Although the original series concluded in 2019, the world of Westeros continues to expand. HBO is currently developing several spin-off shows based on Game of Thrones, with House of the Dragon already proving popular. Game of Thrones itself, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, became a major cultural event during its eight seasons.
Even though the ending of Game of Thrones left many fans unhappy, the world created in the show still has a lot of story potential for television. It’s understandable that there’s interest in creating new Game of Thrones series to build on the franchise. With so much competition among streaming services, having established and popular stories is becoming more and more important.
Because Martin built such a detailed and expansive world, there are endless stories that can be told within it. House of the Dragon was a great start, exploring earlier events. Now, we can look forward to future shows that will delve even further into the history of Westeros and beyond.

House Of The Dragon Seasons 3 & 4
Honestly, after that really disappointing final season of Game of Thrones, I didn’t know if HBO could recapture the magic. But House of the Dragon? It was exactly what we needed! It felt familiar – still set in George R.R. Martin’s world and with a similar feel to Game of Thrones – but it also gave us a fresh story and new characters to get invested in. It really brought me back to why I loved that universe in the first place.
The success of House of the Dragon led HBO to immediately approve two additional spinoff shows. Season 2 of House of the Dragon then followed through on the dramatic ending of season one, fully exploring the brutal Targaryen civil war.
With four seasons planned for House of the Dragon, the show is currently around the midpoint of its run. Since new seasons have been released every two years, we can anticipate the fourth season will premiere in the summer of 2028.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms
A new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is in development, drawing from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories. Although some fans anticipated the show would keep the Game of Thrones title, George R.R. Martin explained that a title change was needed to avoid confusion for those who haven’t read the original Dunk and Egg novellas.
So far, George R.R. Martin has published three stories featuring Dunk and Egg: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. The TV series based on these stories will begin airing on January 18, 2026, at 10 PM Eastern and Pacific time.
Okay, so I just finished watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it’s seriously good. It centers around this wandering knight, Dunk – eventually Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey – who’s basically a good guy with ambitions. He takes on a young squire named Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, and the show follows their travels and adventures. It’s a prequel to Game of Thrones, set about 90 years before, and while it’s not quite as sprawling or dark as the main series, it’s still incredibly engaging and a lot of fun to watch. It feels a bit more… hopeful, honestly.
Aegon’s Conquest
The name “Aegon” is significant throughout the history of Game of Thrones because of Aegon the Conqueror, the Targaryen who came from Valyria and famously conquered Westeros with his dragons. Because of this, many fans have hoped to see a story about his conquest – which happened 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones – explored in a spinoff series.
HBO is officially working on a series called Aegon’s Conquest, and Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman, is developing it. While there are no details yet about who will star or when it will be released, the story is based on the book Fire & Blood. Unlike House of the Dragon, which tells the story of the Targaryen family’s decline, Aegon’s Conquest will focus on how they originally seized power through war.
The Golden Empire
Plans for an animated spin-off of Game of Thrones have been in the works since early 2021. The world of Westeros has already been explored through animated historical segments on Game of Thrones DVDs and Blu-rays, making an animated series a natural extension of the franchise, though on a much larger scale.
The show’s title comes from the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, a land in eastern Essos that isn’t explored in detail in the source material beyond the book The World of Ice & Fire. There haven’t been many public updates about the Golden Empire spinoff since it was first announced, and development has largely been kept under wraps.
George R.R. Martin is excited about the early artwork for a new show and appears to be helping develop its story, which he believes will be very different from anything else in his world. This show, tentatively titled The Golden Empire, would depict a society unlike those featured in Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. While it’s still under consideration, other projects like Aegon’s Conquest and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have already been officially approved.
The Sea Snake
A new animated Game of Thrones show, titled The Sea Snake, is in the works. It’s essentially a second spinoff, focusing on the story of Corlys Velaryon – known as the Sea Snake and played by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon. The show will explore his legendary voyages.
The Sea Snake sailed to distant and often unexplored parts of the world – going beyond the areas of Essos seen in Game of Thrones and even reaching places like Yi Ti – and amassed a huge fortune during his travels. Bryan Heller, a co-creator of HBO’s Rome, is part of the team developing this potential animated spin-off, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
I was really excited when I first heard about a spin-off focusing on the Sea Snake, but it sounds like things have changed. George R.R. Martin mentioned on his blog that if the show actually gets made, it’s now going to be animated instead of live-action. Apparently, it just became more affordable that way, which is a bit of a disappointment, but hopefully, animation will allow them to really capture the scope of his adventures.

