Even though Star Trek has faced quiet periods in the past, it’s still surprising to realize that with the cancellation of Starfleet Academy, there are currently no Star Trek shows on the air. Since the original series premiered in 1966, the franchise has gone through many different versions and changes.

It’s surprising to think that Star Trek: The Original Series only ran from 1966 to 1969. The franchise didn’t return to television until The Animated Series in 1973, which lasted just two seasons. Then, after another 14 years, Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987 and enjoyed a successful run of seven seasons.

After successfully running until 1994, The Next Generation revitalized the Star Trek series and led to two new shows. Deep Space Nine and Voyager each enjoyed seven seasons, marking a particularly strong period for the franchise. Later, Enterprise, which aired from 2001 to 2005, ran for four seasons.

All Modern Star Trek Shows Have Officially Ended Or Been Canceled

After a period of being off television, the Star Trek franchise stayed alive with three movies: Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond. Then, in 2017, Discovery premiered, becoming a critical hit and marking a significant return for the series. It ran for five seasons with a total of 65 episodes, concluding in 2024.

Since the first season of Discovery aired, the Star Trek universe has expanded significantly on streaming platforms with shows like Short Treks, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy. These series have explored different approaches to storytelling, from the dramatic return of Patrick Stewart as Picard to the comedic animation of Lower Decks.

Star Trek’s Future Hasn’t Been This Uncertain For A Long Time

Although some recent shows didn’t completely satisfy longtime viewers, the franchise continued to produce a lot of new content. This suggested the series could go on indefinitely – at least until early 2026. Strange New Worlds, which premiered in 2022, is scheduled to release its fourth season that year.

Unfortunately, the show is no longer being made. The fifth and final season of Strange New World, consisting of six episodes, was announced in June 2025. With Discovery, Lower Decks, and Prodigy all ending in 2024, and Picard concluding in 2023, Starfleet Academy was the only Star Trek series still running.

Despite only launching in January 2026, the cancellation of Starfleet Academy after its second season means the franchise will soon have no current movies or TV shows available. This is the first time since the late 2000s that no new Starfleet content is in production or planned for release.

Star Trek Has Options For More Spinoffs, But Hasn’t Announced Anything

Despite three Star Trek reboot films appearing between the end of Enterprise in 2005 and the start of Discovery in 2017, the franchise faces a similar gap again. Once the current seasons of Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds conclude, Star Trek will be without new television content for a period, much like the four-year wait between Enterprise’s finale and the 2009 Star Trek movie.

The huge number of streaming shows clearly demonstrates that the Star Trek universe has plenty of stories left to tell. However, the franchise has recently focused on smaller, more specialized projects geared towards dedicated fans, rather than the larger, more mainstream productions like Discovery or the films directed by J.J. Abrams.

What We Know About Star Trek’s Future On The Big Screen

Shows like Picard and Lower Decks are built on the assumption that viewers already know a lot about Star Trek. This makes them enjoyable for longtime fans, but can be confusing for people new to the series. Unlike The Next Generation and the 2009 movie, which tried to attract new viewers, these shows are primarily designed for dedicated Star Trek enthusiasts.

This situation makes it difficult to know what’s next for the Star Trek series. While Star Trek Beyond did well in theaters and received good reviews when it came out, plans for another movie were dropped, and it’s been over a decade since a Star Trek film was released.

As a longtime fan, I was really surprised to learn this new movie has the biggest gap between installments in the whole series! Before this, they’d never gone more than seven years between films – that record was set after the movie that came out in 2002.

Both Star Trek: Nemesis and the 2009 Star Trek film were affected by the gap between releases. The 2009 movie was essentially a fresh start because it had been seven years since Nemesis, and audiences might have struggled to pick up the story where it left off. Nemesis also didn’t perform very well at the box office, contributing to the decision to reboot the series.

Should We Be Worried About Star Trek?

It used to be standard for movie franchises to quickly release sequels, but now longer gaps between films are becoming more common. This means the next Star Trek movie could continue the story started with the 2009 reboot. Even though there aren’t many new Star Trek projects currently in development, fans shouldn’t worry too much about the future of the franchise.

Historically, periods where Star Trek seemed to lose its way have always been followed by a burst of fresh ideas. We’ve seen this recently with the many new shows since 2017, and previously with the successful reboot in 2009 and its follow-ups. While it may take time for the franchise to find its next big story, fans can be confident that this sci-fi giant will continue to thrive.
