Okay, so I just saw the first part of the Wicked movie, and honestly, it’s a visual feast! It mostly focuses on how Elphaba and Glinda go from rivals to friends, but what really struck me was how much the filmmakers packed into every scene. The sets, the costumes, even the way the characters talk – it’s all filled with little Easter eggs for fans of The Wizard of Oz. They’re subtly hinting at what’s to come in the second movie, Wicked: For Good, and it’s brilliantly done. You’ll be picking up on details long after the credits roll, I promise!
These subtle hints foreshadow the heartbreaking events and changes that our beloved characters will face, and they even offer clues about the mysterious tornado that carried Dorothy off to an unknown land.
7) The Cowardly Cub

Okay, so there’s this scene in Wicked where Elphaba’s professor is trying to make a point about keeping Animals from talking, and he brings in this poor, scared lion cub. It really sets Elphaba off, and her magic explodes – literally, in a burst of poppy flowers that knock everyone out! Except for Fiyero, though. That moment is huge because it’s the first time Elphaba sees past Fiyero’s cool exterior and starts to understand who he really is. And get this – it also explains how one of Dorothy’s friends from The Wizard of Oz comes to be! It’s a clever little connection that really adds to the whole story.
When Elphaba and Fiyero released the young cub into the forest, they didn’t consider he’d been raised in captivity. This left him frightened and lacking confidence. This scene shows us why the cub grows up to be the Cowardly Lion – combined with the loss of his parents due to the Wizard’s lies, it explains why he’s so afraid when he later meets Dorothy on the Yellow Brick Road.
6) Fiyero’s Pose

One of the most noticeable clues about Fiyero’s fate is his posture. While at Shiz University, he often stands with his arms outstretched and raised, subtly mirroring the image of the Scarecrow stuck on a pole. This connection is even emphasized during the song “Dancing Through Life,” when he performs a full split – a move characteristic of the Scarecrow.
Fiyero’s rigid posture is a deliberate echo of his first appearance in the classic film, The Wizard of Oz, where he’s shown stiff and posed in a field. This clever visual cue subtly suggests his eventual fate – becoming the Scarecrow – even before the audience knows it’s coming.

The incredibly popular number “Dancing Through Life” from Wicked perfectly showcases Fiyero’s playful personality, but his dancing also reveals a deeper meaning. When he jumps onto desks at Shiz University to encourage his classmates to join him in goofing off, his dance style is intentionally awkward, loose, and almost like a marionette being controlled by strings.
Fiyero’s awkward, twitchy movements closely resemble the distinctive, floppy style of the Scarecrow in the 1939 movie. This isn’t just meant to show he’s relaxed – it’s a subtle hint about what will eventually happen to his body.
4) Fiyero’s “Brainless” Life Philosophy

The song “Dancing Through Life” contains clear hints about what will happen to Fiyero. He shares his life philosophy with the serious students of Shiz, explaining that he prefers to avoid deep thought and doesn’t strive to be seen as particularly intelligent.
Lines like “Life is painless for the brainless” and “Life is fraughtless when you’re thoughtless” reveal more than just a carefree attitude; they consistently highlight his weakness – a tendency to act without thinking. The line “Why think so hard when it’s so soothing?” becomes particularly meaningful considering the Scarecrow’s main desire is to receive a brain from the Wizard.
3) Boq’s Tin Man Movements

When Glinda meets Boq, a shy Munchkin, he’s initially slouched to one side. As he tries to make a good impression, he straightens up very stiffly, almost as if an outside force is pulling him upright.
A subtle detail in Boq’s first scene hints at the Tin Man. Like the Tin Man, who is stiff and rusty from years of not moving, Boq briefly moves in a jerky, mechanical way. This foreshadows the artificial, metallic state that ultimately keeps Boq alive in the story of The Wizard of Oz.
2) Foreshadowed Weather Manipulation

The musical Wicked strongly suggests that the tornado which carries Dorothy to Oz isn’t a natural disaster, but something more. During young Elphaba’s private lessons with Madam Morrible at Shiz University, Morrible explains that she has magical abilities related to controlling the elements of nature.
Morrible has the power to control the weather, including wind and clouds. This is crucial to the story because the tornado that carries Dorothy and Toto away isn’t a natural disaster – it’s deliberately caused by Morrible’s magic, and this will be fully explained later.
1) Boq’s Last Name

The first hint about what will happen to Boq comes in a seemingly unimportant moment. When he meets Glinda at Shiz University, he mentions his last name is Woodsman.
The character’s surname clearly foreshadows his fate as the Tin Man, hinting at his tragic transformation. By giving Boq this significant last name, the film reveals which iconic Oz character he will ultimately become, setting the stage for the events to come.
