Every Original Brotherhood of Mutants Villain Ranked By Power

Professor X founded the X-Men with the idea that humans and mutants could coexist peacefully. However, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants arose as a direct opposition to this vision. While the Brotherhood has gone through many different lineups since its debut in 1964, the original group was started by Magneto. Driven by a lifetime of suffering – as a Jewish person during the Holocaust and as a mutant facing current-day prejudice – Magneto believed humans were incapable of change. He formed the Brotherhood to champion mutant dominance and fight back against human bigotry with force.

The X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, despite being rivals, share a common goal: fighting for the rights of mutants in a world that often fears and despises them. While the X-Men believe in achieving progress through peaceful means, the Brotherhood resorts to violence. The original members of the Brotherhood were particularly powerful, inspiring many other mutants to fight back against humanity.

5) Toad

Mortimer Tonynbee, better known as Toad, has played many roles within the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, sometimes following orders and other times leading them. True to his name, he has all the abilities of a toad – he can jump incredibly far, climb walls, and use his long, stretchy tongue – which can reach up to 30 feet – to grab or throw opponents. He also has other unpleasant powers, like spitting a substance that can paralyze people, releasing chemicals that can briefly control minds, and even controlling other amphibians with his thoughts. Though he’s not the most powerful member of the Brotherhood, Toad is definitely one of the most dependable, frequently appearing, and frankly, most repulsive.

4) Mastermind

Jason Wyngarde, known as Mastermind, has been a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Hellfire Club for years. His mutant power lets him create incredibly realistic illusions, fooling all five senses of anyone he targets. He can even manipulate memories, as he once made Polaris forget she was Magneto’s daughter and convinced Wolverine his mother was alive again. Perhaps his most famous – though ultimately unsuccessful – scheme involved using his illusions to brainwash Jean Grey into joining the Hellfire Club, which unexpectedly led to her transformation into the dangerous Dark Phoenix.

3) Quicksilver

Okay, so as a huge Marvel fan, let me tell you about Quicksilver – Pietro Maximoff. This guy is seriously fast, like one of the fastest characters in the whole universe! He started out with the bad guys, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, alongside his twin sister, Scarlet Witch, but they eventually wanted to be heroes and joined the Avengers. His speed is insane – we’re talking way faster than the speed of sound. It’s not just about running, either. He can create tornadoes, run on water, even climb walls just by moving so quickly! There was one time he literally ran halfway around the world in under two minutes! And get this – if he really pushes it, he can even outrun light, like when he beat a radio wave in a race! Honestly, whether he’s fighting for good or being a villain, Quicksilver is a blur – his enemies never even see him coming. He’s just that fast.

2) Magneto

Magneto, originally known as Max Eisenhardt, formed the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as a rival to Professor X and his X-Men. He’s consistently shown to be one of the most powerful mutants, and his control over magnetism has only grown stronger over time. As an exceptionally powerful Omega-Level mutant, Magneto’s abilities with electromagnetism are nearly limitless. He’s demonstrated this power by feats like removing Wolverine’s metal bones, causing a stroke in Phoenix, deflecting Thor’s hammer, and unleashing electromagnetic pulses that affected the entire planet. He’s even capable of wiping out all life on Earth by eliminating the planet’s magnetic field. Though driven by a desire to liberate mutants from oppression, his often-violent approach has resulted in many deaths.

1) Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, is one of the most powerful beings in the entire Marvel Multiverse and has repeatedly put all of existence at risk. While her early powers – casting minor hexes and bad luck – were limited when she was part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, she later unlocked immense chaos magic. This allowed her to manipulate minds, time, space, and reality with incredible ease. She’s proven herself capable of facing forces like the Phoenix Force, completely reshaping reality in the House of M storyline, and even stripping nearly all mutants of their powers. At her most unstable, she’s threatened to unravel the entire infinite multiverse. This progression has made Scarlet Witch one of Marvel’s most impressive and frightening characters.
