The Justice League first came together in DC Comics to fight a villain so powerful that no single hero could handle it. This was significant because the team included DC’s strongest characters, like Superman and Martian Manhunter. While the team’s history has been revised a few times, with changes to its origins and members, the original lineup first united to defeat Starro, based on the comic book’s original release date.
This team’s heroes were largely inspired by Greek Gods, and understanding that connection explained why they ranked among DC Comics’ most formidable characters.
7) Batman
Batman is unique among the original Justice League members because he doesn’t have any superpowers, which some might see as a weakness. But this is actually his greatest strength. While others rely on their powers, Batman is a master strategist and tactician, always prepared with a plan to defeat any opponent, no matter how strong.
Batman’s victory over Superman demonstrates his ability to overcome challenges with clever planning and adaptability. Despite this, he’s unique in the Justice League for having no superpowers, which leaves him susceptible to stronger opponents. Ultimately, even with his impressive fighting skills and ingenuity, he remains the team’s most vulnerable member.
6) Aquaman
Aquaman is a powerful hero and one of the strongest members of the Justice League, capable of going toe-to-toe with even Superman and Wonder Woman. But his powers aren’t constant – he needs to be in water to reach his full potential. The longer he’s on land, the weaker he gets.
Although Aquaman is a powerful member of the Justice League and can defeat almost any opponent in a direct fight, his abilities aren’t as useful in most situations. This key weakness ultimately places him lower in terms of overall power compared to other original League members with superpowers.
5) Green Lantern
Green Lantern is essentially a cosmic law enforcer who wields a ring with incredible power – it can create anything he envisions. As a key member of the Green Lantern Corps, he possesses an unwavering determination. He often takes the lead and his ring can rescue the team from almost any danger, functioning as a potent weapon against nearly any threat, except those that are yellow.
As a movie fan, I’ve always found Green Lantern interesting. He’s powerful, sure, getting his abilities from his ring and being a really skilled fighter. We definitely see just how dangerous he can be when he really lets go, like when he was Parallax – he doesn’t hold back at all! But honestly, when you stack him up against the original Justice League members, he’s still pretty much a regular human, which puts him towards the lower end of their power scale.
4) Martian Manhunter
Martian Manhunter is an incredibly powerful hero in DC Comics. He was so strong, possessing abilities similar to Superman like super strength, speed, and invulnerability, and even more powers on top of that, that DC temporarily stopped using him in stories to give other heroes a chance to shine. Essentially, he was too powerful compared to the rest.
Martian Manhunter is a DC hero with incredible mental abilities. He can read minds, change memories, and even control people’s actions with just a thought. He’s also a master of disguise, able to shapeshift into anyone. Despite his power, he isn’t quite as strong as some of DC’s most powerful heroes—including three members of his original Justice League team.
3) Wonder Woman
As a longtime fan, it was a little frustrating to see how Wonder Woman was initially treated when the Justice League first came together. Back then, most of the writers were men, and they often didn’t portray female heroes as equals to the men. Diana was incredibly powerful – a skilled Amazon warrior who could take on anyone – but the early comics actually had her acting like the team’s secretary! It didn’t really show how amazing she truly was.
After overcoming an initially demeaning portrayal, Wonder Woman consistently demonstrated she was a force to be reckoned with, rivaling anyone in her group. Though some fans believe Martian Manhunter is stronger, Wonder Woman has repeatedly shown she can go toe-to-toe with Superman, and her magical abilities might even give her the edge. Regardless, she remains DC’s most powerful female hero and a cornerstone of the original Justice League.
2) Flash
Many people might be surprised to see Flash ranked so highly, but evidence suggests he could be even more powerful than Superman. Though Flash is technically human, he’s connected to the Speed Force, allowing him to move incredibly fast – faster than almost anyone in the DC Universe, with only another member of the Flash family, Wally West, being quicker. Because of his speed, Flash could realistically win any fight before his opponent even realizes it’s begun.
DC Comics has often needed to create challenges for the Flash (both Barry Allen and Wally West) because of how incredibly fast they are. When operating at their full potential, they’re virtually unstoppable, and Barry once even altered reality itself with the story Flashpoint. While he’s arguably the most powerful hero in the DC Universe, there’s still one being who surpasses him.
1) Superman
Superman is widely considered the most powerful hero in DC Comics history. What truly keeps him in check isn’t a lack of power, but the strong moral values instilled in him by his adoptive parents. He deliberately avoids using his full strength in most fights, understanding how easily he could seriously harm or even kill an opponent. However, when facing truly formidable enemies like Darkseid or Doomsday, he unleashes his full potential, demonstrating the extent of his incredible power.
Superman is incredibly fast, though not quite as quick as the Flash or Wally West. Still, he’s fast enough to stay competitive when they race. He possesses the strength to move planets and destroy stars, and his power level is unmatched among the original members of the Justice League, making him the most powerful of them all.
