Christopher Nolan’s ambition reaches far, as he delves into the rich tapestry of ancient mythology for his upcoming film, titled The Odyssey. This adaptation is inspired by Homer’s epic poem and boasts an impressive ensemble of stars from the Marvel universe. Following the Academy Award triumph of Oppenheimer, Nolan is once again collaborating with familiar faces and introducing new talents for this mythological expedition. This grand-scale production will be filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, marking a significant international endeavor.
2026 finds me eagerly anticipating the cinematic voyage of “The Odyssey.” Christopher Nolan appears resolute in weaving grand blockbuster narratives with elite acting performances. And who else could be better for this epic endeavor than Marvel’s finest talents, all listed among the cast.
12) Anthony Molinari
Characters Played by Marvel: Role as S.H.I.E.L.D. Operative in Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and WandaVision among others.
Anthony Molinari might not be as widely recognized as some other actors, but his on-screen presence is undeniably striking. Although details about his part in The Odyssey are yet to be revealed, given his proficiency in stunt work, it’s likely that he will assume a more action-oriented role as the story unfolds through its epic voyage.
In the thrilling world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’ve had the privilege to slip into various roles here and there, both as a stunt performer and in minor acting parts. Some of my on-screen appearances include donning the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent uniform in Captain Marvel, portraying a police officer in Cloak & Dagger, playing a mob henchman in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and joining the militia in Wandavision. Although I haven’t always been the main character, I’ve been honored to contribute to the film and television industry for quite some time now.
Beyond his superhero roles, Molinari has amassed an impressive portfolio of tough, backup parts in productions like Argo, Jack Ryan, and The Equalizer 3. He is often cast in roles requiring a strong physical performance and commanding screen presence.
11) Bill Irwin
Marvel Role: Cary Loudermilk, Legion
Bill Irwin is also joining the The Odyssey cast, but his character is yet to be announced.
Fans of Marvel may recall Irwin’s part in FX’s Legion, where he portrayed the mutant scientist Cary Loudermilk, one of the co-founders of Summerland. Stepping away from the world of comic book superheroes, Irwin is a Tony Award-winning actor and clown (yes, that’s correct). His acting career boasts an impressive array of roles. He was both the puppeteer and voice behind TARS in Interstellar, starred in Rachel Getting Married, and is set to contribute significantly to Nolan’s upcoming projects.
10) Josh Stewart
Marvel Role: John Pilgrim, Marvel’s The Punisher
Josh Stewart has worked in both the pools of studios that produce comic book movies. He made an appearance in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, portraying Bane’s right-hand man, Barsad. However, it’s his Marvel roles that are more widely recognized. In season 2 of Netflix’s The Punisher, he played the chilling assassin John Pilgrim, whose mission was to track down and eliminate Amy Bendix. Stewart’s performance as Pilgrim was particularly notable in the series. Apart from superhero roles, Stewart is also renowned for providing the voice of CASE in Interstellar, along with his parts in The Collector and Criminal Minds.
9) Matt Damon — Odysseus
Marvel Role: Actor Loki, Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder; Redneck #2, Deadpool 2
Matt Damon stars as the lead character in Christopher Nolan’s film. Some of you might recognize him from his roles as an Asgardian actor in two Marvel’s Thor movies, or as he portrayed Loki. However, one of his most unexpected appearances was in Deadpool 2 where he shared the screen with Alan Tudyk, playing rednecks who were knocked out by Josh Brolin’s Cable. In The Odyssey, Damon assumes a much more serious role as Odysseus.
Without a doubt, Damon is among the most celebrated actors of his generation. He’s graced our screens in diverse roles, ranging from “Good Will Hunting” to the “Bourne Identity” series. This new project represents their third joint venture with Nolan, following “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer.
8) Will Yun Lee
Marvel Role: Harada, The Wolverine; Kirigi, Elektra (2005)
It’s possible you remember Will Yun Lee from his portrayal of Kenuichio Harada in the film “The Wolverine.” In this role, he was a skilled swordsman and guardian for Yashida. Prior to that, he played Kirigi in the 2005 movie “Elektra.” Furthermore, he lent his voice to various characters in the 2012 video game “The Amazing Spider-Man.
Lee has ventured into the DC universe, lending his voice to a Parasoldier Leader in “Superman: Unbound.” He has also provided voices for other video games such as “Sleeping Dogs” and “Call of Duty,” and he is recognized for his performances outside of Marvel in shows like “Altered Carbon,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Bionic Woman.
