Every Original X-Men Hero Ranked By Power

The X-Men, a team of mutants, were first introduced in Marvel Comics’ The Uncanny X-Men. Unlike the origin stories of teams like The Fantastic Four and The Avengers, the first issue of The Uncanny X-Men began with the Xavier Institute and its four members already established. The comic introduced Jean Grey as the newest—and fifth—member of the team. Charles Xavier explained that the X-Men’s purpose was to help people and show them there was no need to fear mutants. While many mutants have joined over the years, it all began with these original five.

The X-Men have seen many powerful mutants come and go, but let’s take a look at the five original members and rank them by how strong they are.

5) Angel

Angel, one of the original X-Men, has developed abilities over time, but he’s still the team’s weakest member. Born Warren Worthington III, his mutation simply gave him wings, allowing him to fly. While Professor Xavier and the Danger Room made him a capable fighter, his typical approach involved flying in, attacking, and quickly escaping before enemies could retaliate.

After Apocalypse gave him incredibly sharp wings that fired mental projectiles, he became an Archangel and gained significant power. Though now able to fly and attack with these dagger-like shards, he still wasn’t the strongest of the original X-Men.

4) Beast

I’ve been reading the early X-Men comics, and I always loved Beast! When he first appeared, he looked like a really strong, athletic guy – just bigger than most. He could move incredibly fast and take on anyone with his strength. It was fascinating to see him later try to find a ‘cure’ for his powers, and that’s when he started to develop the blue fur and truly look like a beast. But even with that change in appearance, he still had all the same amazing abilities – super strength, agility, and endurance. He was always a powerhouse!

What truly sets Beast apart from other mutants like Angel, in my opinion, is his incredible intelligence. He’s a genuine genius – one of the brightest minds Marvel has ever seen, though he doesn’t quite reach the level of Reed Richards or Tony Stark. It’s his powerful intellect that made him such a threat when his moral compass started to falter, but it’s also the core of what makes him such a remarkable and powerful mutant.

3) Cyclops

While not the most powerful member of the Summers family, Cyclops was a key original X-Man. As a child, the villain Mister Sinister interfered with his developing mutant abilities, leaving Scott unable to control them. This means he needs special glasses to manage his powers, which are blasts of energy fired from his eyes.

Havoc and Cyclops share similar abilities, but Havoc absorbs and releases energy as blasts, while Cyclops focuses it through his eyes. Their brother, Vulcan, also controls this energy, and after a significant event, became incredibly powerful – even stronger than both of them. Cyclops isn’t just powerful due to his energy control, though; Captain America considers him the most skilled battlefield strategist in the entire Marvel Universe.

2) Iceman

Some people might be surprised to see Iceman ranked so highly, but X-Men comic readers won’t be. When the X-Men first appeared, Bobby Drake wasn’t particularly powerful – he was likely weaker than Beast and Cyclops. But over time, Iceman has become incredibly strong, now classified as an Omega-level mutant.

Iceman’s powers aren’t always at full strength, but he’s been able to reach their peak potential before, with help from people like Emma Frost. When he does, he can freeze almost anything – even light and hellfire – and even stop time itself. Plus, Iceman is practically immortal; even if he’s destroyed, he can reform and put himself back together.

1) Jean Grey

The strongest of the original X-Men was the last to join the team, appearing in X-Men #1. Jean Grey arrived at the Xavier Institute thinking she only had telekinetic abilities. However, she was far more powerful, but Professor X suppressed her full psychic potential, believing it was for her own protection until she was ready. This proved to be a mistake, as her powers were ultimately unlocked through her experiences with the Hellfire Club and the emergence of the Dark Phoenix.

Jean Grey’s connection to the Phoenix Force is a major reason she’s considered the most powerful of the original X-Men, and one of Marvel’s strongest heroes overall. She’s an incredibly powerful psychic and telekinetic, and the Phoenix Force elevates her to a god-like level. No other original X-Man could defeat her in a fight.
