‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Creator Reveals Why There Will “Never” Be a Reboot

While fans might wish for a revival, a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond isn’t happening. The cast recently got together to mark the show’s 30th anniversary, but creator Phil Rosenthal and star Ray Romano made it clear this was just a one-time reunion, not a sign that the show will be coming back.

According to Romano, a reboot of the show is impossible because three key cast members – considered family – are no longer available. He stated they would never attempt to revive the show without those individuals.

The popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond aired for nine seasons, from 1996 to 2005. Sadly, several cast members have passed away since the show ended. Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts, known for their hilarious roles as Raymond’s parents, Frank and Marie Barone, died in 2006 and 2016, respectively. A more recent loss was Sawyer Sweeten, who played one of Ray and Deborah’s twin sons, Geoffrey Barone. He tragically died by suicide in 2015 at the young age of 19.

“It just wouldn’t feel right,” Rosenthal explained. “We have a lot of respect for the show and its wonderful viewers, so we want to preserve its quality. Luckily, it’s still being enjoyed by people all over the world every day. And if you’re a fan, we’re still here for you.”

Earlier this year, Patricia Heaton shared her thoughts on a potential reboot, telling the New York Post that she believed it wouldn’t be right to continue the show without the actors who have passed away.

Don’t try to change something that’s already excellent. Let’s leave it as it is and allow people to appreciate it for what it originally was.

The special 30th anniversary reunion of Everybody Loves Raymond premiered on CBS on Monday, November 24th. If you didn’t get a chance to watch it live, you can now stream it on Paramount+.
