Over the past ten years, Star Wars has found major success on television with big-budget Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and Andor. This move to TV series came after the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t perform well at the box office, leading Lucasfilm to change its plan of releasing a new film every year. Although intended to get the franchise back on track, the disappointing reception to The Rise of Skywalker left the future of Star Wars films uncertain. As a result, the movie side of the franchise has been marked by shifting plans and numerous delays, creating a lot of confusion about what’s coming next.
For a while, Star Wars movies seemed stuck in neutral, with several big projects falling apart, including planned trilogies from Rian Johnson and a film overseen by Kevin Feige. These failures ultimately led to a change in leadership, with Kathleen Kennedy stepping down as President of Lucasfilm in January 2026. Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan then took over as co-presidents, with Filoni also becoming Chief Creative Officer to guide the future of Star Wars storytelling. Although many are hopeful Filoni’s leadership will bring more stability, the new team is still facing a number of projects that were never officially canceled but are currently on hold.
10) The Mandalorian & Grogu

As a huge fan, I’m so excited for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie! It’s officially coming out on May 22, 2026, and it’s going to be the first Star Wars film in theaters since 2019 – a really important moment for the franchise. Jon Favreau is directing, and Pedro Pascal is, of course, returning as Din Djarin. From what I understand, the movie will take the story we’ve loved on Disney+ and give us a big, cinematic experience. What’s even more reassuring is that filming is already finished and it’s scheduled for a prime holiday release, so it feels incredibly safe to say it will happen. But more than just that, I think how well it does will really determine if we get more *Mandalorianuniverse movies in the future, and I’m really hoping it paves the way for that!
9) Star Wars: Starfighter

Right behind it in terms of confirmed release is Star Wars: Starfighter, a separate story directed by Shawn Levy. The movie is scheduled to come out on May 28, 2027, and stars Ryan Gosling – a major actor leading a Star Wars film, which is unusual. Lucasfilm has said filming wrapped up in December 2025, with shooting done in the UK and Italy to achieve a particular look. Set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker, this movie is the first big step forward in the timeline after the sequel trilogy. Because filming is finished and Levy has a strong track record, it’s almost certain to be released in theaters.
8) Dave Filoni’s New Republic Movie

Although the exact release date for Dave Filoni’s New Republic movie is unclear, it’s very likely to happen. Initially, the film was intended to be a big crossover event, bringing together characters and storylines from Disney+ shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian. Even with Filoni now having more leadership duties at Lucasfilm, the movie remains a key part of the studio’s plan to wrap up the storylines from the New Republic period. As the main creative leader for the franchise, Filoni has the power to make his vision for the film a reality. While he might push back the production to focus on other projects, the need for a concluding chapter to the *Mandoverse makes this movie a top priority for the new Lucasfilm team.
7) Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Movie

A new Star Wars film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker is still in the works, even after some changes behind the scenes. The movie, which could focus on Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order about fifteen years after the fall of the First Order, has faced scriptwriting challenges with several writers coming and going, most recently George Nolfi joining the project. Ridley has repeatedly said she’s dedicated to the film, and despite not having a confirmed release date, the movie is expected to happen because Rey is such a popular and important character.
6) Star Wars: Lando

The Lando Calrissian project, previously planned as a Disney+ series, is now being developed as a theatrical movie, and recent news has been very positive. Donald Glover will return as Lando, and he’s now also writing the script with his brother, Stephen. They reportedly finished a draft in late 2025, suggesting the movie is further along than previously thought. This is exciting because it shows Lucasfilm is revisiting characters from the earlier, standalone Star Wars films. By making it a big-screen event, Lucasfilm is hoping Glover’s popularity will draw audiences to a story that connects the classic trilogy with more modern storytelling. While the movie hasn’t been officially approved for production yet, Glover’s involvement as both star and writer provides a solid foundation that many other potential Star Wars films currently lack.
5) Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy

So, I heard late last year that Simon Kinberg was cooking up a new Star Wars trilogy, which is exciting, right? But honestly, it sounds like it’s still very early days. Apparently, Lucasfilm asked him to go back to the drawing board with his initial story ideas, and we’re not expecting to see a revised draft until later this year. It’s a huge commitment, a whole trilogy, and it seems like the studio wants to prove they can deliver solid, standalone Star Wars movies first before jumping into something that’ll take years to make. With the new team just getting settled in, they’re focusing on finishing what they’ve already started, not launching a massive, multi-year production. Unless Kinberg blows everyone away with his script this March, I get the feeling this trilogy will stay in development for a long, long time – it’s probably years away from actually happening.
4) The Hunt for Ben Solo

A fascinating development is brewing within the Star Wars fandom: the possibility of bringing The Hunt for Ben Solo to life. Originally conceived by Adam Driver and director Steven Soderbergh as a story about redeeming Ben Solo after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the project was apparently shelved by Disney CEO Bob Iger who was concerned about the character’s fate. However, the recent reveal of the project has sparked huge enthusiasm among fans. Kathleen Kennedy, the outgoing president, has called the script outstanding, essentially giving the new studio leadership the go-ahead to consider it. Now that Dave Filoni is leading the charge, the studio might be more open to taking creative chances and giving fans what they want.
3) Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

The future of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is still uncertain, making it one of the longest-running questions for fans. Announced in 2020 with Patty Jenkins directing, the movie was put on hold in 2022 so she could work on other projects. Though it seemed canceled, Jenkins revealed in March 2024 that she’d signed a new agreement with Lucasfilm to revisit the story about pilots. However, there haven’t been any official updates or a planned release date since then. Lucasfilm currently considers the project paused, meaning it’s not a top priority right now. There’s also been talk that Rogue Squadron might be developed as a TV series instead. Whether the film ultimately gets made could depend on how well other similar projects, like the recent Ryan Gosling movie, perform in theaters, helping Lucasfilm decide if there’s still an audience for Jenkins’ take on X-wing battles and heroic pilots.
2) Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie

I was so excited when Taika Waititi was announced to direct a Star Wars film! It felt like a perfect match, and I heard his script was genuinely brilliant – Kathleen Kennedy apparently loved it. But things seem to have stalled. It’s tough because Taika’s latest movies haven’t been huge hits, and the studio seems worried about taking risks with the Star Wars brand right now. With Kennedy leaving, the biggest supporter of his vision is gone, and the new team seems to prefer sticking to more classic Star Wars stories. Honestly, unless Dave Filoni thinks a comedic take would be a smart move, I’m worried that Taika’s movie will just stay stuck in development forever. It’s a real shame, because I think he could have brought something truly special to the galaxy far, far away.
1) James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi

James Mangold’s planned movie, Dawn of the Jedi, was originally intended as a large-scale story exploring the very beginnings of the Force, set 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker films. However, despite an ambitious concept and the involvement of writer Beau Willimon, the project has been put on hold. This is partly because Mangold is now committed to directing the Swamp Thing movie for the DC Universe. Additionally, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned the script was very different from typical Star Wars stories, making it a challenge to fit into the studio’s current plans. While a Star Wars film set in ancient times sounds exciting, Mangold’s busy schedule and the studio’s preference for more familiar projects have left the future of Dawn of the Jedi very uncertain.
