Similar to other anime series that have been on the air for a long time, One Piece’s impressive length comes from both its many episodes and its numerous movies. One Piece has consistently released new films since the beginning, and currently boasts a total of 15 different movies.
The One Piece movies aren’t all created equal – they differ in length, story, and how good they are. Some are fantastic, while others aren’t worth remembering. While what makes a ‘good’ movie is a matter of opinion, it’s generally pretty clear which One Piece films are the best ones to watch.
15) One Piece: The Giant Mecha Soldier Of Karakuri Castle (2006)

Released in 2006, One Piece: The Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle is the seventh One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates travel to the incredible mechanical island in search of treasure, but their adventure leads to a clash with Ratchet, the ruthless leader of the island, who dreams of world domination.
Okay, let me tell you, Karakuri Castle is just…rough. It’s not just that it relies way too heavily on fanservice, but the story is incredibly weak, and the villain? Forgettable. But the biggest problem for me is how they portrayed Luffy – he comes across as completely selfish and honestly, unlikeable. I really struggled to find anything to enjoy about this movie, and in my opinion, it’s easily the worst One Piece film out there. Seriously, avoid it if you can.
14) One Piece Movie: The Desert Princess And The Pirates: Adventures In Alabasta (2007)

The 2007 movie One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta is the eighth One Piece film. It retells the Alabasta story arc from the series, mainly focusing on the fight between the Straw Hat Pirates and Baroque Works. Characters like Ace and the Marines have smaller roles or don’t appear at all.
Compilation films are frequent in anime, and Adventures in Alabasta unfortunately falls into the trap of being a poor one. It’s too short and leaves out vital parts of the story, making it hard to care about what’s happening. While it’s notable as the first One Piece project dubbed by Funimation, it doesn’t offer much beyond that historical fact.
13) One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure (2001)

Released in 2001, One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure is the second One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates find themselves in trouble when their ship and supplies are stolen. Their attempt to recover them leads to a clash with the formidable Trump Pirates, who have taken over the idyllic Clockwork Island and are exploiting its people.
Clockwork Island Adventure feels like a classic One Piece story, and the animation still holds up well considering its age. However, while charming, the plot is quite straightforward, preventing it from ranking among the best One Piece films.
12) One Piece (2000)

The first One Piece movie came out in 2000 and was also titled One Piece. The Straw Hat Pirates are running low on money, so they set out to find the treasure of the famous pirate Woonan. However, they quickly find themselves in a competition with the dangerous Eldoraggo Pirates to claim it.
Similar to Clockwork Island Adventure, the first One Piece movie isn’t particularly strong in terms of plot or villains. However, the story involving Woonan and his connection to the crew is surprisingly touching, making the movie enjoyable throughout.
11) One Piece: Chopper’s Kingdom On The Island Of Strange Animals (2002)

Released in 2002, One Piece: Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals is the third One Piece movie and focuses on the character Chopper. The Straw Hat crew arrives on an island inhabited by talking animals, and Chopper unexpectedly becomes their king. He must then rise to the occasion and defend them from a dangerous poacher who is after their valuable treasure.
Whether you’ll enjoy The Island of Strange Animals really comes down to how much you like seeing Chopper as the central focus. However, despite that, it’s a surprisingly good One Piece movie – the action is strong and the story is actually quite engaging, especially considering how old it is.
10) One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase (2011)

Released in 2011, One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase is the eleventh One Piece movie. The story begins when a bird steals Luffy’s beloved hat, leading the Straw Hat Pirates on a wild chase to retrieve it. This chase quickly turns into a conflict with the Marines and uncovers a surprisingly sad backstory.
At just thirty minutes long, One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase feels more like an extended TV episode than a full movie, so it’s relatively light on content. Despite this, it’s an enjoyable short film thanks to its engaging story and surprisingly well-done 3D animation, making it worth a watch for fans.
9) One Piece: Episode Of Chopper Plus: Bloom In The Winter, Miracle Sakura (2008)

The 2008 film One Piece: Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura is the ninth One Piece movie. It revisits the story of the Drum Kingdom, but isn’t just a shortened version. Instead, it reimagines the arc, placing it after the events of Enies Lobby and adding a new storyline involving Wapol’s brother, Musshuru.
Compared to Adventures in Alabasta, the story behind Episode of Chopper is concise enough to be adapted into a movie. Combined with some interesting changes to the plot, it actually tells a surprisingly strong story. Plus, with its excellent animation and beautiful visuals, Episode of Chopper offers a really compelling alternative way to experience Chopper’s introduction.
8) One Piece: The Cursed Holy Sword (2004)

