Every Superman Character Ranked By How Powerful They Are

In James Gunn’s Superman, an impressive array of characters are skillfully handled without overwhelming the narrative, while the metahumans showcase their extraordinary abilities. However, among these powerful beings, who holds the greatest strength? Let’s examine each one to find out. It is important to note that only characters played by actors were considered for this comparison – hence, Lex Luthor’s Kaiju and Krypto were excluded from the analysis. Additionally, unless otherwise stated, only metahumans were included in this discussion.

In other words, we are looking at the power levels of the cast members who possess extraordinary abilities in the movie. The one exception to this rule is Lex Luthor himself, as his unique position will be addressed within his own entry.

Lois Lane is undeniably a formidable writer, yet it’s important to remember she’s human, not comparable to figures like Mister Terrific or Green Lantern on an unfair basis. Additionally, the movie omitted two major appearances that didn’t allow us to evaluate their abilities in this specific instance. We didn’t get a chance to witness them in action.

8) Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is present because wealth equals power, and he possesses an abundance of it. However, his power is fragile, depending on the person spending the money. In this movie’s portrayal, Lex Luthor remains intelligent but lacks substantial human strength.

This individual exhibits high dependency, aggressive behavior, and a very quick temper. His demeanor is so intense that even Gene Hackman’s portrayal of the character appears composed in comparison. Notably, he was defeated by a dog, an event that likely dented his already inflated ego, regardless of the dog’s extraordinary abilities. In essence, this adaptation of Luthor seems to have a more complex emotional and physical presence than Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but only slightly so.

7) Hawkgirl

In a simpler and more conversational manner: Although Isabela Merced’s character Kendra Saunders, also known as Hawkgirl, may not be the most powerful member of the Justice League, it doesn’t mean she lacks significance. In fact, it’s more about the other members being exceptionally powerful. Similar to Green Lantern who needs his ring for full effectiveness, Hawkgirl relies on her suit. Yet, even without it, she possesses strength beyond the average human. With the suit on, she can fly at incredible speeds and use that speed to deliver a mighty blow with her mace.

In summary, there’s a compelling case for promoting Hawkgirl in the rankings due to an essential aspect of her backstory that the movie merely suggests. Essentially, Hawkgirl is repeatedly reborn from a Thanagarian alien, and if this adaptation allows for endless reincarnation upon death, it could significantly elevate her standing. However, it remains uncertain at this point whether this ability will indeed be featured in the film.

6) The Engineer

Among Lex Luthor’s two chief enforcers, Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, holds a significant position. Unlike the other one who is stronger, she’s no pushover. In fact, it’s Angela who comes the closest in Gunn’s film to potentially defeating Superman.

The Engineer, equipped with advanced nanotechnology much like Green Lantern’s power ring, has the ability to shape nearly anything she envisions. When a gang of villains breach the Fortress of Solitude, she crafts saw blades and employs them to neutralize the Superman Robots. Later in the movie, she manipulates the nanotechnology to asphyxiate Superman. In response, he soars into the stratosphere to free himself. However, even after their impactful landing back on Earth, neither she nor Superman nor Ultraman regain consciousness.

5) Mister Terrific

In the popular opinion, Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific in Superman is often considered the best character, excluding Krypto. Gathegi truly shines, radiating charisma in every scene. Interestingly, although the character he plays might not be widely recognized, it proves to be quite intriguing too. This situation resembles how James Gunn transformed a B-list character into an A-list presence, much like what he achieved with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the film Superman, it’s often Mister Terrific who receives an impressive action scene. Accompanied by Lois Lane in their quest to find Superman, they encounter a horde of thugs hired by Luthercorp at the entrance to the pocket dimension. Mister Terrific ensures Lane’s safety within an energy shield while he agilely fights off each goon with his flying chair and T-Spheres. His remarkable intellect also makes him an outstanding member of the Justice League (or whatever the team eventually gets named). Definitely, a more creative name for the group might be found somewhere.

4) Metamorpho

In the realm of Lex Luthor’s alternate universe, I – Metamorpho, or Rex Mason as you may know me – am confined within a fortified glass chamber. Despite possessing the power to shatter these walls effortlessly, I choose not to act, for in an adjacent cell lies one of Luthor’s henchmen, cradling my infant son.

Metamorpho serves as a check against Superman’s power, possessing the unique ability to change his form at will. For example, he can transform into Kryptonite, which is lethal to Superman. In addition, he can convert his body into corrosive acid, as shown in the film when he uses it on Luthor’s soldiers. Metamorpho also has flight capabilities and enhanced durability and strength depending on the material he transforms into. Remarkably, if a limb is severed from him, he can regenerate another one. By the end of the movie, Metamorpho joins the Justice League during their intervention in the war between Boravia and Jarhanpur. He immobilizes a horde of Boravian soldiers by spraying them with a rainbow liquid. Among the members of the Justice League, he is one of the most powerful, second only to another member.

3) Green Lantern

Despite being known for his overconfidence and occasional lack of intellect, Nathan Fillion’s character Guy Gardner is indeed the strongest member within the Justice League collective. In truth, whoever wields the Green Lantern Corps Power Ring is among the DC Universe’s mightiest figures.

In this scenario and as depicted in the unfortunate 2011 movie, the Power Ring is capable of creating whatever its user visualizes. Whether for attack or protection, its power is essentially unbounded by the creator’s ingenuity and imagination. This makes it an incredibly valuable asset within a group, like when he rescues Mister Terrific from the Kaiju by conjuring a Kaiju-sized muzzle. In fact, he once disabled approximately 100 Boravian troops using colossal green middle fingers, which seems to justify ranking him third on the list.

2) Ultraman

In the narrative, Superman is introduced right in the thick of things, or “in medias res.” To begin with, we encounter Ultraman as The Hammer of Boravia, causing havoc over Metropolis and warning its citizens about Superman’s interference in the conflict between Boravia and Jarhanpur. As Superman arrives on the scene, Lex Luthor is manipulating this villain, using unique codes to control The Hammer of Boravia’s attacks.

This initial evidence strongly suggests that Ultraman is a duplicate of Superman. His actions mimic moves Luthor observed Superman perform. After Superman, the Engineer, and Ultraman fall back to Earth following her filling the former with nanotech, Ultraman’s mask cracks, revealing he’s another Corenswet-version of Superman. However, at the end of the day, they are not the same character because Superman operates independently, while Ultraman is controlled. Luthor also notes that Ultraman isn’t as intelligent as Superman. Although they match physically, when considering various aspects of strength, Superman holds a distinct advantage.

1) Superman

In this scenario, when we encounter David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, he’s severely wounded. Krypto is tasked with transporting him back to the Fortress of Solitude, where his robots can assist him in absorbing the sun’s rays for recovery. Despite his injuries, Superman remains the most powerful figure in the movie due to his inherent abilities.

In this portrayal of Superman, much like other versions, he exhibits incredible physical strength – capable of defeating monstrous Kaijus, flying faster than sound, and effortlessly lifting buildings without exerting himself. Yet, what sets him apart is his emotional resilience, remaining steadfast even amidst a heart-wrenching revelation about his biological parents. This Superman received only a fragment of his parents’ message but managed to make the most out of it. His actions are guided by compassion, and we speculate that if he had received the full message from his parents, his choices probably wouldn’t have changed drastically.
