The movie *Tron: Legacy* earned $44 million on its opening weekend in 2010 and ultimately grossed $172 million domestically, adding another $228 million internationally. While not a huge failure, it didn’t become a massive blockbuster. More recently, *Tron: Ares* opened with $33.2 million domestically and $26.7 million internationally. Even accounting for 15 years of inflation, *Ares* earned less on its opening weekend than *Legacy*. This suggests that *Ares* may be the last *Tron* movie we see in theaters, which is disappointing because, despite its flaws, it’s an enjoyable film, particularly when viewed in IMAX.
As a big fan of the *Tron* universe, I’ve been wondering where the new series, *Ares*, fits in with the original *Tron* and *Tron: Legacy*. Let’s dive in and see how it stacks up!
3) Tron: Ares
“Tron: Ares” clearly aimed high with noble ideas, but ultimately falls short of delivering a truly impactful message. While the film tries to suggest that artificial intelligence might not be inherently evil, it simultaneously plants a strong seed of doubt about its intentions. This internal contradiction makes it hard to fully connect with Jared Leto’s character and the emotional moments he’s supposed to evoke. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s definitely a distraction. And for many viewers, the film’s attempt to portray an AI’s longing for humanity through a quirky obsession with Depeche Mode might just be too strange to accept.
Despite its flaws, there are aspects of *Ares* that work, even if the praise feels somewhat backhanded. The criticism surrounding Leto’s casting seems more like typical online negativity than legitimate concerns about his acting. His subdued performance feels like a deliberate artistic choice, not a lack of skill. The visual effects are still good, though they don’t quite reach the spectacular level of *Tron: Legacy*. It’s wonderful to see Greta Lee in a significant role, but even as a lead, her character isn’t given much depth. *Ares* finishes with a cliffhanger that hints at a more exciting sequel, but with that now unlikely, the film feels incomplete and ultimately unsatisfying.
2) Tron
The original *Tron* is a beloved classic, but it definitely hasn’t aged perfectly – some will adore it, while others might find it dated. Like *The Goonies*, it’s a film you really need to have experienced as a kid to fully appreciate.
While *Tron* has a lot going for it – like its cool 80s tech aesthetic and the performances of Jeff Bridges and David Warner – it doesn’t quite draw you in as much as you’d expect. We don’t really connect with any of the characters, even Flynn, who’s central to the story. It’s essentially a simple revenge tale with a shiny digital look. Interestingly, this straightforward approach works for the film, but the emotional core of *Tron: Legacy* – a son rediscovering a father he believed had left him – feels much more powerful.
1) Tron: Legacy
Similar to the first *Tron* film, *Tron: Legacy* performed decently in theaters but didn’t receive rave reviews. However, like its predecessor, it has gained a better reputation over time. While this second installment might have a slightly complicated plot, it remains an engaging watch. Jeff Bridges delivers a strong performance, playing two versions of his character – and even though the technology used to make one of them look younger isn’t perfect, it’s a minor flaw. Otherwise, *Legacy* is a visually stunning film.
This movie was incredibly fun to watch in theaters and still holds up beautifully on TV. The amazing visuals are perfectly complemented by Daft Punk’s fantastic and flawless score. With a strong performance from Garrett Hedlund and a breakout role for Olivia Wilde, this film stands out as one of Disney’s most significant releases of the 2010s. It also helped launch the career of director Joseph Kosinski, which fans of his later film, *Top Gun: Maverick*, will especially appreciate.
