Every Movie in This Hunger Games Replacement Franchise Is About To Leave Netflix

During the 2010s, young adult (YA) book series adaptations were incredibly popular in film, and The Hunger Games was at the forefront. The movies, based on Suzanne Collins’ books, were huge hits with audiences, defined the decade’s cultural trends, and launched a boom in dystopian YA stories. Many other films tried to follow in The Hunger Games’ footsteps, including one that earned nearly $950 million and is soon leaving Netflix.

Netflix users have only one week left to watch all three movies in The Maze Runner series. Based on James Dashner’s popular novels, the films—which debuted in 2014—are set in a future after a global disaster and star Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, a teenager stuck in a complicated and constantly shifting maze. The Maze Runner, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure will no longer be available on Netflix after January 9th.

The Maze Runner Is One of the Best YA Dystopian Franchises

When The Maze Runner came out, it looked poised to take over from The Hunger Games. Like those films, it was based on a hit young adult book series and featured young characters fighting against a powerful, controlling force in a futuristic world. While The Maze Runner appealed to many of the same fans, it didn’t achieve the same level of cultural phenomenon. Despite doing well at the box office, the series is often considered underrated, even though it’s actually quite good.

I was immediately hooked by the story’s central idea, and the first movie throws you right into the Glade just as confused as the main character, Thomas. It’s amazing because you get to figure out the mystery with them, and the thrills are genuinely heart-stopping! What I really appreciated was how much darker and more intense the films became with each sequel, really raising the stakes. Plus, the world they built was incredible – it started with the maze, but then expanded to these really detailed, post-apocalyptic cities. The sets and special effects were fantastic and truly brought it all to life.

Although the series didn’t gain as much attention as other popular young adult franchises at the time, it’s getting another chance to shine. 20th Century Studios announced in May 2024 that they’re creating a new movie with the original author returning as a producer. Details are still limited, but this new film won’t be a remake or a direct sequel – instead, it will continue the story and include familiar elements from the first movie.

Where to Stream The Maze Runner Franchise After It Leaves Netflix?

The Maze Runner movies are becoming harder to find as streaming options change. After January 9th, only one of the three films will be available on streaming services. While the first Maze Runner movie is now on Peacock as of January 1st, the sequels, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure, aren’t currently available on any streaming platform besides Netflix.
