The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is now available, and while everyone is talking about the major action sequences, some subtle but important details are being overlooked. The volume culminates in the show’s largest battle yet, with Vecna unleashing an army of Demogorgons against the US military. Ultimately, Will Byers steps into his own power, becoming the ‘Sorcerer’ that has been hinted at throughout the series. This moment, which the creators, the Duffer brothers, have been developing for years, is a highlight for fans.
It’s no surprise that scenes like these are getting so much discussion. They’re massive in scope, build on characters we’ve followed for a while, and change the established rules of the Stranger Things universe. However, some of the show’s most crucial moments are actually quite small and easy to miss – they feel like quiet preparation for what’s to come. One scene in particular isn’t getting the attention it deserves, as it seems unimportant at first, but is actually very significant.
Mr. Clarke is Back in Stranger Things Season 5

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is wrapping up the series, and fans are hoping for a quick appearance from a beloved character: Scott Clarke, the Hawkins High teacher played by Randy Havens. He was a supportive figure for the kids – even making Hopper a little envious – and is now particularly close to Erica. In episode 3, she’s annoyed when Lucas and Mike interrupt her favorite class to ask him for a favor.
Honestly, seeing Mr. Clarke back in Season 5 felt a little like a fun Easter egg – a nod to when he was a bigger part of the story. But his lesson was actually really interesting! He was explaining wormholes to the kids, and Erica put it perfectly: they’re amazing because they could theoretically let you travel across huge distances, even to different dimensions, without actually crossing all that space. But here’s the catch: Mr. Clarke quickly points out that wormholes are probably impossible. He explained that the gravity needed to create one would instantly destroy it – they just couldn’t hold themselves together.
Earlier seasons of Stranger Things presented the entrances to the Upside Down as similar to wormholes. However, the show hasn’t explicitly used imagery like an hourglass to represent these gates – until now. The title of Season 5, episode 7, “The Bridge,” could change that, making a science lesson from earlier in the series surprisingly relevant. A few viewers have also pointed out another scene that adds to this new understanding.
We May Already Know What Vecna Wants the Children For

Will begins to feel like the Upside Down is concealing something from him – a terrifying structure with tall spires meant to hold the twelve missing children. He sketches what he sees, and the design strikingly resembles an hourglass – a shape often linked to wormholes. Since Vecna has already demonstrated the ability to create gateways between worlds by inflicting pain, could he be planning to use the children to actually create a wormhole?
Mr. Scott explains to his class that wormholes could theoretically allow for time travel. The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is full of references to time travel, including nods to the book A Wrinkle in Time and the movie Back to the Future. Many viewers believe this is hinting at a time travel storyline later in the season, and Mr. Clarke’s science lesson lays the groundwork for how that might be possible.
It makes perfect sense that Stranger Things has been building up Mr. Clarke’s role all along. The kids consistently turn to him for help, and his understanding of science has proven surprisingly relevant – he probably even suspects what’s really going on in Hawkins now. It would be a satisfying conclusion to have Season 5 wrap up with Mr. Clarke providing the final, crucial scientific explanation.
Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1 is streaming now on Netflix.
