Superman’s core belief is always to do what’s right, no matter the situation. He immediately helps anyone in need, like rescuing a cat from a tree, because he believes every life matters. Even for someone he despises, like Lex Luthor, Superman would risk everything. This unwavering positivity comes from his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, who taught him that true strength isn’t about superpowers, but about character. While he consistently prioritizes his humanity, sometimes circumstances force him to act differently.
Superman movies often feature him battling incredibly strong villains who won’t hesitate to cause massive destruction. This puts immense pressure on Superman, forcing him to use his full power and demonstrate just how strong he truly is. Here’s a ranking of every actor who has played Superman, based on how powerful their portrayal of the character is.
5) George Reeve

While George Reeves is famous for starring as Superman in the TV series *Adventures of Superman*, his first role as the hero was actually in the movie *Superman and the Mole Men*. Unfortunately, the movie isn’t very memorable – it centers on Clark Kent and Lois Lane investigating a strange case in a small town. Because Superman doesn’t get to use his powers much in this early film, it ranks lower on the list of his appearances.
4) Brandon Routh

Superman Returns continues the story started with the 1978 Superman film, taking place a few years after the events of Superman II. Because it stays true to Richard Donner’s original vision, the movie feels realistic, even with a superhero like Superman. While he performs impressive feats like rescuing a space shuttle and moving a large landmass into space, the lack of a strong villain holds Brandon Routh’s portrayal of Superman back, placing it around fourth best in the series.
3) David Corenswet

James Gunn’s take on Superman starts with a surprising scene: the Man of Steel losing a fight. His first opponent is actually a clone of himself, known as the Hammer of Boravia, who proves to be a tough match. While Clark Kent does achieve some victories in the movie – including defeating the Engineer and Lex Luthor’s robotic creatures – that initial defeat is memorable. However, Superman is still new to the hero game, so he has plenty of opportunity to improve and prove his strength.
2) Christopher Reeve

I’ve always felt Christopher Reeve *was* Superman, and it’s amazing to me that even though there have been several actors playing the role now, he still holds the record for most times suiting up! He got to play the Man of Steel four times, which meant he battled some seriously iconic villains – a dark version of himself, the terrifying General Zod, and even Nuclear Man. And the best part? His Superman *always* won. That’s why, in my opinion, he absolutely deserves to be considered one of the very best.
1) Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill’s Superman has an advantage over Christopher Reeve’s: he exists within a larger world of superheroes and villains. Despite some problems with the movies themselves, the DC Extended Universe throws a lot at Superman, forcing him to battle powerful enemies like Zod and Doomsday, who even manages to kill him. Though he’s resurrected, Superman still faces threats, including an alien invasion that ultimately isn’t a major challenge.
