Every Original Avenger Actor Officially Confirmed for Doomsday & Which Ones Are Still Missing

With the release of Avengers: Doomsday less than a year away, fans are eager to know which original Avengers cast members will be returning. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has introduced many new heroes in Phases 4, 5, and 6, the story of Doomsday will heavily feature some familiar faces. Several actors from the 2012 film The Avengers will appear in the upcoming fifth Avengers movie, though not everyone will be playing the same role as before.

Avengers: Doomsday kicks off the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga, leading into the story’s conclusion in Avengers: Secret Wars. The movie will unite heroes like the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, as they face the powerful villain Doctor Doom, who is causing chaos across the multiverse. While many details are still secret, some familiar actors are confirmed to return before the film arrives on December 18, 2026.

6) Confirmed: Robert Downey Jr… As Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. first became famous as Tony Stark, the original hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He launched the MCU with the 2008 film Iron Man and continued playing the role through 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Stark’s heroic sacrifice defeated Thanos, bringing his story to a close. But Downey Jr. isn’t leaving the Marvel world – he’s now set to play the iconic villain Doctor Doom.

At Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2024, Robert Downey Jr. surprised fans by announcing he’ll be playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Many questions remain about his character, including whether Doctor Doom is connected to his previous role as Tony Stark. Marvel is keeping the details under wraps, so fans will likely have to wait until the movie comes out to learn more about Doctor Doom’s background.

5) Missing: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m always curious about who’s coming back for future films! Right now, it’s still unclear if Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Black Widow in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. She first joined the MCU as Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2 and quickly became a core member of the Avengers. Of course, her character seemingly sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame, but we did get a fantastic prequel with Black Widow in 2021. While there’s no indication she’ll be back, a lot of us are hoping for some kind of appearance in Avengers: Doomsday – you never know in the Marvel universe!

4) Confirmed: Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Fans have been anticipating Chris Hemsworth’s return as Thor in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday because he’s one of the original Avengers still involved in Marvel movies. Thor was last seen in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, where he set off on new adventures with his adopted daughter.

Chris Hemsworth will be back as Thor, confirmed in March 2025. The announcement of the new film’s cast was unique – they revealed the actors’ names by displaying personalized chairs. Fans are thrilled about Hemsworth’s return, but some are hoping for a darker, more intense portrayal of Thor, similar to his performance in Avengers: Infinity War.

3) Missing: Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk

Mark Ruffalo has been playing Bruce Banner/The Hulk in Marvel movies since 2012’s The Avengers. While his return hasn’t been officially announced, he most recently appeared as Professor Hulk in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This form of the Hulk was developed after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Okay, so I just heard that Mark Ruffalo is coming back for the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, which is awesome! The big question, though, is what kind of Hulk we’re going to see. It’s all a bit of a mystery, and honestly, it might be why Marvel hasn’t officially announced him for Avengers: Doomsday yet. Brand New Day comes out July 31, 2026, so they’ve got plenty of time to figure things out and confirm his return before Doomsday hits theaters.

2) Confirmed: Chris Evans as Steve Rogers

The initial trailer for Avengers: Doomsday confirmed Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. While Evans first played Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger, he hasn’t portrayed Steve Rogers since Endgame. The trailer, which debuted with Avatar: Fire and Ash, features Steve Rogers at home, holding a baby that hasn’t been seen before.

While not officially confirmed, many believe this is Steve Rogers after his time travel adventure in Endgame. After returning the Infinity Stones, he lived a full life with Peggy Carter, and the elderly man we see at the end of the film is him. A future story could involve Doctor Doom attacking this version of Steve Rogers, potentially starting the next chapter for the Avengers.

1) Missing: Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner first played Hawkeye in the 2011 film Thor. While he had his own Disney+ show, it’s uncertain if he’ll be back for Avengers: Doomsday. Renner has mentioned the possibility of a second season of Hawkeye on several occasions, but there haven’t been any official announcements. Although his character is still alive, his relatively minor part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could mean he won’t appear in Doomsday.