A new Game of Thrones spinoff in development focuses on Princess Nymeria of the Rhoyne. About 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the Rhoynar civilization was destroyed by the Valyrian Freehold. Nymeria led her people to find safety and freedom, famously commanding a fleet of 10,000 ships down the Rhoyne river and away from Essos – a story that’s now inspiring this new series.
The tale of Nymeria is legendary in the history of Westeros and is linked to the show Game of Thrones through Arya Stark’s direwolf, who shares the princess’s name. Amanda Segel, known for her work on Person of Interest, is writing the series 10,000 Ships, but the rest of the creative team hasn’t been announced yet.
Similar to other planned shows like The Sea Snake and The Golden Empire, this Game of Thrones prequel has been in the works for a long time. George R.R. Martin has said that only two animated spinoffs will continue, but he hasn’t said which ones. As a result, one of these projects – The Golden Empire, The Sea Snake, or 10,000 Ships – will likely be cancelled.
Which Game Of Thrones Spinoffs Are No Longer Happening
Not all of the planned Game of Thrones series are still in development. It’s common for ideas to be dropped in Hollywood, and HBO is very careful about which projects it moves forward with. So far, we know that three potential spinoff shows were considered, but ultimately weren’t picked up.
The Jon Snow Spinoff Is No Longer In Development At HBO
As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I was really excited when HBO announced a new show focusing on Jon Snow back in June 2022. It was going to pick up after the controversial ending, dealing with everything that happened with Daenerys – you know, him having to betray and kill her, and then being exiled north of the Wall. Sadly, it seems that show isn’t happening. Kit Harington himself announced in April 2024 that HBO ultimately decided to scrap the project because they just couldn’t find a story direction that everyone agreed on. It’s a real shame, but it sounds like they didn’t want to risk doing another season that didn’t live up to expectations.
Why Bloodmoon Was Canceled Despite Filming A Pilot
Back in the summer of 2018, HBO revealed plans for a new Game of Thrones show set thousands of years in the past—specifically, 8,000 years before the original series. This project, titled Bloodmoon, was to be written by Jane Goldman, known for her work on Kick-Ass, and would star Naomi Watts as the lead.
The show was originally intended to tell the story of The Long Night and show the first appearance of the White Walkers. But after filming a costly pilot episode, HBO cancelled Bloodmoon. The network worried about making the same error as with Game of Thrones by starting a story that wasn’t fully developed.
Game Of Thrones’ Flea Bottom Spinoff Is No Longer Happening
While the Red Keep in King’s Landing was frequently featured in Game of Thrones, a planned spinoff series was intended to focus on Flea Bottom, the city’s poorest and most crime-ridden district. Known for its brothels and rough taverns, Flea Bottom was also the starting point for several important characters from the show.
We don’t know the specific plot that was planned for Flea Bottom, as the show has been canceled and no information about it has been released.
The Most Wanted & Rumored Game Of Thrones Spinoffs That Likely Won’t Happen
Several Game of Thrones spinoffs are currently in the works, expanding the show’s universe in interesting directions. However, fans still have ideas for other potential series, and one of the most popular requests since the beginning has been a show about Robert’s Rebellion.
Although House of the Dragon recounts a past war, a show about Robert’s Rebellion would face a challenge because viewers already know the fates of most of the important characters. Even the big reveals – like the love story between Lyanna and Rhaegar, and the reasons behind Jaime Lannister killing the Mad King – are already common knowledge.
It’s easy to understand why fans are eager for this prequel. The war it would depict promises thrilling action and features both beloved characters like Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon, and intriguing figures from the past, such as the Mad King and Rickard Stark. However, despite the widespread interest, there are currently no plans to actually make the show.
Many fans have hoped to see Arya Stark continue her story with a seafaring adventure “west of Westeros” after the end of Game of Thrones. Arya was a beloved character, and the idea of her exploring new lands is exciting. However, the creators don’t currently seem interested in continuing the story beyond the original series.
