Every Mario Level in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (It Combines Multiple Games Into One)

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie, much like the 2023 film, is a heartfelt tribute to Nintendo’s history of video games. It’s packed with hidden references, fun surprises, and appearances that fans of Mario and other Nintendo franchises like Star Fox and Pikmin will enjoy. As the title suggests, the movie draws heavily from the Super Mario Galaxy games, bringing iconic elements and scenes to life. However, it doesn’t limit itself to just those games – fans can expect nods to many different parts of the Mario universe.

As a critic, I’ve always appreciated that Mario games, at their core, are about helping those in need. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie really digs deeper into its characters, giving them more to do than just exist as obstacles or rewards. What’s great is the story doesn’t feel episodic like jumping from one level to the next – it actually builds. And don’t worry, the filmmakers didn’t forget what makes Mario, well, Mario. They brilliantly weave in familiar levels and settings, sometimes with fun twists, and sometimes by bringing them directly from the games. Now, fair warning: from here on out, I’m going to be spoiling things about The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

13) Comet Observatory

The movie The Super Mario Galaxy Movie starts with a familiar place for gamers: the Comet Observatory, where Rosalina and Luma live. It looks similar to how it appears in the games – it has a wide, open area and tall towers that make it look like a large top. However, the movie version is much bigger and more detailed, with extra buildings and platforms everywhere. The Observatory also includes the Library that fans will recognize from the games.

12) Sand Kingdom

The movie introduces Mario and Luigi as they respond to a problem in Tostarena Town. The townspeople direct them to a strange, upside-down pyramid that’s making a frightening sound. This whole setup comes straight from the Sand Kingdom in the video game Super Mario Odyssey. However, Mario and Luigi’s costumes in the film look more like something out of Mad Max than their outfits in the game itself.

11) Peach’s Castle

As fans anticipated, Peach’s Castle from Super Mario 64 plays a central role in the new movie. The castle is just as large and complex on the inside as it looks from the outside, and the film lets us explore many more of its rooms and hallways, similar to what we’ve seen in The Super Mario Galaxy. However, it remains to be seen whether characters can actually jump into the paintings within the castle.

10) Toad Town

The lively Toad Town, known from the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games, reappears in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie after previously appearing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s much like you remember, filled with Toads living and working in their homes and shops. Mario and Luigi quickly work to resolve problems there in a fast-paced sequence.

9) Giant Land

The trailer also features a familiar world for both longtime and newer Mario fans: a scene of Mario and Luigi fleeing from enormous Goombas. This is a nod to two levels – Giant Land from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Supermassive Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2 – both known for their oversized enemies. While the scene takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, suggesting a connection to Super Mario Bros. 3, the galactic setting hints that Super Mario Galaxy 2 also played a role in its inspiration.

8) Drip Drop Galaxy (And More)

During their journey to the Gateway Galaxy in the movie, Peach and Toad fly past several planets that fans will recognize from the Super Mario Galaxy games. These include Drip Drop Galaxy, known for its large bodies of water and small islands, as well as quick glimpses of the Star Bunny planet and the Gusty Garden Galaxy.

7) Gateway Galaxy

Okay, so the Gateway Galaxy is in the movie, but don’t expect it to be exactly like the level in Super Mario Galaxy. Honestly, with the film not hitting every single planet from the games, it makes sense they reimagined it. Instead of being a self-contained level, it’s more of a central hub – think of it like a bustling airport where characters are coming and going. It’s a significant departure from the game, but honestly, it works within the context of the movie’s story.

6) Honeyhive Galaxy

The Honeyhive Galaxy, a memorable location from Super Mario Galaxy, also makes an appearance in the movie, though with significant differences. The film depicts the planet as being covered in giant flowers and containing a honey cave where bees seem to be forced into labor. The only element that remains largely the same is the Honey Queen, who is just as impressively large in the movie as she was in the original game.

5) Fossil Falls

In the movie, after Fox McCloud’s ship crashes, they end up on a seemingly peaceful planet. However, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi quickly discover its most dangerous resident: a hungry T. rex! Fans of Super Mario Odyssey will recognize this location as Fossil Falls from the Cascade Kingdom.

4) Bowser Jr.’s Airship Armada

Fans of Super Mario Galaxy will spot Bowser Jr.’s Airship Armada in the background as he returns to his father. The film shows many of these airships floating in space, but we don’t get to explore them—they remain an element of Mario’s world that hasn’t been fully featured in a movie yet.

3) Space Junk Galaxy

Bowser, Bowser Jr., and their Koopa army’s main hideout is called Space Junk Galaxy, and it’s specifically mentioned by name in the movie. While it looks quite different from the game Super Mario Galaxy, the planet Bowser within it seems heavily inspired by World Bowser from Super Mario 3D World, sharing a similar theme park-like design.

2) Freezeflame Galaxy

As Mario and his friends travel towards Bowser’s Planet, they quickly pass by familiar planets and galaxies from the games. They fly through the Lava Core Planet, and viewers can also spot others, like the planet shaped like a peanut.

1) World 1-4

Following a challenging sequence reminiscent of the user-created levels in Super Mario Maker, The Super Mario Bros. Movie features a classic Mario showdown: a battle on a bridge with Bowser. Just like the original level 1-4 in Super Mario Bros., Mario and Peach fight Bowser while running across a bridge, then ultimately chop it down with an axe, sending Bowser falling into the lava below.
