to find a successor.
1) Doctor Strange
Doctor Stephen Strange is undoubtedly the greatest Sorcerer Supreme. He began as a gifted but prideful doctor who faced immense loss. This low point led him to a new purpose, and despite making mistakes, he consistently rises to the challenge when the world needs saving. As the most accomplished magician alive, he’s overcome powerful magical threats like Dormammu, always driven by a heroic spirit. Though he might temporarily lose the title of Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange always embodies the role of a true hero.