Released in 2004, One Piece: The Cursed Holy Sword is the fifth One Piece movie. The Straw Hat pirates land on Asuka Island and are asked to lock away the Shichiseiken, a powerful magical sword that could bring darkness to the world. The situation becomes more difficult when Zoro unexpectedly departs to assist the sword’s owner, Saga.
Beyond its exciting action sequences and impressive animation – particularly during Luffy’s battle with Saga – The Cursed Holy Sword truly shines through its heartfelt story and the surprisingly nuanced portrayal of Zoro. This One Piece movie was a step up in terms of production quality, and it really shows.
7) One Piece: Dead End Adventure (2003)

Released in 2003, One Piece: Dead End Adventure is the fourth One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates join the dangerous Dead End Race, a ship race with a huge cash prize. However, what starts as a competition turns into a conflict when they become entangled with the villain Gasparde and the bounty hunter Shuraiya.
One Piece: Dead End Adventure was the first full-length One Piece movie, unlike the earlier films which were shown as double features. This is noticeable in the significantly improved animation and artwork. Combined with a compelling story featuring the character Shuraiya, Dead End Adventure remains enjoyable even today, over two decades after its release.
6) One Piece Film: Z (2012)

Released in 2012, One Piece Film: Z is the twelfth movie in the One Piece series and the second to feature direct involvement from creator Eiichiro Oda. Just as the Straw Hat Pirates reach the dangerous New World, they encounter Zephyr, a retired Marine Admiral, who is leading a team of former soldiers in a scheme to destroy the world.
Thanks to beautiful animation by acclaimed director Tatsuya Nagamine and a compelling villain named Zephyr, One Piece Film: Z is considered one of the best One Piece movies made recently. However, the film doesn’t give its villains enough screen time, which prevents it from being truly exceptional.
5) One Piece: Stampede (2019)

Released in 2019, One Piece: Stampede is the fourteenth One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates team up with many other pirates to search for a hidden treasure left by Gol D. Roger. However, the treasure hunt is a trap set by Douglas Bullet, Roger’s old protégé, who plans to eliminate all of Luffy’s fellow pirates.
While One Piece: Stampede focuses more on impressive visuals and action than a deep story, it’s still a very enjoyable film. The action sequences are fantastic, and it’s a lot of fun to see beloved characters return. Created to celebrate One Piece‘s 20th anniversary, Stampede definitely delivers on that promise.
4) One Piece Film: Strong World (2009)

Released in 2009, One Piece Film: Strong World is the tenth One Piece movie and the first one directly overseen by the series creator, Eiichiro Oda. The Straw Hat Pirates find themselves on a mysterious floating island filled with dangerous creatures, and they must foil a villain’s plan to wipe out the East Blue.
Shiki is a compelling villain, even for those unfamiliar with the original story, and combined with fantastic animation and a heartwarming story about the Straw Hats’ bond, Strong World is a truly enjoyable movie. It essentially defined what One Piece films could be, and remains one of the very best to date.
3) One Piece Film: Gold (2016)

Released in 2016, One Piece Film: Gold is the thirteenth One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates find themselves deeply in debt after being lured to a gigantic casino owned by Gild Tesoro. To clear their debts and stop Tesoro’s criminal activities, they must join forces with one of Nami’s former rivals and pull off an ambitious heist.
Though Gold isn’t as large in scope as some recent One Piece films, it succeeds as a fun, summer blockbuster thanks to its exciting action and clever use of heist movie elements. The film also features surprisingly well-developed new characters, making it better than many realize.
2) One Piece: Baron Omatsuri And The Secret Island (2005)

Released in 2005, One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island is the sixth One Piece movie. The Straw Hat Pirates head to Omatsuri Island hoping for a peaceful vacation, but their trip quickly goes wrong when disagreements break out amongst the crew and they uncover a terrifying plot.
Though it’s the most visually unsettling and breaks from the usual One Piece style, Baron Omatsuri is a surprisingly meaningful story. It uses its darkness to actually highlight what makes One Piece so positive and enjoyable, giving it a lasting impact that fans still appreciate two decades later.
1) One Piece Film: Red (2022)

Released in 2022, One Piece Film: Red is the fifteenth movie in the popular One Piece series. The film follows Luffy and his crew as they reconnect with Uta, a globally famous singer who also happens to be the daughter of Shanks. However, they quickly discover that Uta’s goals aren’t what they seem and may pose a threat to both Luffy’s friends and the world.
Red boasts not only the best animation of any One Piece film, but also some of the most moving storytelling, particularly in Uta’s storyline. It’s easily one of the greatest anime movies ever made, and that makes it the definitive One Piece movie.
