Every Member of the Scarlet Witch’s New Council, Explained

It’s not unusual to see Marvel characters team up to quietly support one another, but it’s always thrilling when it happens. It’s particularly interesting when the group helping out includes some of Marvel’s most powerful heroes.

In the first issue of Sorcerer Supreme (from Steve Orlando, Bernard Chang, Ruth Redmond, and Cory Petit), we see the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, assembling a support system to help her adjust to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme. It’s fitting that she’d turn to another former Avenger who understands the responsibilities of such a powerful role for guidance.

Clea is the Perfect Advisor for Marvel’s New Sorcerer Supreme

Clea first appeared in the 1964 comic Strange Tales #126, in a story called “The Domain of the Dread Dormammu!” She’s the daughter of Prince Orini from the Dark Dimension and Umar, who is Dormammu’s sister. Clea possesses incredible power, though she didn’t always use it to fight her enemies.

Clea was often seen as someone who needed rescuing, but that changed when she came to Earth with Stephen Strange and started actively fighting evil. Over the years, she’s become known as one of the most powerful magic-users of her time, and she remains a formidable force even now.

I was so excited when Clea became the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth! It was a huge moment – she was already a Sorcerer Supreme in the Dark Dimension, so she became the first person ever to hold the title in two dimensions at once! While she didn’t stay Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme for a super long time, it was honestly one of the coolest things to happen in the Marvel Universe, and a chapter I always love going back to.

Speed and Wiccan are the Scarlet Witch’s Ultimate Confidants

The story of Billy and Tommy Maximoff is one of Marvel Comics’ most heartbreaking, and it’s easy to see why. Over 40 years ago, the Scarlet Witch and Vision unexpectedly found happiness in a quiet suburban life and discovered the joy of raising twin sons they hadn’t known they desperately wanted.

Those children weren’t truly real; they were essentially created by Wanda’s immense and mysterious powers, and destined to fade away. However, almost twenty years later, Billy and Tommy unexpectedly reappeared in…

Both Wiccan and Speed have become heroes in their own right, and Wiccan especially shares many similarities with his mother. Given their close bond and family connection, it’s natural that Wanda would turn to her sons for advice when she’s struggling.

Somnus Deserves Every Ounce of Respect the Scarlet Witch Gives Him

In the 2021 Marvel Voices: Pride #1 comic, specifically the story “Man of His Dreams” by Steve Orlando, Claudia Aguirre, and Luciano Vecchio, readers were introduced to a character who fell in love with Akihiro, Wolverine’s son, in the 1960s. However, because of the character’s power to control dreams and the resulting vision of a blissful future, Akihiro abruptly left, seemingly ending the relationship.

Carl lived a normal life and eventually passed away from old age, but he was unexpectedly brought back to life on Krakoa through a special resurrection process. Embracing a new beginning, he became known as Somnus and rapidly demonstrated his incredible ability to manipulate the world of dreams.

Though not the strongest of the Scarlet Witch’s advisors, Somnus has a special gift for uncovering the truth. He can see through almost any deception, and this ability is exactly what the new Sorcerer Supreme needs to succeed.

Amaranth is Marvel Comics’ Next Mystic Powerhouse

Amaranth is a powerful member of the Scarlet Witch’s inner circle. She first appeared briefly in a few comics before being fully introduced in Scarlet Witch #6 (2024), written by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Lorenzo Tammetta. However, her true power wasn’t fully understood until some time after that initial appearance.

Amaranth was born into a unique situation – a cosmic agreement meant to bring peace between two powerful, ancient beings. She arrived on Earth via the Witch’s Road, and was raised by a kind family who had no idea about her extraordinary origins.

Agatha Harkness eventually discovered Amaranth and sent her to the Scarlet Witch for guidance and training. With Wanda’s help, Amaranth came to understand her full potential, both in terms of her powers and her destiny, and she’s been dedicated to fulfilling that legacy ever since.

Chthon is Everything the Marvel Universe is Afraid Of — Even Wanda Maximoff

Chthon, the creator of the Darkhold, avoided the Demogorge’s fury and was then revered by some of the first humans on Earth. He’s witnessed countless cults rise and fall, all dedicated to him, but has never actually achieved the powerful rule he desires.

First appearing in the 1975 Marvel story “Magic is Alive!”, Chthon quickly became one of the most frightening villains in Marvel Comics. This incredibly powerful being has rarely been defeated, but his recent loss to the Scarlet Witch was particularly significant.

In a stunning recent development, Wanda Maximoff absorbed the power of an ancient god into herself, effectively imprisoning it with no escape possible for either of them. Combined with her already immense abilities, this makes the Scarlet Witch a strong contender for the title of Sorcerer Supreme, but also raises the terrifying possibility of her becoming the most dangerous iteration of the character ever seen.

Sorcerer Supreme #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
