Pokémon is hugely popular, and for good reason. It’s grown into a massive franchise with anime, video games, toys, and much more. Beyond the core games and spin-offs, The Pokémon Company has also tried out lots of different mobile apps – over 30, depending on how you count. However, not all of those mobile games have been successful.
The Pokemon Company has created many apps for Pokemon lovers. Over time, these have included storage apps like Pokemon HOME and simple games like Pokemon Smile. While some games, such as Magikarp Jump and Camp Pokemon, are no longer available, there are still plenty of Pokemon mobile games to choose from. If you’re trying to figure out which ones to keep on your phone, this ranking can help! We’ve rated each game from worst to best based on how much time you might spend playing, how enjoyable it is, and what other players think.
10. Pokemon Smile
Pokemon Smile is a cute app that tries to make brushing teeth fun for kids who love Pokemon. While it’s not exactly a traditional game, it motivates them to brush properly by letting them ‘rescue’ Pokemon from plaque and fight off bad bacteria, all while earning rewards.
You probably won’t spend a lot of time playing *Pokemon Smile*, but it’s a fun and simple way to encourage young children to brush their teeth and get acquainted with the world of Pokemon all at the same time.
9. Pokemon Shuffle Mobile
Pokemon Shuffle is a simple puzzle game, similar to Candy Crush. It’s free to play and has endless levels where you match Pokemon to clear the board. While many players still enjoy it, it’s often criticized for encouraging players to spend money to succeed, as catching Pokemon can be very difficult without making purchases.
If you enjoyed the original *Pokemon Shuffle* on 3DS and are looking for something similar, this game could be a good option. However, it’s not without flaws, and other recent Pokemon puzzle games offer a more balanced experience.
8. Pokemon Friends
The latest Pokémon game for mobile devices is *Pokémon Friends*, a puzzle game that was just announced and released during the Pokémon Presents showcase. Players solve puzzles to earn yarn, which they can then use to create adorable Pokémon plushies.
While the game itself is enjoyable, the mobile version is held back by several restrictions. The free-to-play version of *Pokemon Friends* only allows you to complete one puzzle each day. This slow pace means it takes a while to get to the more challenging and interesting puzzles, and you won’t earn rewards quickly. It’s a much better experience on the Nintendo Switch, and doesn’t rank among the top Pokemon games available on mobile.
7. Pokemon Sleep
I really love *Pokemon Sleep*. It’s visually adorable and has a great soundtrack. However, the core idea and how you play it mean it’s likely to appeal to a smaller group of people. Similar to *Pokemon Smile*, this app focuses more on health tracking than being a traditional game. *Pokemon Sleep* aims to monitor your sleep to help you rest better, though players aren’t always truthful about when they’re actually sleeping!
Pokemon Sleep works best when you check it several times throughout the day. Start by looking at your sleep data to find Pokemon, then keep Snorlax fed to draw more sleepy Pokemon to your campsite. It’s not a game you can play for hours at a time, which might make it hard to get into at first. But honestly, I can’t delete it because the sleepy Pokemon are so adorable!
6. Pokemon Quest
Many people have forgotten about *Pokemon Quest* because The Pokemon Company hasn’t updated it in two years. Still, it’s still available to download and play on iOS and Android, making it a current mobile game.
Pokemon Quest is a fun and simple game where you explore a blocky island, collect items, and build a team of Pokemon. It received positive reviews upon release, earning 4.3 stars on the App Store and 4.2 on Google Play. While enjoyable and easy to pick up, it’s not very complex, and unfortunately, it’s no longer being updated with new content, which keeps it from ranking higher on lists of top games.
5. Pokemon Cafe Remix
As someone who loves puzzle games like Candy Crush, I think Pokemon Cafe Remix could easily become one of my go-to’s! It’s just as adorable as Pokemon Sleep with its cute art style, but it’s way more addictive because of how you actually *play* the game. It took me a little while to figure out exactly how everything worked, but once I did, it was really satisfying!
The biggest issue with *Cafe Remix* is that it constantly pushes you to spend money. There are a lot of ads and in-app purchases, which can be annoying and disrupt the gameplay, especially when you return after a break. However, the puzzles themselves are enjoyable, and the Pokemon you collect are cute. Overall, it’s a decent mobile game if you like casual puzzle games and are a Pokemon fan.
4. Pokemon TCG Pocket
It was tough deciding where to place this game on my list. I still play *Pokemon TCG Pocket* almost every day! However, the gameplay is fairly simple – you mostly just collect cards and battle. Other games offer a bit more variety. Still, it’s a convenient way to play a quick version of the *Pokemon TCG* on your phone, and it satisfies that urge to open card packs, especially when physical cards are hard to come by.
Pokemon TCG Pocket is a beautiful mobile game where you collect cards and battle. While it doesn’t have as much story or content as some other mobile card games, it’s still one of the best Pokemon games available on mobile – you just might not spend quite as much time playing it as other titles.
3. Pokemon Masters EX
Pokémon Masters EX is a mobile game where you collect and battle with famous Pokémon Trainers. Released in 2019 by DeNA, the creators of Pokémon TCG Pocket, the game uses a ‘gacha’ system – meaning you randomly acquire characters – to build your team. While not massively popular, it has a loyal following.
The game receives consistent updates with new characters and story content. It’s free to download and play, though it offers optional in-app purchases – a common feature in these types of games. However, it’s more generous to players who don’t spend money than many similar games. You can earn rewards through gameplay, which some players enjoy. If you’re a fan of gacha games, *Pokemon Masters EX* is definitely worth a look.
2. Pokemon Unite
If you’re looking for a Pokémon battle game, *Pokémon Unite* is a great choice for mobile devices – it’s also available on Nintendo Switch! This free game focuses on team strategy, letting you directly control your Pokémon’s actions during matches. Being a team-based MOBA, it’s best for players who enjoy battling others, rather than those who prefer a solo experience. However, it’s very popular, so you’ll easily find plenty of other players to team up with.
Launched in 2021, *Pokemon Unite* continues to receive frequent updates, adding new playable Pokemon and cosmetic items. It’s a fast-paced action game designed for mobile devices, making it perfect for playing anywhere. While it’s considered generous for free-to-play players, the game does offer optional in-app purchases.
1. Pokemon Go
It’s true that *Pokémon Go* players often voice their frustrations, but a lot of us still play every day – checking for Pokémon, hatching eggs, and joining events. Even with its imperfections, *Pokémon Go* remains a remarkable achievement in mobile gaming. It doesn’t generate the same buzz as it did when it launched in 2016, but it’s still popular and played by many today.
Pokémon Go essentially lets you experience the world of Pokémon in your everyday life. The game uses real-world locations as places to find Pokémon and battle others, making it feel like you’re actually on a Pokémon adventure. With frequent in-game events, there’s always something exciting happening. This makes Pokémon Go the best Pokémon game you can play on your phone.