7) Logan Marshall-Green
Marvel Role: Jackson Brice/Shocker #1, Spider-Man: Homecoming
Actor Logan Marshall-Green has signed on for Nolan’s upcoming film, “The Odyssey,” playing a character yet unnamed. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans may recall him as the initial portrayal of Shocker in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Many people have mistakenly thought he was Tom Hardy, but they are not related. Marshall-Green has garnered his own recognition through impressive performances in movies like “Upgrade,” “Prometheus,” and “The Invitation.
6) Charlize Theron
Marvel Role: Clea, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Charlize Theron is officially part of the cast for “The Odyssey,” though specific character details haven’t been revealed yet. However, fans are quite confident that she will portray Circe, a captivating and treacherous sorceress who transforms Odysseus’ men into swine. And it’s safe to say she would excel in this role.
In an unexpected entrance within the closing moments of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Theron first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Clea, a sorceress hailing from the Dark Dimension. While specifics about the next “Doctor Strange” film are scarce at this point, given Theron’s cameo, it seems probable that she will play a more significant role in the upcoming third movie.
Beyond Marvel, Theron boasts a diverse acting portfolio. Her versatility is evident in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster (which earned her an Academy Award), Atomic Blonde, and The Old Guard.
5) Elliot Page
Marvel Role: Kitty Pryde, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past
Elliot Page played Kitty Pryde in the X-Men series produced by Fox, appearing in both “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” In the latter film, Pryde’s ability to phase was crucial, as it allowed Wolverine to journey back in time and prevent Trask’s Sentinels from causing destruction.
Initially, Page left a memorable impression on the silver screen with his debut in the movie “Juno”, and later shared screen time with Leonardo DiCaprio in “Inception”. More recently, Page has assumed the character of Viktor Hargreeves in Netflix’s series titled “The Umbrella Academy“.
4) Lupita Nyong’o
Marvel Role: Nakia, Black Panther & Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Lupita Nyong’o, who won an Academy Award, is adored by Marvel fans for her portrayal of Nakia in the initial Black Panther film and its sequel, Wakanda Forever. In the latter, her character gained added importance following T’Challa’s demise.
In a notable career milestone, she made her significant debut on the big screen as Patsey in “12 Years a Slave.” Since then, she has graced our screens in films like “Us,” “The Jungle Book,” and voiced Maz Kanata in “Star Wars.” Her latest remarkable performances include Samira, the lead character in “A Quiet Place: Part One,” and Roz, the primary voice role in Dreamworks’ movie “The Wild Robot.
3) Zendaya
Marvel Role: MJ, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled about Zendaya’s involvement in The Odyssey! Her unique blend of elegance and intensity promises an unforgettable performance. While details about her role are yet to be confirmed, whispers among fans suggest she might embody Athena, the divine embodiment of war and wisdom. This role would certainly fit given that Athena often accompanies Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, in his quest to locate Odysseus. The anticipated chemistry between them, fueled by both on-screen and off-screen connections, could make for a compelling narrative twist that truly brings the story to life.
In simpler terms, Zendaya’s portrayal of MJ in the Spider-Man trilogy significantly modernized the character for younger audiences. Her acting alongside Tom Holland served as an emotional foundation for these films. Outside of Marvel, she has earned two Emmys for her leading role in HBO’s Euphoria and is also recognized for her roles in Dune and its sequel, further solidifying her status as a prominent figure in science fiction.
2) Jon Bernthal
Marvel Role: Frank Castle/The Punisher, Daredevil, The Punisher
In the trailer for “The Odyssey”, Jon Bernthal makes a brief appearance, but it’s unmistakably him with his characteristic witty, soliloquizing demeanor. Known for his highly praised portrayal of Frank Castle in Marvel’s “The Punisher” series, Bernthal reprises his role in “Daredevil: Born Again”, now streaming on Disney+.
Apart from that, he’s given impressive performances in shows like “The Walking Dead,” “The Bear,” movies such as “Ford v Ferrari” and “King Richard.” Notably, he recently returned to the role of Brax Wolff, the complex and erratic brother of Christian in “The Accountant.
1) Tom Holland
Marvel Role: Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Captain America: Civil War through Spider-Man: No Way Home
At the forefront is Tom Holland portraying Telemachus, a man on a quest across the world to find his father, Odysseus. This role marks a significant shift for him, moving away from his familiar Spiderman persona, and could well be his most challenging performance so far.
Over six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Holland has embodied Spider-Man, earning a cherished spot among the franchise’s iconic figures. In “No Way Home”, his acting skills demonstrated depth and versatility – qualities that may have piqued the interest of Nolan.
In terms outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland has been featured in films like “The Crowded Room,” “Uncharted,” and “The Impossible.” His upcoming project, “The Odyssey,” may signal a significant career advancement as he delves into a challenging historical role filled with warfare, strategy, and deep emotional loss.
