The actors from Everybody Loves Raymond recently shared memories of their late co-star, Sawyer Sweeten, during a special celebrating the show’s 30th anniversary. Sweeten was known for playing Geoffrey, one of Raymond and Debra’s twin sons. Interestingly, his twin brother, Sullivan Sweeten, and sister, Madylin Sweeten, also appeared on the show, playing Michael and Ally, mirroring their real-life family dynamic.
Nineteen-year-old Sawyer died by suicide in 2015. His passing was discussed by the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond, including Sullivan and Madylin, during the show’s 30th Anniversary Reunion special on CBS.
During a discussion about their favorite moments from the nine seasons of Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Romano checked if it was okay to mention Sawyer, and Madylin gave her approval. Romano then shared that the whole cast deeply misses their former colleague, describing them as a source of positive energy on set.
We’re all still deeply saddened by Sawyer’s passing. He was such a positive and radiant person – a real light in our lives.
Sullivan acknowledged that Sawyer’s death was a shock to everyone, but he’s focusing on remembering the happy times, many of which were spent working on the show Everybody Loves Raymond.
Honestly, none of us saw that coming, but when I think back on the good times, they usually happen right here on set.
Before ending their discussion about Sawyer, the cast also talked about suicide prevention, a topic the Sweeten family deeply cares about. Madylin shared that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 18 to 25, highlighting the importance of getting help if you’re struggling.
Madylin shared that many people have told her Sawyer’s story gave them hope and helped them through difficult times, essentially saying he ‘saved’ them.
I was really touched to learn that the Sweetens sell Sawyer T-shirts, and it’s all to support suicide prevention. They’re working with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, which is just fantastic. It’s great to see them using their platform to raise awareness and help people.
When we talk about Sawyer, it’s crucial to remember how important suicide prevention is to our family. It’s the second leading cause of death for young adults between 18 and 25, but thankfully, treatment is effective for most people – around 90% recover. We often receive messages from people saying that learning about Sawyer’s story helped them and even saved their lives, which means a lot to us.
Our primary focus is supporting the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. We also create Sawyer T-shirts annually, and all the money raised from their sale is donated to the hotline.
Everybody Loves Raymond marked the start of Phil and Max Sawyer’s careers in show business. The identical twins were barely two years old when the show began, and their older sister was five. Throughout the series’ 200+ episodes, the three siblings appeared in more than half of them.
Before his career took off, Sawyer appeared in a guest role on the Disney Channel show Even Stevens, playing a character named Milton.
Later in the series, while Everybody Loves Raymond was still on air, he appeared as a younger Frank McKlusky in the movie Frank McKlusky, C.I., alongside Dave Sheridan, Randy Quaid, Dolly Parton, Kevin Pollak, Tracy Morgan, and Andy Richter.
After Everybody Loves Raymond concluded in 2005, most of the actors continued working in entertainment. However, Sawyer and Sullivan chose to leave the industry. Madylin Sweeten has appeared in films like Eagle Eye and Sam and Me, as well as TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Lucifer. She also participates in theatre and is now married with a child.
