Every Missed Opportunity for the Avengers to Beat Thanos

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) epic storyline, the Infinity Saga, culminated in the Avengers defeating Thanos. However, the heroes had opportunities to stop him much earlier. From the beginning, the MCU built towards Thanos as its primary villain, whose goal was to collect the Infinity Stones and wipe out half of all life to reshape the universe. While the two final movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, initially showed Thanos winning before the Avengers ultimately reversed his actions and defeated him, things could have played out differently.

The Avengers movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe contained several missed chances for the heroes to defeat Thanos. With a bit more foresight or good fortune, the Avengers likely could have prevented Thanos’s victory in Infinity War. Even though Doctor Strange believed there was only one path to success, different choices earlier on could have resulted in a much better outcome.

6) All the Avengers & Guardians Facing Thanos On Earth

While the final act of Avengers: Infinity War features some incredible scenes, Thanos probably wouldn’t have won if all the heroes had fought him together. Instead of splitting up – with some battling him on Titan and others in Wakanda – they likely could have defeated him and prevented him from collecting all six Infinity Stones if they’d united their forces.

5) Aiming For The Head

One of Thor’s most powerful moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is when he directly confronts Thanos. Interestingly, Thanos points out Thor could have defeated him right then and there. When Thor arrives at the Battle of Wakanda and strikes Thanos with Stormbreaker, he hits his chest. Thanos immediately tells him he should have aimed for the head. If Thor had, he likely would have killed Thanos instantly, stopping him from using the Infinity Stones.

4) Calling In The Eternals

As a fan, I always wondered what could have happened if the Eternals had joined the fight against Thanos! It’s amazing to think they were already on Earth the whole time, and even Thor knew about them. The movie really showed how powerful they are, and I honestly believe if the Avengers had just asked for their help, things could have gone so differently. Imagine the combined might of the Eternals and the Avengers – Thanos wouldn’t have stood a chance! It’s a bit frustrating to think about, but it definitely makes you wonder ‘what if?’

3) Destroying The Infinity Gauntlet

While it seems like a basic solution, destroying Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet before he collected all the Infinity Stones would have likely worked. The Gauntlet, reportedly made of gold and forged in a dying star, would have been hard to destroy completely. But even melting or seriously damaging it could have bought the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe enough time to defeat him.

2) Using The Time Stone To Rapidly Age Thanos To Death

A major moment in Avengers: Infinity War involved Thanos taking the Time Stone from Doctor Strange. Strange could have potentially used the Stone’s power to quickly age Thanos while he still had it. He’d already shown he could manipulate time with an object – like an apple – seemingly without effort, so it’s likely he could have done the same to Thanos. While it would have been a grim fate for Thanos, acting faster could have saved countless lives.

1) Star-Lord Keeping His Emotions In Check

Many fans criticized Star-Lord’s behavior in Avengers: Infinity War, believing it contributed to Thanos’s win. The Avengers and Guardians had Thanos restrained and were trying to take the Infinity Gauntlet from him when Star-Lord impulsively attacked. This disrupted Mantis’s focus, letting Thanos escape. If Star-Lord had kept his emotions in check, the heroes might have been able to stop Thanos before he collected all six Infinity Stones.
