Quite a few actors from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, “The Odyssey,” have previously been seen in “The Walking Dead” and its related shows. This new movie adaptation of Homer’s classic Greek epic, “The Odyssey,” features Matt Damon as Odysseus and tells the story of his lengthy voyage back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. With an anticipated production cost of $250 million, “The Odyssey” is reportedly Nolan’s most expensive movie yet, allowing him to gather a number of exceptionally skilled actors, several of whom are familiar from their work on “The Walking Dead.
Matt Damon became the lead actor for “The Odyssey” following his collaborations with Nolan on “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar.” Subsequently, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and numerous others joined the cast, contributing to one of the most illustrious and thrilling ensemble casts in recent memory. It is worth noting that “The Odyssey” will also provide significant career advancements for several actors from AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” as five stars from the show are currently being considered for diverse roles within the production.
5) Corey Hawkins
Following several supporting roles, Corey Hawkins gained notability when he became part of “The Walking Dead” season 6, portraying Heath, a survivor dwelling in the Alexandria Safe Zone. Heath enigmatically vanished from “The Walking Dead” during a mission to Oceanside with Tara (Alanna Masterson) in season 7, as Hawkins moved on to work on other projects, including “Kong: Skull Island,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “24: Legacy.” In February 2025, it was announced by Deadline that Hawkins had joined the cast of “The Odyssey,” but details are still unknown about his character in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film.
4) Josh Stewart
Josh Stewart didn’t appear in the main series, but he played Chase in the four-episode web series titled “The Walking Dead: Cold Storage” from 2012. In this story set during the early days of a zombie outbreak, Chase takes shelter in a storage facility and has a confrontation with the facility’s manager, B.J., played by Daniel Roebuck. Stewart announced the news on Instagram, highlighting his past roles in Christopher Nolan’s films like “Interstellar“, “The Dark Knight Rises“, and “Tenet“. It has been revealed that Stewart will star in his fourth movie directed by Nolan, but the details about his character in the 2026 film titled “The Odyssey” have not yet been disclosed.
3) Ryan Hurst
Ryan Hurst significantly featured in seasons 9 and 10 of “The Walking Dead”, portraying the character Beta, who served as second-in-command for the Whisperers – a group of survivors who disguise themselves using Walker faces as camouflage. Interestingly, Beta also made an unacknowledged appearance in season 5 of “Fear the Walking Dead”, making Hurst one of the rare actors to appear across both series. Outside of “The Walking Dead”, Hurst is widely recognized for his roles in “Sons of Anarchy” and “Remember the Titans”. In an exciting development reported by “The Hollywood Reporter” in March 2025, Hurst is now preparing to leave his mark on “The Odyssey”, although the specifics of his role remain undisclosed.
2) Samantha Morton
In “The Odyssey,” we can expect a reunion of characters from “The Walking Dead” as both Ryan Hurst and Samantha Morton are set to appear in the film. Morton, who initially portrayed Alpha, the enigmatic and fearsome leader of the Whisperers in season 9 of “The Walking Dead,” has also been assigned this role in the spin-off series, “Tales of the Walking Dead.” Her character’s use of Walker faces as disguise was further explored in this anthology. Given Morton’s numerous awards and recognition as one of Britain’s most esteemed actors of her generation, she promises to significantly enhance the cast of “The Odyssey.
It was announced by The Hollywood Reporter that Samantha Morton has been cast in the movie ‘The Odyssey’, joining a group of actors that also includes Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and Bill Irwin. Interestingly, these actors have all worked with director Christopher Nolan previously on films such as Inception, Tenet, and Interstellar respectively. For Morton, this is her first collaboration with Nolan, but considering her significant presence in the British film industry, it might not be her only project with him.
1) Jon Bernthal
Among all actors, it seems fitting that Jon Bernthal, who played Shane Walsh in the initial seasons of “The Walking Dead,” should be considered for a role in “The Odyssey.” After his debut as Shane, Bernthal’s career soared with roles in movies like “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Sicario,” “Baby Driver,” and “Widows.” However, it is his portrayal of Frank Castle’s Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has truly made him a household name. He first embodied this character in Netflix’s “Daredevil” series and has since reprised the role in “Daredevil: Born Again.
It remains undecided which character Jon Bernthal will portray in “The Odyssey,” but he is featured alongside Tom Holland’s Telemachus and Lupita Nyong’o in the initial trailer. The movie, set to debut on July 17, 2026, also marks a reunion between Bernthal and Holland as they both appear in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31, 2026 within the MCU. In addition, Bernthal will reprise his role as the Punisher in an MCU Special Presentation scheduled for 2026, making next year a significant one for the former star of “The Walking Dead.
