Star Trek is a hugely popular and influential science fiction franchise. It first captivated viewers in the 1960s with its forward-thinking concepts and messages of unity, and has since become a cornerstone of modern pop culture. The franchise has successfully adapted over the years, keeping its stories relevant for new generations. However, its long history sometimes leads to familiar storylines and tropes that fans occasionally point out.
Throughout its long history, Star Trek has shown us some truly heartbreaking character deaths – even for its main heroes. These deaths have often happened right on screen. However, the show also has a knack for bringing characters back to life, sometimes in surprising ways. While these returns haven’t always been permanent, it’s clear that many significant characters have managed to defy death and reappear in the Star Trek universe.
8) SAM
Many viewers saw SAM as a new character similar to Data from the original Star Trek, and she quickly became popular on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. As a Kasqian and the first photonic student at the Academy, she was a groundbreaking addition to the series. Although SAM appeared to be killed by the Furies in one episode, she was brought back to life in the very next episode, immediately undoing her death.
7) Tasha Yar
Tasha Yar’s death on Star Trek: The Next Generation was a shocking moment that left viewers stunned. While the show made it clear her death was permanent, the franchise found ways to bring the character back, most famously in the popular episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” which featured her return through an alternate timeline.
6) Neelix
Neelix experienced a deeply challenging situation in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Mortal Coil.” While not a typical horror story, the episode explored a crisis of faith for Neelix after he was killed in a shuttle accident and brought back to life using technology from Seven of Nine. The story centers on Neelix’s surprising lack of any spiritual experience during his short time as a deceased character, and it’s one of the few Star Trek stories to closely examine the implications of bringing a main character back from death.
5) Montgomery Scott
Scotty is one of the most recognizable characters from the original Star Trek series. Though many crew members wearing red shirts often met unfortunate ends, Scotty managed to survive for quite a while – despite being seemingly killed off once. In the second season episode “The Changeling,” a powerful probe called Nomad initially destroys Scotty, but then repairs him, bringing him back to life.
4) Data
Data is a hugely popular character from Star Trek: The Next Generation and a fan favorite across the entire Star Trek universe. He’s unique in that he’s died and been brought back to life multiple times. He famously sacrificed himself in Star Trek: Nemesis to save his crew, but returned, died again, and then reappeared in Star Trek: Picard.
3) Dr. “Bones” McCoy
Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, a key character from the original series, also experienced death and resurrection during the show. In the first season episode, “Shore Leave,” he’s killed by a knight while the crew is on a strange planet. However, as the planet’s mysteries are revealed, its guardian brings McCoy back to life, allowing him to resume his duties on the Enterprise.
2) Jean-Luc Picard
The Borg consistently rank among the most compelling villains in Star Trek history, and they played a key role in a dramatic arc for Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He was once captured and assimilated by the Borg, losing his individuality, but was later restored to his former self. Unfortunately, residual Borg DNA remained, eventually leading to his death. Thankfully, Picard wasn’t truly gone; his consciousness and memories were transferred into a new synthetic body, allowing his story to continue in Star Trek: Picard.
1) Spock
Spock is arguably the most recognizable character in all of Star Trek. His selfless death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is still considered a powerful and heartbreaking scene. Luckily, he was brought back to life in the next film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which allowed him to continue appearing in many more Star Trek movies.
