Every Super Mario Bros. Power-Up in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Ranked by Power

As a huge movie fan, especially when it comes to video game adaptations, it was pretty clear after The Super Mario Bros. Movie smashed box office records – earning over $1.6 billion worldwide in 2023 – that the filmmakers had hit on a winning formula. It seemed like packing the movie with Easter eggs and little nods to fans was the way to go. And The Super Mario Galaxy Movie definitely leans into that even more! It’s absolutely loaded with references, cameos, surprise appearances, and levels ripped straight from decades of Nintendo games. Of course, that also means tons of the classic Mario power-ups we all know and love are making an appearance, which is awesome!

Similar to the first movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features familiar power-ups from the Mario games at just the right times, and even includes a few unexpected ones for fans. However, not all the power-ups are actually helpful, and some are even stronger than they are in the video games. We’ve included images from the movie to showcase each power-up. Be warned: spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are ahead!

10) Blimp Fruit

Just like in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game where it first appeared, the Blimp Fruit does what you’d expect in the movie: Yoshi eats it and puffs up like a balloon, floating away from Mario and Luigi. While it’s used during the fight with Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr., it doesn’t actually help much and mostly just makes Yoshi a burden. Overall, it’s the least effective power-up in the film.

9) Cape Feather

The Cape Feather is a fun item – I personally love flying with it and the cape looks great! However, it doesn’t really help Mario in battles or give him much power. You only get it right at the end of the game, after building Princess Peach’s castle, to fly up and place a flag. It’s a neat bonus and a fun surprise, but not something useful during a fight.

8) Penguin Suit

The Penguin Suit appears briefly in the movie, used only by Toad. During a fight with Wort’s army at the casino, Toad grabs the suit and uses it to evade the Ninjis. It doesn’t have a major role beyond this, but it’s actually more helpful than the other two power-ups shown in the film.

7) Fire Flower

The Fire Flower, a classic power-up from the Super Mario games and featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has a brief role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Both Mario and Luigi use it after discovering a strange pyramid early in the film. However, unlike in the first movie, it doesn’t contribute much to combat – even though Luigi throws a lot of fireballs at enemies we can’t see! While the Fire Flower does serve a purpose in this scene, it’s not as powerful as fans might expect.

6) Ice Flower

With Princess Peach and Toad gone to rescue Rosalina, Mario and Luigi are left to manage everything back in the Mushroom Kingdom. We see them tackling all kinds of problems in a fast-paced sequence. One minor issue involves a sad toad whose ice cream falls; it was a huge cone! Mario uses an Ice Flower to make more ice cream, but accidentally freezes Luigi in a block of ice, offering only a fist bump as consolation. This suggests the Ice Flower could be very powerful in a fight, though we don’t know for certain.

5) Cloud Flower

While Yoshi is temporarily hindered by eating the Blimp Fruit, Luigi obtains the Cloud Flower, granting him the ability to create clouds he can jump on. He also discovers he can use these clouds as shields to block enemy attacks. During the battle with Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr., the Cloud Flower proves to be more useful for defense than offense.

4) Mushroom

Okay, so in the new movie, Peach has this awesome moment after taking down the Ninjis. She uses a mushroom – and it really works! It makes her grow huge, like, seriously strong. Even though Wort is still refusing to tell her anything, she gets so big she can literally pick him up with one arm! It’s a quick scene, but it totally shows you that those mushrooms are a big deal in the Mario world – definitely not something to mess with!

3) Frog Suit

It’s easy to think the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 wouldn’t be very helpful, and it initially seems that way. However, when Luigi wears the suit, he jumps incredibly high and lands a powerful kick on a large Cheep Cheep that had swallowed a Toad. This kick not only damages the fish, but also makes it spit out the Toad! It’s a quick scene, but it perfectly shows just how effective these power-ups can be.

2) Drill Mushroom

Yoshi has a special blimp fruit, and Luigi gets the Cloud Flower, but Mario receives the incredibly strong Drill Mushroom. Just like in the games, this allows Mario to burrow underground, travel through tunnels, and even launch himself into the air for a devastating attack against Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. It was by far the most helpful power-up shown so far, though Mario would soon get another one…

1) Red Star

During the final battle with Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr., Bowser Jr. uses a special paintbrush to create a stronger version of the Ruined Dragon. While Red Stars in Super Mario Galaxy simply let Mario fly and change his outfit color, in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie they’re incredibly powerful. Mario uses a Red Star to quickly reach the battle and, after being swallowed by the Ruined Dragon, breaks free, defeats the beast, saves Bowser Jr., and ends the threat. This makes the Red Star the most effective power-up in the movie.
