Every Marvel Villain Who Used Super Soldier Serum, Ranked By Power

During World War II, the U.S. government tried to create super-soldiers to help win the war against the Axis Powers. This project, called Operation: Rebirth, was led by Dr. Erskine, who created a special serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. Sadly, Dr. Erskine was killed by a Nazi spy, taking the serum’s formula with him. However, both the U.S. and the Nazis continued to try and recreate it for decades afterward. This led to a dangerous competition, resulting in many unstable and powerful individuals who became supervillains – some even more powerful than Captain America.

The experimental serums inspired many test subjects to become heroes, much like Captain America – individuals like Union Jack and Black Widow rose to prominence. However, the serums also affected some negatively. Whether they were already inclined towards villainy or the serum itself had flaws, these individuals gained powerful abilities and became even more formidable threats.

10) Scourge

After Captain America went missing in the 1950s, the U.S. government attempted to create new heroes. They chose William Burnside to take on the role of Captain America and Jack Monroe to become the new Bucky. Burnside persuaded Monroe to try an experimental Super Soldier Serum, which boosted their strength but also caused mental instability. Years later, Monroe attacked the original Captain America. He briefly became a hero known as Nomad, but ultimately fell back into a life of crime. Manipulated by the villain Henry Gyrich, Monroe became the villain Scourge and attempted to kill the Thunderbolts, using a variety of weapons like guns and blades. Though he was eventually freed from the mind control, he was soon killed by Winter Soldier.

9) Johnny Nightmare

When the Punisher first encountered Jake Niman, they found they had similar backgrounds – both were veterans who’d lost their families to gang violence and were driven by revenge. Initially, the Punisher aided Jake, but he soon discovered the shocking truth: Jake, also known as ‘Johnny Nightmare,’ was the original target of the gang. They were hunting him for war crimes committed in Afghanistan, where he’d been enhanced by a Super Soldier Serum. His family was simply caught in the middle. This revelation caused Jake to fully embrace his ‘Johnny Nightmare’ persona and embark on a violent spree. This made him one of the Punisher’s most formidable opponents, able to withstand attacks from machine guns and rocket launchers with ease.

8) Protocide

Before Steve Rogers became Captain America, Clinton Mclntyre, known as Protocide, was one of the first people to try an early version of the Super Soldier Serum. While it made him even stronger and faster than Captain America, the serum also made him dangerously unstable and gave him a serious heart problem. After being put into a long sleep, Protocide was revived by the terrorist group A.I.M. They tricked him into thinking Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. were enemies and trained him to be their weapon. Armed with a shield as durable as Captain America’s, Protocide fought him multiple times as an equal, initially causing severe injuries and later battling him to a draw.

7) Grand Director

During the 1950s, after Captain America seemingly died when he froze in ice, the U.S. government attempted to create a replacement hero. They selected William Burnside, gave him plastic surgery to look like Captain America, and even legally changed his name to Steve Rogers. However, an experimental Super Soldier Serum drove Burnside insane, leading the government to put him into suspended animation. He eventually escaped and became a villain called the Grand Director, embracing Neo-Nazi ideology and fighting the original Captain America, who had been unfrozen. Despite being physically superior to Captain America, the Grand Director’s unstable mental state contributed to his defeat.

6) Taskmaster

Tony Masters, also known as Taskmaster, used to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. but now operates as a highly skilled mercenary in the Marvel Universe. His most famous ability is instantly copying the fighting style of anyone he observes. He was born with this talent, but enhanced it while at S.H.I.E.L.D. by injecting himself with a special serum originally developed by the Nazis. This serum didn’t make him stronger, but it dramatically boosted his reflexes and copying skills, allowing him to fight on equal footing with master martial artists like Captain America, Daredevil, Elektra, Iron Fist, and Shang-Chi.

5) Bushmaster

Luke Cage, also known as the Hero for Hire, developed incredible strength and invulnerability after being subjected to a dangerous, illegal experiment – one designed to recreate the effects of the Super Soldier Serum. While Luke Cage dedicated his powers to helping others, the crime boss John McIver, who went by the name Bushmaster, used his for evil. Originally without powers, Bushmaster forced the scientists behind the experiment to enhance him as well. The process worked, making Bushmaster as strong as Luke Cage, capable of lifting immense weight and breaking through solid steel. Bushmaster also had the ability to absorb energy to increase his power. However, the serum proved unstable, and ultimately led to his death, transforming him into a metallic statue.

4) Warrior Woman

During World War II, Julia Koenig was a Nazi spy who located and hypnotized an American scientist working on the Super Soldier Serum – the formula that gave Captain America his powers. After trying to recreate the serum herself, Julia transformed into the powerful Warrior Woman. Possessing the strength to lift 50 tons, she could easily overpower other super-powered individuals like U.S. Agent. As a dangerous Nazi supervillain with incredible strength and a deadly whip, she became a major threat to the Invaders, often fighting alongside another Nazi super soldier named Master Man.

3) Dr. Mindbubble

Unlike most versions of the Super Soldier Serum which focus on physical strength, the serum affected Horace Littleton, also known as Dr. Mindbubble, by dramatically increasing his mental powers. S.H.I.E.L.D. employed Littleton to replicate the serum, but he altered the formula, creating a version based on LSD. When S.H.I.E.L.D. stopped funding his research, Littleton experimented on himself, transforming into Dr. Mindbubble and seeking revenge. This unusual villain has a device implanted in his head that allows him to generate endless, unbreakable bubbles. These bubbles don’t trap bodies, but minds, immersing victims in incredibly realistic virtual realities where they experience their deepest desires. The only way to escape – before the bubbles become fatal – is to commit suicide within the virtual world.

2) Master Man

During World War II, the Nazis attempted to create their own super-soldiers, and Master Man was their greatest achievement. Like Captain America, Wilhelm Lohmer was a weak man who was physically transformed by an experimental serum. This gave him incredible strength and the ability to levitate using his mind. Now known as Master Man, he became a major threat to the Allied forces and a frequent enemy of the superhero team, the Invaders. He’s powerful enough to battle Namor and lift tanks, and can fly at speeds that even extinguish the flames of the Human Torch. Master Man remains one of Captain America’s most formidable adversaries.

1) The Void

Bob Reynolds’ life changed instantly. He went from being a meth addict breaking into a lab to a powerful, almost god-like being with the ability to either save or destroy everything. He accidentally took an experimental version of a super-soldier formula, thinking it was a drug, and gained incredible powers like super strength, speed, flight, and the ability to control matter. While he usually uses these powers as the hero known as the Sentry, the formula also created a dangerous alter ego called the Void. The Void is a purely evil personality with no concern for life and exists only to destroy everything. Unlike the Sentry, the Void uses its powers to cause chaos – plunging cities into darkness, severely injuring even powerful beings like the Hulk, and bringing terrifying creatures into existence.
