Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, is frequently undervalued due to the misconception that he’s merely capable of breathing underwater and talking to fish. In reality, Aquaman stands among the mightiest and bravest superheroes within the DC Comics universe. He is an original member of the Justice League and governs Atlantis, one of the planet’s most formidable nations. With a rich history in teamwork and leadership, it’s no wonder that Aquaman has established and led several superhero teams. These groups were created to safeguard Atlantis, the surface world, or even the entire universe. And there’s little doubt that the King of the Seven Seas is an ideal leader for such a mission.
From Atlantis to Detroit, Aquaman has led superhero teams across the globe.
4) Justice League Detroit
The Justice League branch based in Detroit, Michigan formed following Aquaman’s dissolution of the original JLA in 1984. After many original Justice League members either left or were engaged in Multiversal missions, a Martian invasion struck Earth and destroyed the Watchtower. This chaotic event left the remaining Justice League members disorganized, prompting Aquaman to propose change. As one of the last original members still active, Aquaman declared at a UN meeting that the old Justice League had ended and a new team would take its place. Alongside Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, and Elongated Man, Aquaman assembled a group of less experienced superheroes ready to dedicate themselves to the Justice League. This roster included Hank Heywood II, also known as Steel, an indestructible cyborg; Cydny Reynolds, known as Gypsy, with the ability to create illusions; Paco Ramone, known as Vibe, who could project focused vibrations; and Mari McCabe, known as Vixen, able to replicate animal powers. Aquaman served as team leader for a year before stepping down to focus on his relationship with Mera. Martian Manhunter then assumed leadership duties from his friend. The team functioned for only a few years until, in 1987, they disbanded following a string of humiliating defeats at the hands of villains like Brimstone and Professor Ivo, which left many members either critically injured or deceased. Justice League Detroit faced significant criticism from fans due to the absence of top-tier heroes and concerns about some new characters reinforcing racial stereotypes.
3) The Others
Long before Aquaman became a member of the Justice League, he established a group of superheroes known as “The Others.” Each member in this team wields ancient and potent artifacts created by Atlantis’ first king, King Atlan. Members include Ya’Wara, The Operative, Prisoner-of-War, Vostok-X, and Kahina the Seer. They initially united to apprehend Black Manta but were unable to capture him. Years later, Black Manta was hired to eliminate all former members and take their artifacts. Upon learning of this plot by Black Manta, Aquaman teamed up with Ya’Wara to reunite the group. Despite their valiant efforts, Black Manta managed to acquire several relics.
With these relics in hand, Black Manta located Atlan’s Scepter, which he passed on to his employer, the Atlantean Nuidis Vulko. This act was part of a long-term plan orchestrated by Vulko, who aimed to instigate war between Atlantis and the surface world. Consequently, Aquaman was compelled to return to his throne, ultimately fulfilling Vulko’s intentions. The Others subsequently joined forces to thwart Mayhem, a supervillain group seeking to take control of the world using nuclear missiles. Although they were successful in their mission, the team dissolved again as many members decided to retire from their superhero duties.
2) Justice League Blue
In a recent development, the newest superhero squad, led by Aquaman, has come together as an underwater team. Their mission is to free “The Blue,” the universe’s mystical water and life source, from the grasp of the extra-dimensional villain Dagon. By using the Ocean Orb, a powerful magical artifact, Dagon had been controlling The Blue’s energy for his own benefit. This manipulation resulted in Atlantis, along with its inhabitants, being transported into Dagon’s dimension. Should Dagon continue to control The Blue, it would lead to the extinction of all life across the universe.
In the course of events, Aquaman is captured by Dagon’s followers and taken to his domain. There, Dagon explains that due to time dilation, Atlantis has been under Dagon’s rule for decades. Aquaman eventually manages to escape his captivity and assembles a team of water-based superheroes, known as Justice League Blue, to help save Atlantis and the universe.
This team consists of older versions of Tempest, Aqualad, and Aquaman’s daughter Andy Curry; Arion, an Atlantean sorcerer; Lady of the Lake, a mystical blacksmith; Zan, one-half of the Wonder Twins; Titanus, a humanoid shark; Captain Nemo, a submariner; and Lori Lemaris, a mermaid.
Together, under Aquaman’s leadership, they defeat Dagon but unfortunately suffer losses when Tempest and Aqualad are killed by the villain. With Dagon defeated, Aquaman and the remaining members of Justice League Blue are now preparing to return to Earth.
1) The Aquaman Family
In the realm of Gotham, we have Batman’s family, while Atlantis boasts the Aquaman Family. This team of valiant heroes serves as guardians for Atlantis and the vast Seven Seas. Led by the titular hero himself, the Aquaman Family comprises members from the Atlantean Royal Family and their most trusted allies. They stand as Atlantis’ first defense against adversaries such as Black Manta, Ocean Master, and the Trench. The family is not exclusive to blood relations; it includes Aquaman’s wife, Mera, former sidekicks Tempest and Aqualad, his stepsister Tula, superheroine Dolphin, and the Atlantean Lagoon Boy. The group shares a tight-knit bond that has only grown stronger with the arrival of their daughter, Andy Curry. The connection among the Aquaman family is one of the most robust among all DC Comics’ superhero families.
