Before the cameras began filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the UK, there was already a flurry of speculation online about who Spidey might be facing in his fourth solo appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The most recent whispers hint that as many as eight villains could feature in Brand New Day, with many making brief appearances through a montage at the start of the film. Given that Peter Parker has already defeated Vulture, Mysterio, assisted in defeating Thanos, and battled Sandman, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus from other dimensions, it’s clear director Destin Daniel Cretton intends to ramp up the challenge for Spider-Man, and we can’t wait to see what unfolds.
Without a doubt, there are certain villains that excite us more than others due to their rich comic book history and dramatic possibilities. With the speculation about Mister Negative apparently unfounded, we’ve listed all the remaining potential adversaries for Brand New Day, arranged from least to most thrilling. Here they are:
1. Least Exciting
2. Moderately Exciting
3. Most Exciting (or Simply Thrilling)
12) Ramrod
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must admit, the announcement of Ramrod’s appearance in “Brand New Day” left me with mixed feelings. Despite his intimidating presence and superhuman abilities enhanced by steel-reinforced body, I can’t help but feel underwhelmed. Even in the comics, he remains a secondary character, with his true identity yet to be unveiled. Moreover, in today’s pop culture landscape, the concept of cyborgs seems less revolutionary compared to what we’ve seen before.
11) Boomerang
In simpler terms, Boomerang might not add much excitement to the “Brand New Day” movie since his powers are primarily a strong arm for throwing boomerangs. If the creators don’t come up with a unique portrayal of the character, we’re hoping he won’t be a main villain in the film but rather featured in a montage scene instead.
10) Chameleon
As a die-hard comic book fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the time we encountered Chameleon in the blockbuster hit, “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” You might remember him as Spidey’s first arch-nemesis in the comics, portrayed by the talented Numan Acar.
Over the years, his methods may have evolved, but one thing remains constant – Chameleon is a chameleonic figure who can slip into any disguise with ease. He’s been known to work as a hitman, spy, and criminal mastermind, making him quite the versatile villain.
Though his connection to Kraven the Hunter and powerful shape-shifting abilities make him more formidable than some other baddies on this list, the MCU has already introduced us to shape-shifting through the Scrolls, which somewhat dulls the excitement about the potential threats he might pose for Spidey.
That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing a brief cameo of Chameleon in a thrilling montage or two!
9) Savage Hulk
Ragnarok,” and after experiencing the intelligent Hulk in “Avengers: Endgame,” it feels like Marvel is offering more of the same instead of something fresh and exciting. However, it’s unclear if Hulk will be Peter Parker’s foe at all in “Brand New Day.” He might begin as an ally to Spider-Man and remain so throughout the film.
8) Venom
The compatibility of Venom (Eddie Brock) with the narrative style of the movie “Brand New Day” is questionable given his brief appearance in the post-credits scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Instead, we’d be thrilled if the symbiote or a Marvel Cinematic Universe version of it were to appear in Spidey’s world and bond with a new character, such as Mac Gargan who might be part of the upcoming film, or Peter’s friend Flash Thompson.
7) Vulture
The Vulture, one of Spider-Man’s longest-lasting adversaries, was skillfully integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe films by being portrayed as the father of Peter’s love interest. In addition, there’s a fresh twist in their relationship dynamic – whenever they cross paths again, no one seems to recognize Peter. Although it’s unlikely that Vulture will play a significant role in “Brand New Day,” his reappearance could bring a sense of depth and consistency to the Spider-Man universe. And let’s face it, Michael Keaton is an actor whose performances are always captivating.
6) The Punisher
We’re thrilled that The Punisher is among the select characters confirmed to appear in Brand New Day, and if the movie does stick to a gritty street-level style, he could make for an intriguing adversary for Peter Parker. Initially, Frank Castle may play the role of antagonist in Brand New Day, but we have a hunch that he won’t remain so for long. His shared history of trauma with Peter might lead to some emotionally powerful character development amidst the action, as both Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland are not just skilled action performers but also talented actors capable of delivering heartfelt performances.
