Currently, very little is known about Avengers: Doomsday, and honestly, many fans—including us—would prefer it stays that way. With so many trailers revealing major plot points these days, it’s refreshing that this film remains largely a secret. We do know the main characters thanks to the cast list, and snippets from post-credit scenes and teasers shown with Avatar: Fire and Ash have given us a basic idea of the story and overall feel of the movie. Here’s a rundown of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films you’ll want to watch before Doomsday arrives in December.
Let’s recap where we left off with recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. While Benedict Cumberbatch hasn’t been officially confirmed for the upcoming Doomsday film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the idea of incursions, which will probably play a role. It’s possible Multiverse of Madness could connect to Doomsday or even Avengers: Secret Wars, but we can’t be sure until Cumberbatch’s involvement is confirmed. Paul Rudd is returning for Doomsday, but his last movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, ended by focusing on Kang, not Doctor Doom, so that storyline doesn’t directly lead into it. As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it remains to be seen if it will connect to Doomsday, but it would be a great chance to have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man confront the memory of his mentor.
8) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

A post-credits scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings shows Katy, Shang-Chi, Wong, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner figuring out that the Ten Rings are sending a signal into space. It’s unclear who or what the signal is for, but this could be important in the upcoming Doomsday movie. While only Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) is confirmed to appear in Doomsday, Shang-Chi is a key character in the film, and Shang-Chi serves as his introduction, making it essential viewing.
7) Thor: Love and Thunder

The movie Thor: Love and Thunder concluded with Thor unexpectedly becoming a father to Gorr the God Butcher’s daughter, Love, who is played by Chris Hemsworth’s actual daughter, India Rose Hemsworth. A recent preview revealed that Love will be a key reason why Thor joins the battle against Doctor Doom, so viewers will need to watch this somewhat uneven Marvel film to understand how he took on the role of dad.
6) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Okay, so this is really important if you’re planning to see Doomsday. You need to watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever first. It explains everything about how Shuri takes on the mantle of Black Panther, and it introduces Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta. Their scenes together are going to be packed with tension, and you won’t understand why unless you’ve seen Wakanda Forever.
5) The Marvels

The post-credits scene in The Marvels is a bit confusing. Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) finds herself in a hospital room next to a woman she believes is her mother, but it’s actually a version of her mom, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), from another universe – and she’s using her superhero identity, Binary. We also get a quick glimpse of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) from the X-Men. Here’s where it gets tricky: Grammer is confirmed to be in the upcoming Doomsday movie, but neither Parris nor Lynch are currently slated to appear. This could mean The Marvels won’t directly lead into Doomsday, or it’s just that their involvement hasn’t been revealed yet.
4) Deadpool & Wolverine

It’s still unclear if Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, or Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will appear in the movie Doomsday. Since other X-Men characters are included, many fans expect them to be there. However, you’ll definitely need to watch Deadpool & Wolverine to see Channing Tatum as Gambit, as he’s set to be in the next Avengers film.
3) Captain America: Brave New World

The upcoming movie Captain America: Brave New World might seem a little confusing since both Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie are returning as Captain America. However, it’s essential viewing because it officially introduces Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Captain America and shows his friend, Joaquin Torres (played by Danny Ramirez), taking on the mantle of the Falcon. This film, along with the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, sets up this new dynamic.
2) Thunderbolts*

The movie Thunderbolts serves as a good reintroduction to some lesser-known Marvel characters, all of whom (except Taskmaster) will appear in Doomsday. While watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Ant-Man and the Wasp will give you a more complete backstory, Thunderbolts is one of the most important movies to see before Doomsday. You’ll need to know they previously operated as the New Avengers, as they’re referred to as such in Doomsday. Plus, without seeing Thunderbolts, it won’t make sense why they’re at the former Avengers Tower when they see the Fantastic Four’s ship heading towards Earth-616 – assuming that scene makes it into the final cut of Doomsday.
1) The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The newest film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, is essential viewing before Doomsday. The Fantastic Four will clearly play a significant role in the upcoming Avengers movie, so it’s important to know their current versions as introduced in this film. Plus, the fact that they come from a different universe will likely be referenced in Doomsday. And don’t forget the post-credits scene, which introduces Doctor Doom – you at least get a glimpse of him!
