Every Star Wars Movie that Turned into a TV Show

Most people know Star Wars as a series of movies, but it’s become popular in other forms of entertainment too. When Disney+ launched in 2019, Star Wars quickly became a major part of live-action television. The series began with The Mandalorian, and several others followed, starting a new chapter for the franchise. While not every show was a hit, Andor is widely considered one of the best Star Wars stories ever told. Each series added to the official storyline, allowing for deeper character development and a richer universe than could be achieved in a typical movie.

The development of Star Wars TV shows happened as Disney decided to pause making new films in the series. After Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received mixed reviews, the studio chose to reduce its focus on movies. Before this change, many Star Wars films had been planned but ultimately cancelled. Fortunately, some of those ideas were then adapted and used for television series instead.

1) The Book of Boba Fett

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, fans quickly started hoping for a Boba Fett movie. It made sense, as the bounty hunter has been a favorite Star Wars character for years. Despite having very little screen time and an unceremonious exit in the original films, a spin-off would have been a great way to develop his story and give him the attention he deserved. Director Josh Trank, known for his work on Fantastic Four, was initially chosen to direct, but he left the project after a difficult experience with the Fantastic Four reboot. Lucasfilm made a late decision to cancel the Boba Fett film; they had even planned to announce it at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration, with Trank scheduled to appear on a panel about upcoming movies.

Boba Fett returned to the Star Wars universe in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, leading to his own show, The Book of Boba Fett. However, the series didn’t quite live up to expectations. Although it was compelling to see Boba’s relationship with the Tusken Raiders, the show’s story felt disjointed, especially when it shifted focus mid-season to Din Djarin, Grogu, and Luke Skywalker. Currently, The Book of Boba Fett is a limited series, and actor Temuera Morrison doesn’t know if he’ll reprise his role in the future.

2) Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rumors about Star Wars spin-off movies often mentioned Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fans loved Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the Jedi in the prequel films and wanted to see him reprise the role. While McGregor did eventually return to the franchise, his comeback wasn’t originally planned as a limited series. The initial idea was for a trilogy of Obi-Wan films, with writer Stuart Beattie envisioning a story that would show the character’s development leading up to the events of the original Star Wars movies.

After the Star Wars films paused production and Disney+ needed fresh shows, the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi was adapted into a 2022 TV series. The series used the first of three story ideas developed previously, focusing on Obi-Wan reconnecting with the Force while attempting to rescue a young Princess Leia. While some viewers had mixed reactions, the show successfully linked the prequel and original Star Wars movies, and expanded on the relationship between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Fans who enjoyed the prequels were delighted to see Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen work together again. The series was popular with audiences, but there are no current plans for a second season, though McGregor has expressed interest in returning to the role.

3) Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Before the release of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the creators often talked about being inspired by classic adventure films like E.T. – the Extra-Terrestrial and The Goonies – stories centered around kids embarking on exciting galactic adventures. It’s not a shock, then, that co-creator Jon Watts originally envisioned Skeleton Crew as a movie. However, due to his work on Spider-Man, the project was delayed. When Watts returned to the idea, Skeleton Crew had transformed into a television series.

When Disney+ launched, Jon Watts was able to develop his idea for Skeleton Crew into a television show. While details about the original movie concept are scarce, the core idea stayed consistent. The biggest advantage of making it a series was that Watts had more time to explore the characters and the world of galactic piracy, which really enhanced the show. Skeleton Crew was a success for Star Wars, especially after The Acolyte was cancelled, with viewers enjoying its classic adventure feel and the strong connection between the actors. The show tells a complete story, but a second season could happen if Watts comes up with a compelling new direction.