5) Spider-Slayer
Based on recently leaked concept art, fans have been speculating that Alistair Smythe, also known as the Spider-Slayer, might be a primary antagonist in ‘Brand New Day’. Smythe’s father was a scientist who perished while constructing robots called Spider-Slayers with the intention of eliminating Spider-Man. Adopting this moniker and swearing revenge for his father’s demise, Smythe persistently tried to defeat Spiderman. However, these attempts left him paralyzed from the waist down and institutionalized. Unyielding in spirit, Smythe managed an escape and crafted a carapace that enabled him to walk once more, while also bestowing increased strength, blade-like weapons, web-shooters, and even his own Spider-Slayer robots upon himself.
We’re thrilled about the prospect of Spider-Slayer becoming a villain for two compelling reasons. Firstly, there’s something captivating about tales of family revenge. Secondly, the Smythes’ history with J. Jonah Jameson is intriguing; remember, he was the one who financed the development of the Spider-Slayer robots. In the “Brand New Day” series, this link could be further explored, potentially giving us more of the phenomenal J.K. Simmons on our screens.
4) Black Cat
One intriguing aspect that piques our curiosity about Black Cat joining Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery in Brand New Day is the unique twist: not only is she a formidable adversary for Spidey, but she also holds a significant place among his most recognized romantic interests. This incorporation of the agile, frequently superhuman cat burglar into Brand New Day creates an entirely fresh interaction for Peter to navigate, particularly if Cretton and the team plan on portraying her as a love interest. The complication lies in that Black Cat holds deep affection for Spider-Man, yet shows no interest towards Peter Parker.
3) Tombstone
It’s been frequently speculated about in the “Brand New Day” whispers, but given the storyline seems to focus on Spider-Man battling street-level criminals, the menacing figure of Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone appears to be a perfect candidate. With his distinct features like filed teeth and albinism, Tombstone certainly fits the bill for an intimidating villain. Unlike Kingpin, he’s relatively fresh on screen. Notably, Tombstone is also an adversary of both Spider-Man and Daredevil, which could potentially pave the way for the Punisher in the upcoming film. His history with characters like Scorpion and Black Cat suggests a multifaceted role within the storyline. In summary, we’re certainly intrigued by the possibility of Tombstone being part of “Brand New Day”, potentially serving as a formidable antagonist that Peter Parker must chase and defeat.
2) Scorpion
Mac Gargan, often mentioned in discussions about the rogues’ gallery of the “Brand New Day” series, is a character we hope to see in action. His tragic origin story, where he transforms into a villain after being hired by J. Jonah Jameson as a private investigator to uncover Peter Parker’s secret identity and later undergoes a scientific procedure that turns him into a scorpion-like creature, both mentally and physically, makes him an intriguing adversary for Spider-Man in the comics.
We’re thrilled about the prospect of Mac rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and this might indicate a more significant part for J. Jonah Jameson in the upcoming “Brand New Day.” There’s immense potential for a modernized take on Mac’s profession and origin story, which could lead to captivating narratives. Notably, Mac eventually hosts Venom symbiote, implying his character could have lasting impact within the MCU.
1) Tarantula
In the Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man series, there are several incarnations of Tarantula. However, it appears that the storyline “Brand New Day” might be using the original character, Anton Miguel Rodriguez, based on a plot where Spider-Man and The Punisher prevent him from hijacking a Hudson River ferry. Rodriguez was once a South American revolutionary who underwent a transformation into a giant spider-like creature to make him more of a challenge for Spider-Man in combat. Eventually, so repulsed by his monstrous form, Rodriguez begged the NYPD to end his life following another fight with Spider-Man.
It’s exciting for Spidey to encounter another spider-like villain, Tarantula, whose mutation and tragic end offer director Cretton chances to incorporate themes of body horror and sadness into the character. We find Tarantula’s storyline more intriguing than Scorpion’s, but there’s a possibility that they could join forces due to their shared status as failed experiments aiming to defeat Spider-Man.
