Over the past 28 years, the One Piece manga has evolved from a lighthearted adventure into a complex story linking current events with a forgotten past. It began with Luffy, a 17-year-old aiming to become the Pirate King and assemble a dependable crew. He’s since succeeded in gathering highly skilled individuals for every role a pirate ship needs. The Straw Hat Pirates have remained a steadfast team through all their challenges.
Luffy’s crewmates aren’t just dependable partners who help him achieve his ambitions; they each have personal dreams they’re striving for too. Luffy has a knack for recognizing good people, which is why he knew he needed them by his side. While some, like Robin and Brook, joined willingly, convincing others to join his crew took a lot of effort.
9) Zoro Was Blackmailed into Becoming a Pirate

Zoro was the very first member Luffy added to his crew, and the circumstances were incredibly chaotic. Though Zoro worked as a bounty hunter and didn’t originally want to be a pirate, he was forced into it. He was about to be unfairly executed by the Marines when Luffy stepped in to save him. To Zoro’s surprise, Luffy was the only crew member at that time! Despite this, Zoro quickly adapted to pirate life and became Luffy’s most reliable and trusted ally.
8) Usopp Always Wanted to Become Like His Father

Luffy and Usopp quickly became friends when they met in Syrup Village, as Usopp turned out to be the son of Yasopp, a sniper from the Red Hair Pirates crew. Soon after, the village came under attack by a former pirate, bringing Luffy and Usopp together to defend it. Once the battle ended, Luffy acquired a wonderful ship, ready to begin his journey. Usopp felt both happy and sad to see his new friends preparing to sail away, until Luffy surprisingly invited him to join them!
7) Sanji Couldn’t Keep Refusing Luffy

Similar to Zoro, Sanji wasn’t initially eager to join Luffy’s crew, but his reluctance stemmed from his deep connection to Zeff, the man who saved his life and acted as a father figure. Sanji always felt grateful for everything Zeff had done. However, Zeff, having raised Sanji since childhood, understood that Sanji had his own ambitions. After defeating Don Krieg’s crew, Zeff and the other Baratie chefs encouraged Sanji to pursue his dreams and forge his own path.
6) Nami Becomes the Official Straw Hat’s Navigator After Being Free

Nami first appeared alongside Luffy and Zoro in the Orange Town Arc, but she didn’t officially join the Straw Hat Pirates as their navigator until the end of the Arlong Park Arc. She initially stole the Going Merry and returned home, where her heartbreaking past was revealed as Luffy and the others worked together to protect her village. Having shouldered a heavy responsibility from a young age, Nami was worn down and, with her last bit of energy, pleaded for Luffy’s assistance. After Arlong was defeated, she eagerly continued her adventure with the crew, driven by the dream of one day completing a world map.
5) Luffy Didn’t Recruit Chopper For His Skills

Luffy first encountered Chopper on Drum Island and, mistaking him for food, chased him around a castle with Sanji. They quickly realized their mistake, and Luffy grew fond of the timid and cute reindeer. After they dealt with a dangerous problem caused by the island’s former king, Chopper was encouraged by a doctor named Kureha to join Luffy’s crew. Interestingly, Luffy didn’t realize Chopper was a doctor himself throughout the whole process of trying to get him to join!
4) Robin Invited Herself to Join The Crew

Robin is unique among the Straw Hat Pirates because she proactively asked to join the crew, a choice that ultimately changed her life for the better. She initially helped Luffy while working for Crocodile, and he later returned the favor. After her organization, Baroque Works, fell apart, Robin had nowhere to go and tentatively joined the crew. Eventually, she fully embraced them as her family and became a permanent member after the events at Enies Lobby.
3) Franky Was Forced to Leave Water 7

Franky didn’t make a great first impression on Luffy’s crew – he defeated Usopp and his friends and even stole their money. But during the dangerous mission to rescue Robin at Enies Lobby, Franky proved himself a loyal ally. His past involvement with pirates and clashes with the World Government naturally led to him being wanted by the authorities. Even with encouragement from the Straw Hats and his Franky Family, it took a lot of convincing for him to leave his home and follow his dreams.
2) Luffy Accomplished His Wish By Recruiting Brook

Most people would be terrified to meet a living, talking skeleton, but Luffy is different. He was immediately intrigued by Brook and eagerly invited him to join his pirate crew, shocking his friends. Brook happily accepted, but didn’t officially become a crewmate until after they defeated Gecko Moria, allowing Brook to reclaim his shadow and finally walk in the sunlight.
1) Jinbe Came to Save The Day in Wano

I always noticed how much Luffy appreciated what Jinbe did for him at Marineford, so it wasn’t surprising to see him immediately seek Jinbe out when they reached Fish-Man Island. Luffy offered him a spot on the crew, but Jinbe had a lot on his plate at the time. They reconnected during the Whole Cake Island arc, and Jinbe really came through, helping Luffy and the others escape. Luffy made him promise to stay alive and find him in Wano. True to his word, Jinbe arrived in Wano just before the raid on Onigashima and was a lifesaver for the Straw Hats and their allies.
