Everything To Know About Marvel’s Jeff the Land Shark

Jeff the Land Shark is a surprisingly popular character in the Marvel Universe, but his story is much more connected to fan culture than the comics themselves. Originally intended as a minor, humorous character in The West Coast Avengers, Jeff became a widespread favorite and now appears alongside many different heroes – from Deadpool and Elsa Bloodstone to Emma Frost and even the main Avengers team. He’s already featured in the Marvel Rivals video game and will soon be playable in Marvel Strike Force.

Get to know Jeff the Land Shark, the cutest character in Marvel Comics! This covers everything you need to know about him.

10) Jeff the Land Shark First Appeared in 2018

Jeff the Land Shark first appeared in Marvel Comics seven years ago, in an issue of West Coast Avengers (#7, Vol. 3). In that story, the West Coast Avengers were fighting MODOK and his team, the Master of Evil West Coast. The team at the time included Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, America Chavez, Kid Omega, Gwenpool, and Fuse. By the end of the issue, Gwenpool successfully talked the West Coast Avengers into letting Jeff come home with them.

9) MODOK Created Jeff the Land Shark

In this first issue, the West Coast Avengers fought against the West Coast Masters of Evil, led by the villain MODOK and a team including Lady Bullseye, Satana, and Madame Masque. It’s important to know that MODOK originally created Jeffrey as one of several engineered beings meant to be weapons. But Jeffrey turned out to be too gentle and kind, and instead wanted to be a hero. He especially dislikes MODOK, due to the way he was treated after being created.

8) Gwenpool Was Jeff the Land Shark’s First Caretaker

Okay, so as a total comic book movie and series buff, let me tell you about Jeff the Land Shark! It all started when Gwenpool basically insisted the West Coast Avengers adopt him, even though Hawkeye warned they’d ditch him if he so much as nipped anyone. But the crazy thing is, nobody did get bitten! Everyone instantly fell in love with Jeff. And it wasn’t just Gwenpool, either – the It’s Jeff digital comic series showed Kate Bishop really bonded with him and helped take care of him, too. Eventually, Gwenpool decided Jeff needed a new home, but it was clear how much everyone adored the little guy!

7. Jeff the Land Shark Also Fought with King Deadpool

Gwenpool was aware her comic wasn’t hugely popular and worried the series getting canceled would mean a supporting character named Jeff would be forgotten. Because Gwenpool often acknowledges she’s in a comic book, this made sense. Ironically, she passed Jeff on to another character known for breaking the fourth wall – Deadpool. At the time, Deadpool was a major character, essentially a king in the Marvel Universe, and he took Jeff under his wing, looking after him even after Gwenpool asked. Jeff appeared in issues #1-10 of Deadpool Volume 7.

6) Elsa Bloodstone Once Became Jeff’s Caretaker

Okay, so Deadpool wasn’t the only one forming unexpected bonds! We also had Jeff the Land Shark, and he really clicked with Elsa Bloodstone, who was hanging out with Deadpool in the monster world. When Deadpool took Jeff under his wing, Elsa was understandably skeptical at first. But there’s this fantastic scene where she’s just sitting next to Jeff and suddenly declares she’ll protect him from anything – seriously, she became his ultimate guardian. It was honestly a little surprising, because throughout the series, Elsa seemed even more dedicated to keeping Jeff safe than Deadpool was!

5) Jeff Has All the Powers of a Tiny Land Shark

Jeff the Land Shark doesn’t have any consistent superpowers, though he’s gained them temporarily in his It’s Jeff comic series. Primarily, his abilities are those of a typical land shark – he was designed to live on land, but can still breathe underwater thanks to his gills. He has shark teeth, but is about the size of a dog. Despite this, Jeff has demonstrated powers at times. He’s very intelligent and even managed to create his own version of Pym Particles to alter his size. Once, he swallowed a magical stone from Doctor Strange, which allowed him to shoot blasts from his eyes until he threw it up. He even ate the Infinity Gauntlet once, but it only gave him a stomachache.

4) Jeff the Land Shark Loves to Play Dress Up

Jeff the Land Shark has one true passion: dressing up in costumes. He once went on a spree, borrowing items from the Avengers – including Falcon’s wings, Captain America’s shield, Doctor Strange’s amulet, Miles Morales’s mask, and Hawkeye’s arrows – and used them to create his own heroic persona. He even enjoys dressing as a dolphin, which lets him swim without frightening anyone.

3) Even Emma Frost Loves Jeff the Land Shark

Emma Frost isn’t fond of many people, and that’s well-known. Deadpool once snuck onto the mutant island of Krakoa using a shark-like creature named Jeff, which led to a confrontation with the X-Men. Emma Frost told Deadpool he wasn’t allowed to live on Krakoa without a visitor’s pass. Though she initially wanted to turn Jeff into a purse, she ended up holding and petting him while scolding Deadpool. Ultimately, she kicked Deadpool off the island, but seemed fascinated by Jeff, who clearly enjoyed all the attention.

2) Jeff’s First Love Interest Ate Him

Jeff the Land Shark experienced his first crush while appearing in a Deadpool comic. Unfortunately, it didn’t end well. He fell in love with Smash Smash, a giant monster from Monster Island. Sadly, Smash Smash started destroying Manhattan, forcing Deadpool and Elsa Bloodstone to stop her – otherwise, the government threatened all the monsters on the island. Before that happened, though, Smash Smash showed her affection by… eating Jeff! That was a step too far, and Deadpool killed the monster to save him (and the city). Thankfully, Jeff was able to escape by eating his way out of Smash Smash.

1) Jeff the Land Shark Even Bonded with a Symbiote

Jeff the Land Shark unexpectedly bonded with a piece of the Venom IV symbiote, which originally belonged to a dragon brought to Earth by Knull. It happened when Jeff bit the dragon, and even though Deadpool removed it once, the symbiote didn’t disappear – it just hid in Jeff’s closet. It reattached to Jeff, but was less aggressive without Knull’s influence, though it did make Jeff harder to control. Kate Bishop eventually managed to separate them at a concert. The symbiote bonded with Jeff one last time, helping him battle Zombiotes, after which Jeff simply put it away with his clothes.
